In this two lifetimes I faced a lot of new players. It was pretty hard to teach them while trying to dont let everything collapse.
As a new player, this is my biggest frustration. The 'elders' are grinding so hard to keep things afloat that they have no time to teach the new people. So, newbies wander around, use up resources, and are generally useless, or worse, actively fucking things up.
The grinding in this game is a bit too much, IMO. There needs to be some moments of 'phew... ok, so we're not imminently going to die, so let me teach you this new skill' and/or 'let me learn/master a skill myself'.
Instead, your time is consumed with "MUST MAKE CARROTS, MUST FIND BERRIES, MUST NOT DIE", and you don't get to enjoy the social side of the game.
Some people suggest that you should read manuals/google it beforehand before playing, but a game shouldn't require a manual to gain entry. Good games are not overly hard for new players to access - they are challenging, but not near impossible. I think if/when this game gets picked up by Steam or whatever, and an influx of players come in, there will retention issues because the game is just not easy to get into at the beginning. The most effective way to combat this, without overly simplifying the game, is to have this part of the social role of the game where elders must teach new players. But if they are too desperate trying to survive themselves, this wont/doesn't happen.
I don't know what the best fix is for this. Maybe have food needs slowed down? Maybe have longer decay periods? I'm not sure... but players should be able to enjoy the social game for a few minutes now and again without potentially sacrificing the entire village.
Completely agree with you. I wish I had more time, so I could teach someone something. I did teach a few people how to make pies and such, but honestly the majority of learning in my games happen when the village is so far advanced that there isn't really anything else to do, or when the village is doomed.
Some of the most genuine learning moments happened when there weren't any women in town and we were just waiting to die out, which I think shows a problem in the game's pacing.
Just had a game today where I spawned as Eve, and between finding a good spot, keeping myself alive and trying to climb up the tech tree, there's literally no time for teaching. Heck, I couldn't even keep my kids alive. Couldn't teach them where to find food, or how to help me start up the farm ar anything really... Died old and alone...
Haha, yeah thats true. I made the same experience. Once we were two man and a boy. The boys mother died and we were doomed, we had some good food backup for us three, so we talked and I teached them how to smith.
But at the moment its really hard to teach in the earlie game. If you are lucky you get some experienced babys and you build up a good city and then you can start teaching or your are unlucky and you get unexpirienced babys and you are doomed running around to try that they dont starve or run out of soil.
I had now several runs as an eve almost all the times the lineage died at the third gen, even in spots were starving was not possible. This time was the first time the generation went so far but almost died again if I was not running there like a retard knowing the place.
Just saw this in the lineage history:
http://lineage.onehouronelife.com/serve … l_id=29600
I was an eve and called myself Vandenberge. I spawned right into a great spot. Lots of ponds, lots of rabbits, snow and desert biom. Just the greenland was a bit short.
I struggled to keep my kids alive. The problem was that a lot of them were new players. I tried to teach them the best I could but they starved all in front of food. The first boys I needed to abadone so i could get my first girl grown. I thought the lineage was doomed again, but two of my girls did it and grew a bit older.
At this life I managed to set the carrot farm up, the smith almost ready to start smithing and a good row of berry bushes.
I was a bit worried, but the place was pretty good and the setup was good to go longer in the lineage.
Just one life later I was spawned again in the Vandenberge lineage. First I was happy, but I saw that not much moved forward and the population was pretty high. A lot of the people just stayed there and did nothing only a few did a really great job.
Because of the overpopulation, people just picked carrots and some protected them with their life to grow seeds. I was just starting to smith when I saw the crisis coming. But no one cared and all the carrots got picked. In the same time I rushed trough the deserts and picked the sweet and yellow cactus fruits. After I got them all I ran into the desert and got seeds.
Until the seeds were grown a lot of the people died and only a few survived. I picked some soil and made north to the carrot farm a plot for seeding only. After I finished the small seeding plot I showed my lovely daughter the massive water reservoir in the west and died there saying bye to her.
The crisis was over, and live was going better again. I hope this time they will make it.
In this two lifetimes I faced a lot of new players. It was pretty hard to teach them while trying to dont let everything collapse.
Just for all players, when food is low, get out, run in the desert grab some cactus fruits bring it back to the farm, go in the savanna and get some carrots and seeds for your loved ones.
Dont just stare the carrots until they grow. When you see someone shouting "This row for seeds" its already to late when there is no hugh backup on food. If food seems low and someone protects the carrots for seeds you should hear the call and grab some food in the wild. Better start to collect it from far away of the city and move then closer to the city. A lot of people walk ten seconds out of the city and look for food. If you pick the close food those players are most likly doomed while they watch the carrots grow.
