welcome to the forums! i made a post about basic village life for new players

https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=2633

but tbh farming isnt all that a village needs. if u see someone going to get rabbits out in the wilds its a good idea to ask if they can teach u to be a hunter. itll take u away from the village so theyll have less mouths to feed and u get to learn a trade thats more interesting than farming. ur also a lot more likely to survive outside of ur village (less murderers, less rapid famines, more knowledge of surrounding foods). just make sure u have a solid idea on how to keep from starving. theres nothing worse than teaching 3 ppl how to do something n then watching them all starve.

always try to keep ur temp in the middle n always have food on hand or in basket. u can dig up carrots n such to get food in a pinch and try to keep a combo running. u get a food combo from eating different foods and it makes ur hunger last longer (so lets say u eat a carrot and then a berry, that makes ur combo x1. then u ate a carrot, a berry, and a berry in bowl, thats combo x2. but then u eat a carrot, berry, and another carrot. that gets rid of ur combo n u have to start again). these little tips will keep you alive longer so u can help out ur family.

anything else is like what other ppl said, u gotta ask ppl "how do i forge?" "how do i make cart?" "can you teach me?" almost always the answer will be yes unless the person is in middle of smithing or other time-sensitive things. ive taught a lot of new players as often as i can but u gotta understand that teaching is a time and food consuming effort. try ur best to learn from what the person's doing instead of just expecting them to explain with words. and try out what u learned for urself later in life!

also, always keep onetech open whenever u play so u can make things if there arent ppl around to teach

and if u ever end up the last of a lineage or ur alone with only male relatives, try making shit! thats the absolute best time to try smithing/baking/ whatever u dont kno abt

a girl born to the village, blonde hair, fair skin, and voice as deep and dark as the devil's. soon she would be called "witney the cursed."

at her birth the villagers gathered, screaming in fear, "shes evil!" they shouted, "shes a murderer" they called

witney the cursed stood stoic, as her mother defended her

"i hope she's not evil," her mother lamented, as witney with her evil, dark voice loomed across the town

a man by jack knew of her demonic power the moment she opened her mouth and spoke words that drew the listener in like a black hole

he gave her an apron, in hopes of appeasing the demon, a sacrifice to keep her at bay

but she came to him again! with a shirt in hand, "i dont like nudity" she commanded

the man, overcome with fear tossed her his hat, screaming, "i do not take from demons, only sacrifice!" and she left him in peace

soon a blade lay within the pouch of her apron. had they not known the true nature of her demonic soul they would have mistaken her for any doctor's apprentice

but an unnamed man in the town called for an arrow, demanding she be put down, "shes a murderer" he called out to the townsfolk, hoping to sway their unaffected hearts

the milkweed was soon gathered, and an arrow was formed. the man lunged at the first blonde, blue-eyed girl he lay eyes on. the bow was drawn! and the arrow pierced her heart

"why?" she cried, in a girl's shrill. the nameless man had slain the wrong girl. the medics tried to save her life, but alas, they had no knife to stop the blood. she died on the farm she was born in

but the nameless man was not done, "dont kill the demon!" jack cried, for he knew to kill a demon would only anger it further. it would come seeking vengeance!

but the nameless man did not heed his words, and the arrow struck true. she lay bleeding, and again, in a flurry the medics tried to save her, but they were too late, too unprepared for the violence that consumed the nameless man

and her fury manifested, swarmed into the form of a menacing bear. it clawed its way into the farm, devouring all in its path. the medics managed to save the hunter from its wrath and it was led away from the farm, but alas, even two arrows did not slow the demon's servant

seeing the chaos, jack ran into the hospital, scooping up witney's evil bones. a purifying ritual had to be done to appease the demon's fury! he took the bones to his sister, to tell her of the plan, then went to face the bear

a sacrifice had to be given. a life for a life.

may evil, the likes of witney, never scorch this earth again

the idea of kings seem to come naturally to a lot of people. whenever we get the crown there are always claims of kinghood. basically what im trying to propose here is what if we turn the title of "king" into a role that distributes food through the idea of taxation? i think it could be cool, especially in big towns. i just dont know if it would work and i rarely get lucky enough to be ruler. if any of u guys get a chance u should try it out

we've had kings, we've had guards. humor me here and think about taxes.

rulers take a certain % of crops from the farmers and distributes them to the guards and other industries that support the kingdom. the king makes sure there is a proper facilitation of resources by ensuring that a certain amount of food goes into reserves. the king can also store some amount of excess in holds for trade.

around yesterday i was born into a town with a neighbor to the north west. my grandmother would threaten them with a knife to make sure they would give her the stuff they wanted. what if she had proclaimed herself queen and taken the stuff from the citizens as a tax?

how would taxes be upheld in a way that ensures the citizens wouldn't rebel?

would it be two bowls of berries, two baskets of carrots, and a basket of corn? is that too much? is that too little?

i dont really know, what do you think about taxes? will we ever get to the point where rulers will start taxing others through threats or bribes? how quickly would a ruler who taxes citizens be killed off? do any of u guys wanna try taxing and let us know how it went?

I actually had two different family lines die out today due to NOT expanding the berry farm. I don't know if it was based on them being new (large carrot farm in gen six with four berry bushes.) Or just people trying to get away from being berry people. Berry farms are crucial in the early generations to supporting a growing population but if used the entire time instead of a crutch to real food (Stew, Pie, Burrito.) you just kill everyone with the amount of sustaining the field requires.

The problem lies in the fact that hoes are awful presteel. I stopped even using stone hoes because they're much more effort and I just seem to have terrible ass luck with them.

Never EVER grow carrots before sheep. They give the same or less (depending if you alternate between berry then bowl of gooseberry) per tilled row. The hoe maintenance is not worth faster food time and the general abundance of soil/water. Once you have enough berry bushes transition farming to stew/burritos. Excess straw at early game can be made to use extra baskets if you aren't at the point of composting. Hell you can have sheep in early generations without a sheep pen people. Free range sheep aren't the worst thing in the world, just drag it north/west/east/south of town and remember the general area you set the domestic mouflon.

The biggest mistake people make is just eating berries their whole lives. I cannot tell you how many times I've set pies/kraut/stew next to a berry farm with bowls and told people to eat from the crock and just watched people eat the berries.

the problem is that the civ i was born into had 0 idea how to continue on from the berry farm. it was MASSIVE and we had no other food source! someone was trying to make pies but we didnt even have an oven! nobody was working on the pen because they didnt know how to start. the yum factor and other food stuff is a lot more advanced thinking than most the ppl in my civ were doing. they only knew how to berry and that was IT and all the smart ppl were dwindling from old age or were living away from camp till things calmed down so the civ was basically stuck in a loop of starving and rebounding

we didnt even have someone bringing rabbits or iron to make tools. and when we did finally calm down the new players started planting more berries even though we were basically out of water!

i get the balance between berries n the rest but we couldnt even begin to start other projects because the massive berry farm was using up all our man power and resources. there was no transition to refined food happening because we were in a constant water shortage because of the big ass farm.

also u need to plant at least one row of carrots in order to even get sheep, but we didnt even have a single row of carrots. only squash!

basically, i have no idea what was going on with that camp. this was the only instance where ive suicided from too many new ppl. or maybe they were all griefers. who knows the difference

the cause of this was ppl constantly expanding the goddamn berry farm when we were in gen 6 with NO SHOVEL AND NO SHEEP NO WHEAT OR CARROT FARM AHHHHHHHHHH

this is going to be basic town life tutorial for all the noobs. if u want any in-depth stuff go check out some smart persons tutorial

ok. u need to understand that basic town life and functionality is based on DIRT MANAGEMENT. if theres no dirt or water, you die. you will run out of food and just die!