Final words: "Harvest?" -way too funny LOL
Final words: "F" never use the f word, seems it gets you killed
i gonna deliberately say things now as last words: "not a snake just a rock". "running across this desert is safe" "no bear was in this town for years" "put that knife down"
I am in :DDDD
Hi, I was Burak, the only daughter of Hope! I was also the old lady that got mad at you guys for killing Tamara haha. It was a pretty good life.
Sadly it seems the lineage died out 6 or 7 generations after me...
Sad to hear. Looked like a long lineage.
Maybe check in the gamefolder the folder settings.
Look for a file named "useCustomServer.ini". Open it with notepad check if there is a 0 or 1.
If there is a 1 change it to 0, save the file and try to login again.
First time the game will update, second time the game will start.
If its not working write please and we see if we find a other solution.

When I hit 40 years a young and good looking girl came to me and asked me if I want to merry her.
We married in a stunning ceremony - it was something like "Do you want to merry me" "Yes, are we now married" "yes" and she got pregnant then. We laught and had a bit creepy relationship sometimes, but till the end we were in love. Our first girl was borne and we named her tamara, she was a bit crazy and creepy. She ran around and said weird stuff like I will kill your babies and she praised to Satan. My wife was afraid of our little monster, so I took it in my hand and killed tamara before she killed us.
After her we got a few more babys - nicer babys.
Bob, tamara the second and unfrotunatly the rest of the names i forgot. I died at 59 saying "Guve Carrot" to bob, because there was no food around and our youngest son and me almost starved. Unfortunatly I starved, anyways I just had one more year, but I hope the other boy did it!
Haha I was Tamara The First. Sorry for scaring you guys!
There was one old lady. After I stabbed you she said that she didnt liked your death and we should have accepted you. Just because you are different we shouldnt kill you. I guess she was right..
ty Joriom!
I wonder would it be possible to make the view scrollable with the mousweel?
After the update my client went back to normal view. Any fix soon?

I just played in this familyline and when I checked it seemed that it goes pretty long. Does any one got more information? Who founded the family? And when? What happend? Any storys to tell?
I had a good mix, but mostly eve or kid of eve spawn.
Unfortunatly 5/6 times when I was an eve all my kids died or I just had boys left....
Even in great lands full of food they managed to starve or ran away... I tried several playstyles as eve. Get the carrot farm running fast or make small things and mostly haul berrys etc to the settlement.
In the first case my kids just starved. The second case I supported three kids with hauling food to the camp, but in my whole lifetime THREE players didnt managed to build up a farm etc. Idk if they just stood there and ate the berrys lol.
Just once I had a experienced kid that worked together with me and we could build up a really good start settlement.
Alone I can set up as an eve a big carrot farm, small berry farm or milkweed farm, adobe kiln with everything to start smithing + coal etc. , 9 Bowls and 3 plates, rais 4-6 kiddos. And some small other stuff.
But my kids or my other eve mums dont even come close that.....
I was your last child before your hair grayed and your fertility vanished. You and me were the only survivers of a great and rich town. You told me that all your female kids died and unfortunatly the town had no belltower. We couldnt ring for eves to come. So we decided to go on long journey to find a women.
We headded north and traveled far. On the way we came across nice lands, two monolithes that were very close together we stopped at the monolithes and I prayed to jason.
You got older and older, but we still keept walking, untill your end came near.
We were not finish talking, but suddenly you died on old age or starvation. I promised you to build a shrine in your favorite biom.
Your stuff, the cart and the food will help you in your next life. The snakes will protect you and the desert will keep you warm. I headed even further north and I am still on the hunt for a new female for our town.
There was a second leak of a frog:
YOU FORGOT THE HOLY CACTUS GOD IN YOUR POLL!!!!
Big towns are always doomed because of things like this.
There are four things that happen constantly.
1. No one cares about the food
2. People accusing someone for something and then a slaughter happens.
3. A queen/king is in town, others want to be queen/king and then a slaughter happens.
4. Griefer comes. And a slaughter happens.
And in all cases it leads to a food collapse.
I played the last days in semi big towns and always one of those things happend.
Allot of times I farmed. Got more seeds for the farm, went smithing while crops were growing because tools run out.
But I couldnt stop the collapse several times, I asked alot of people to help, but most were busy doing own stuff or hunting someone down.
I figured out that we need a new town layout.
I think the future town should be a big farm sourrounded by boxes and wells and with a locked door.
One women should keep outside of the farm a female child. And one women should mass produce children in the farm. Only grown male farmers should be let free to work on the town. And if someone outside carrys a weopon expect the one women ouside of the farm need to get killed asap.
Maybe this will help lol
Before the decay update I started to build outposts/seedbanks in and near towns since we all spawned over and over again in the same area it was sometimes even harder to get seeds when you lived in a good running town.
I had different concepts:
Decentralised outpost:
They were mostly far away from the city, but still close enough to reach the city. City and Outpost were connected with a road, lot of people traveled there and saw the outpost.Everyone I saw, I told the purpose and whats the plan.
I even told my kids to live at the outpost and keep it in a good shape.
Later I came back and some eve lived her live there. She had no clue about the place and all seeds were gone.
fence/adobe wall with door
In the city right next to the farm I build a room and told everyone it is for seeds.
After a while when good times ended and mismanagement started. The seeds of the field run out and the seed room was used. But when food was back at normal level no one cared about the seed room and so it stayed empty.
I think seeds started to decay or I wanted to make it harder to pick the seeds.
I just planted the soil + seeds without watering them.
From each plant two rows. So you could water one row and still have a backup seed.
When I tried this one women started to farm in the room like it was a farm that lacks of water. Next to here was a gigantic carrot farm not in a room?!?
So then I went ham. I build a big room out of adobe. No door no nothing only seeds inside. You had to hit down the wall with two people to get into the Seedbank.
I thought this will be a good idea since you need two people and its hard so no new players can open it.
After maybe two hours I came back. A part of the wall was deconstructed and someone planted 20 wheat plants in it and later it became to a storage room for clothes.
After that moment I stopped to build a seed vault.....
Now with signs it could work out again.
I am playing on a ultrawide monitor too.
I need to run the game in windowed mode. I like to run it fullscreen too.
I set up the vm today and see tomorrow what I can do.
When I read the thread yesterday. I also thought that the combination of randomnes and different sprites is the best solution. No need to change the whole engine, no big mess, no tracking, just modify what already existed, fast implementation.
Then again I just wonder for more advanced objects what is the absolute limit of minimum uses you could implement before it gets a mess again?
A better tool or a car for example that breaks after 4 uses would be insane ![]()
But you could go around this problem if you make reperations easier. I think thats what gus also wrote yesterday?
I just wonder what your thoughts are about this?
sounds good. Did you post it on reddit?
I found yesterday the perfect spot. Around 30 Berry bushes. Around 15-20 Ponds very close and more 10-20 seconds walk. Lot of seeds and rabbits pretty close by. Only thing that I didnt saw in masses were soil and milkweed. Still enough soil to start a carrot and milkweed farm.
I started to build everything needed up. I grew older. Planted milkweed and carrots. Got rabbits, made clothes, ... I just waited for a baby to get born. I didnt even cared when I got older if it is a boy or a girl. Atleast one baby. But then my hair went gray and at that point I knew my familyline was fcked ![]()
in most settlements starving is the biggest problem. Untill you come over the boarder that you wont starve anymore you can start teaching. But atm not many settlements accomplish this. And when they do they wont last long.
On Server 3 was a village that survived several hours. I was on at maybe 3/4pm and later at 8 pm I got born there again. At the last run there was a griefer. We stopped it, but it was harder after the griefer was there. But still there were many people alive and I can imagine that they made it!

Oh do you invest in many companies in last years? Do you always search for some good quality stuff? DO you really think Jason hates the community that has formed around a game he is spilling his life into? Do you know how much $20 is? Working a federally mandated minimum wage in the United States would require that you work 2.75 hours at $7.25
Did you play more than 2.75 hours? Let the guy develop without blasting him for making changes you don't like, $20 is almost nothing to a working adult who has "taken many investments in companys the last years".
Damn, I see now you're in Germany. In this case $20 is 16.28 euros and at 8.84 as the minimum wage (source: https://wageindicator.org/main/salary/m … e/germany) you would only need to work 1.84 hours so your entitled german ass has no reason to complain.
your entitled white ass has no reason to complain...........
LOL. Whats wrong with you dude? You can sure tell her that 20 Euro/Dollar is not much. But why do you genaralize all germans?
nice work!
I liked the game, because the things you craftet/did had a impact - forever. We build the wall at trumptown for example. I was born there later again and it was still there. It was nice to see, to think about the building process with all that people, to see the impact in the world.
Someone started to build doors and I continoued his work.
Every city was special and always a little bit growing and changing. Sure there was no so much new tech added to craft allday new things. But there was still plenty of more stuff to do, maybe add some roads, add some houses. Hunt bears to get some nice floor, make some red/Blue clothes like someone suggested on the forum, .... There was still so much to do. It was already slow to advance because of the murdering and griefing problem. Still you could accomplish a few things. And still there was more to do.
In a good enviroment there could also happen roleplay. There was this story about a mother, going to another town to trade something. She got killed in that town. Her children then went on war with the other city.
Just because the tech tree ended, didnt the game end for me.
Now the game ended for me, because this just takes all the sence out of the game.
Why should I even bother to build/craft something? Even when the apocalypse would happen less frequently. Like 1 day, 1 week. For me that would be still to fast. Maybe every half year...
I will stop playing and see what happens.
And please continou with the speed runs!