dont expand the berry farm to the point it needs 5 people constantly maintaining watering and dirting to keep it functional. thats just a waste of resources. you want to be putting most of that berry power into MAKING DIRT

you make dirt by threshing a wheat. threshing a wheat is done by cutting a ripe wheat plant, and then hitting it with a branch, a maple or poplar ones will do. it has to be NOT STRIPPED OF BRANCHES. if you see a branch by the wheat station dont fucking touch it! its the threshing branch!

https://onetech.info/226-Threshed-Wheat

you then take the straw and place it on the ground

next step is to get a bowl and fill it with berries. you pick a berry from a bush and click it onto the bowl. when u cant put any more in its full! then put a carrot in there and use a sharp stone to mash them together

then take that bowl of carrot and berry and click it onto the straw. thats dry compost. get some water and click that onto the dry compost. now its wet!

take a shovel, click onto a sheep poop and click that onto the wet compost. now its composting. this will turn into DIRT

there are other important steps to making dirt, its to get sheep and carrots and wheat going. without that you cant get dirt! without compost you will run out of wild dirt and die!

to get WHEAT you click on a wild wheat to get wheat seeds. you click that on a tilled row and water it. it will grow now! do the same with a carrot! youve planted wheat and carrots!

now itll get a lil complicated. we are going to get SHEEP.

to get sheep you need a rope and a bow. ok?

before you do anything get a bowl of berries and a carrot in it, like we did for composting. hide it behind a tree so nobody takes it and makes a fucking pie out of it.

ull need to make a pen before doing this, u can just dig a hole instead of making an actual fence n stuff. dont use graves cos someones not gonna like it n get rid of it. just use the shovel and dig in this pattern

EDIT: https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewt … 583#p23583 this is a more up to date pattern use this one

https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=729

to dig a hole you need a stake and a round rock. u put the stake on the ground where u want it and CLICK it with the rock. you hit it enough until its called "PIT STAKES"

https://onetech.info/622-Pit-Stakes <- itll look like this

then u take the shovel and click on the stake. you've made a hole now. do it again till uve made a pen

https://www.onehouronelife.com/forums/v … php?id=578 heres another forum post on sheep

now u need to kill a mouflon with a lamb. if ur not too sure about how to shoot its RIGHT CLICK on it. you have to click on a sheep with a baby

https://onetech.info/532-Mouflon-with-Lamb <- itll look like this

then you use the rope and click on the lamb with the rope and drag it back into the pen. then feed the carrot and berry mixture to it n itll grow up. itll become a mouflon but itll have a sheep lamb. u feed that and BOOM. uve got sheep

sheep only shit when they grow up. so u gotta feed a baby to get poop ok?

IF U THINK U CANT DO THIS HERES HOW U CAN HELP:

1. STOP EATING ALL THE CARROTS
2. STOP FILLING ALL THE BOWLS
3. STOP USING UP THE ENTIRE SHOVEL TO BURY THE ENTIRE FAMILY
4. STOP USING ALL THE DIRT ON ONLY BERRIES

if u do those above i (and probably others) WILL take you as a griefer. prevent being killed for not knowing by following the above rules

heres a random example of what a decent/smallish compost section should look like

fPezZFg.png

SO WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF UR IN A GEN 6 CAMP WITH A MASSIVE BERRY FARM AND NOTHING ELSE???

1. DO NOT EXPAND THE BERRY FARM
2. MAKE THE CARROT/ WHEAT FARM

new? any more questions? i will do literally everything in my power to help you understand what to do next. please, i will make another shitty diagram if you need it

the thing is that ive noticed a lot more helpful players are born as boys. i always keep one boy and one girl for eve camps cos 99% of the time my girls r dumb af. the boys tend to progress our society a lot faster than the girls, especially when they start popping out kids. i only keep the smart ones tho, the dumb ones idc if its a girl or a boy i send it off to die all the same. being eve is hard enough without extra food being gone

Hi Mom. I was Helen, your firstborn child to whom you told many tales.

I wanted to ask Athens for his hand in marriage, and to prove my love to him I lead him to a refuge where he could be safe from Jax. Little did I know, Jax had followed us there and tried to stab Athens. But he starved before he could put the knife down, knowing doing so would be a death wish.

A bunch of kiddos ran to collect Jax’s loot as I proclaimed he was dead. I took a loincloth from his corpse as a statement that I had been the one who essentially killed him. If he’d had stayed in town, if I hadn’t lead him away, Jax would have continued to hunt my love.

But Athens wasn’t pleased with me. He didn’t give me any credit and I decided to give him the knife instead of keeping it. Sorry to burst your bubble, but Athens became corrupt when the knife was in his possession, threatening to stab me if I didn’t give him my clothes. (Well, he hinted at it more indirectly — standing with his knife in hand, free from his bag, while he told me he needed my clothes.) I was forced to flee with my child. And he didn’t, as far as I know, hunt any of the children who had looted more of his valuables, like his bag and other clothes. (Which I ended up giving the king later before I died...)

By the time I arrived, you had already passed, dear mother. And soon I did too, for I was forced to press ESC and then % due to real life matters. I loved listening to your tales. And although I wasn’t the cause of war, I sure did contribute to it — just as you prophesied.

Thank you for your beautiful story.

Helen

then it was wise of asha to hide the knife. he only managed to slay one innocent. dear sunny... i recall him crying, saying "scary" as jax and athens quarreled. its unfortunate that this argument cost him his life.

and you, my eldest. im sorry to have cursed you to seek what you could not possess. i wanted a better life for you, with someone to love. if you are born to me again i hope to give you a blessed name and to tell you of peace and love, rather than war and heartbreak. maybe next time i will find you a kinder husband

also, lotus it seems that you and i end up getting born in the same family quite a bit! and have many adventures together. first as waylon, then as mary, and now as helen. i wonder what interesting life we will be born together next!

i was born amy to a small village with a bear. it nearly claimed the life of one of my cousins and it was terribly frightening. but soon the bear was slain and the town returned to a life of mundane peace.

as i grew along with my crops i wondered, is this all that will become of me? was i born amy to do nothing but fertilize some plants and water them in a constant cycle? trapped in a cruel game of survival against nature and the devious mind of other humans?

as the queen paraded her young son in her arms i grew determined not to end this life like others. i would change a child's life.

so when i grew of age i took it upon myself to save all the children to came into my arms. i cooed over my oldest daughter, Helen, naming her after the famous beauty whose looks caused the destruction of Troy. i told her of the story of Troy and how a single golden apple cost so many lives. she asked "y mom?" with no answer to provide her i merely said "use your beauty wisely and live gloriously"

after she was grown the aged queen found a young boy. a second cousin of sorts. i asked him where his mom was and the queen told me she found him. a sad fate it was, to be abandoned. but he cried, "no." i saw his iron will and told him he is chosen to lead us. but he only cried "name" "name" "name".

i am not your mother! i shouted at the boy. but he did not cease his wails. "name". "name" he called

i took him north to look for his mother, where he said she ran.

i took pity on the boy and named him Athens. told him he can be the master of his own fate, even if he was abandoned by his mother.

By then the queen's young son had grown. His name was Jax and he was filled with fiery spirit, as wild as the wolf hat upon his young head. His first wish was to be the next king, to follow after his mother's steps. but she denied him, saying "only women can inherit the crown. it is tradition". but he wished to change his mother's mind. we wished him luck.

Despite our searching, we could not find Athens' mother until he was too grown to be named. he cried at his mother, saying "mum!" "mother!" "you abandoned me" but she ran off. i saw darkness growing in his eyes. he cried for revenge. despite my pleas that he could be kind, good, and wise, he chose to embrace evil. he had decided to be evil the moment his mother abandoned him.

while he plotted his mother's demise i found my young brother, also abandoned. i lamented my fate, to rescue children who were doomed to be discontent with the world. he went off and Athens came to me, confiding in me his plans to grow an empire and to overthrow the queen. he wished to name the empire the "motherless ones". and he asked for my support. but i remained silent. i had just birthed my second, another girl that i named cassandra.

jax reappeared now, a full grown man with a beard. he declared to his mother that he wished to be hunter, to provide for his family. the queen and I endorsed his dream and he went off happily.

i too, took my daughter into the woods. i held her in my arms and told her, "young one, you will have a life of chaos. the boy i rescued wishes mayhem. you can choose your part in this play. whether you support him or fight him is up to you. you are the only master of your destiny."

as my smallest, asha, was born i witnessed my mother stab my young brother. still a tiny thing. she claimed he was a griefer, that he was upset with his fate and hid pies from the family. despite that i wept for his loss of life.

athens came to me then, "my adopted mother," he said, "the queen tried to kill me. we must overthrow her."

"support me", he pleaded, "i will create a parliament. vote king Athens" he cried. Jax, moved by his speech, and reminded of his own childhood wish to rule, supported him.

but he hesitated to follow Athens' plan. "we cant kill her. it will be illegitimate rule. she is still my mother," he pleaded.

The two stood beside one another at the forge, discussing plans over my brother's bones.

My last would be born at this time, another daughter i named Hera.

Helen came to me with a child in hand and i gasped, "helen you grew into your name. so beautiful"

"but i still haven't captured a man's heart" she said.

as i typed the words, "you could marry athens" the boy and Jax came to us.

"Amy, the plan is cancelled," Athens said. "because the queen... is DEAD" he laughed

Jax screamed in rage. pulling out his knife and ensuing chase. "my nephew killed my mother!" he cried and rushed after Athens, who pranced away gleefully.

Athens later came to me after losing Jax. "i am king," he said.

"what will you do?" i asked

"uncle wants to kill me. Amy, help me!" he cried. i remained unmoved and he said, "listen, i didnt kill the queen." his pleas reminded me of the lost babe i found, holding onto the queen for dear life.

"i know that Athens." i sighed, and reached out to Jax, who had run back into the farm.

"Jax. Athens did not kill your mother" he stopped. and paused

"he had no knife. no bow. he is a liar but he is not evil" i pleaded. "remember your words to your mother. to become a hunter for this family and to provide food for our family. is this how she would have wanted you to be known? as the killer of your own kin?"

then he put away his knife. and the two men, now both grown with full beards stood face to face.

Jax shook his head. "you shame me" he snarled "i will not call you nephew anymore"

the two stood in the square where the bear and my only sibling was slain. a gap between the two. a rift created by lies and mistrust.

"i was born evil like my mother," athens explained

"my dearest athens, you always had a choice"

"amy have i failed you?"

"no."

he sighed, and looked back at his uncle. "im sorry uncle, i have wronged you and this town."

"i accept." jax replied, "on the condition you may be gone from my face of anger"

"am i banished?!" athens cried.

as jax stormed off athens turned to me. "uncle has banished me. there is only one solution"

"repentance" i offered

but the boy, he sneered. "kill uncle jax." right as jax walked back. the two stormed off in another chase. and i was left alone in the farm. asha comforted me, saying "i cannot change the chaos, but i can bury the bodies."

"you can retell their stories" and she agreed. i gave her my bag and my shoes. the last of my clothes. as my withering bones settled, ready to be put in a grave, i watched her with her small daughter and Athens returned with Jax's knife.

"Amy, jax is dead. i am now king!" he cried.

he finished his mission, and he was now king. he put down the knife for a moment to grab food and asha snatched it, squirreling it away in the bag i gave her moments before.

jax stormed back, screaming "where is it! where is it aunt amy!!"

"i do not wish to see more death" asha pleaded. a pacifist in my own blood. i remained silent as athens cried, "i am king! i am your king! i command you all to build me a palace!"

but my little granddaughter challenged him, "i am queen" she laughed, much as Athens once did. all in the center of town.
