Dodge vs spoon is the rivalry of the ages.

@adamwest, totally get the new player vibe. Its a lot of fun learning at the start and repeating stuff and getting better at it feels good. But once you get a few hundred hours and start trying to carry it gets really frustrating. You do the same stuff over and over in the hopes of it making a difference just to have it go down the drain in a day or two. Once you hit the thousands it just feels monotonous. So probably my point of view is a bit skewed for that reason. Glad you're enjoying the game and hope you stick arounnd.

Also i don't think anyone would call it racist if we all spawned as robots or aliens. But it would still be a clunky and annoying system.

What it's like when they can't feed a child.  What it's like when they food bar starts to decline.  A little bit about how their village changes over time.  What they might complete in a single life.  More about the food types that they can eat, and perhaps a better understanding of the yum and/or craving systems.

Yea fair point. Especially with the recent pop flux i doubt most new players even had time to eat with all the babies piling on.

Lets be real, living past 40 is selfish unless you are doing serious work. Otherwise you are just wasting food for the next generation.

Meant four as in four families total of each singular race. Obviously there are more than that sometimes but usually the family they are replacing are on the way out with the generational food mechanic.

If the amount of families adjusted with player population i doubt there would have been as many problems with the player influx.

The game has also been balanced for a small population. So when we have a large influx everything goes haywire. The population often drops off quickly though. Either due to the palatability of the game or the game being unbalanced for population growth. Maybe a mixture of the two.

#281 Re: Main Forum » Where roleplaying has gone in OHOL? :( » 2020-10-01 00:28:14

Good role players? Lol

The game is too fast paced and the demand for work is too high for anyone to have time to roleplay. Even if you tried there would be a small battalion of people to yell at you about it. Before the kill mechanic change people would just kill you over it.

Roleplay can be fun but at its core its just a distraction, one most people can't afford.

Issue with no homeland + race restrictions was every fam just lived in the same town. So every life was in that town over and over.

When there were no race restrictions and no homeland it was super rare to have families living together, but it did happen and was pretty awesome.

The issue i see is that as long as we have race restrictions we will need strong families around to provide the resources. That's why we have the family limit to basically four. This also reduces the diversity of towns you spawn into since there are fewer options.

People were also so desperate to experience early game that they would leave town making pseudo eve settlements.

I think a big issue was people played favorites with fams and one would often be the favorited one. Often because people started projects or had some personal ties in those families.

Infrastructure still happened and people would build roads. I honestly haven't seen extreme changes in regards to roads. Even then it probably has more to do with the introduction of the paver than the fact biome restrictions exist. Plus walled cities used to be important to reduce the risk of theft and etc. Which honestly was a strong point in the game. Currently walls play no purpose but to keep people warm and even then the space you can contain with that is too small to be a reasonable workspace.

As long as we try and squash issue or behavior with "fixes" or mechanics to force the desired behavior we will limit the diversity of the game. We should be asking why are people behaving in this way and what are they missing that drives them to behave the way that they do.

I would prefer to see the fabric of the game influence by unfiltered player behavior than by mechanics.

Lets be real. If the world came to an end and we had to survive in a similar way to ohol, would things happen the same way they do in the game in its current state. People wouldn't trade unless there was a serious benefit to it, which there isnt. The current benefit is just being punished if you dont do it. Not what i would call unfiltered player behavior.

Race restrictions are just a clumsy system to eliminate self reliance. I honestly think it was added because people were flying through the tech tree too quickly post rift. Even in the rift, tool slots were added because people were able to rush to planes and escape a day after reset.

Any way you try and play them off race restrictions send an offensive message. If you don't see how its offensive then..

I'm really not sure what race restrictions bring to the table. Jason clearly doesn't want families living or working together or he wouldn't have added the homeland mechanic. So what is he looking for? I'm still convinced its just to keep players from preforming at full capacity, just like tool slots.

He wanted to slow us down so he had time to bug fix and add stupid bullshit like leadership. Now that hes actually adding tech i dont see the point in holding us back. The tech tree's ceiling is gray atm. You can never have enough trucks, oil, and iron. The opportunity for monumental structures and cities is there.

Biome restrictions are basically like clipping the wings of a wild bird.

#284 Re: Main Forum » Can This Game Evolve Beyond White Supremacy? » 2020-09-30 03:21:14

I think its more the case of the splashy title on a news article to get people to read it.

I hear you though. Pre rift/pre war swords was a great time for the game. Griefing also seemed to be less common then as well. But maybe i was just new and didnt notice as much.

I had given up hope as well and I thought for a long time we were stuck with tool slots as well but that was recently changed. A lot of good changes have been happening tbo. Its hard not to hope for more good changes and push for the ones you want.

Race restrictions have always left a bad taste in my mouth. Anything that makes me have to explain to a new player that i cant teach them ice cream because they're black is just..

At any rate i agree that considering alternatives would be nice. Maybe something that encourages behavior instead of forcing it. Restrictions being tied into water production is a bit much imo. And honestly anything that's tied to race is going to be touchy.

#285 Re: Main Forum » Can This Game Evolve Beyond White Supremacy? » 2020-09-30 02:09:42

Im glad you're having fun rook. But 90% of the community isnt..i guess its good someone is though.

The issue lies with the system itself. Explaining it to new players or anyone out of context doesnt sound good and pretty racist tbo.

Just because you like the result of the mechanics doesn't mean they are the right answer to the problem. What's the problem again?

I enjoy people helping, sharing, etc. It happened quite a bit before the change as well. Except it was by choice not by some artificial pressure. But the main thing i enjoy about this game is the human element. Anything that restricts that element and forces people into a box is bad imo. As much as the rift was hell, it also put the human element on full display. Ide rather players be able to express themselves to the fullest. Its what makes life interesting.

#286 Re: Main Forum » Can This Game Evolve Beyond White Supremacy? » 2020-09-29 21:42:57

Yea no one trades. Everyone is just forced to share to even get anything done.

Ever had one of those lives you just wana do something fun in town but have to travel almost your entire life collecting resources from other fams just to do it?

And by the time you have collected it, after a frustrating experience of chasing people around with a piece of paper, you're too old to even do what you wanted to do.

Thats trade for you. Its boring, monotonous, and really just a wall to slow players down. The interactions we get from it are artificial.

You question if we play the game but i question if you played the game prior to the addition of race restrictions.

#287 Re: Main Forum » Can This Game Evolve Beyond White Supremacy? » 2020-09-29 19:24:41

Get your head out of your ass rookwood.

My statement was about the impression the balancing gives. An impression that's not hard to pick up on if you have more than two brain cells.

It also sounds like you seem to like race restrictions..

My point was that gingers don't *need* the other races past a certain tech tier while all of the others are completely reliant on gingers for water. A town doesn't always need glass or rubber... they don't need stuff for cravings to survive either. All a family needs to survive is water. If one race has absolute control over the water and iron supply is that not unbalanced?

Race restrictions were supposed to encourage(force) interactions between families. So what's the difference in having them or not if one family can pretty much live in isolation sitting at high tech while the others can't get past newcommen?

Families interacted a lot beyond griefing. Families also had an identity that wasn't purely skin deep. Sometimes families would even live in the same village. Not because they had to, but because they wanted to.

It also gave the opportunities to have incredibly varied lives. You could spawn in a small village one life, an opulent one the next, and a mobile village building a large road after that. Race restrictions, homeland, and even springs limit the variability of towns and experiences. The less random you make things the more predictable and boring they become.

#288 Re: Main Forum » Should SID babies have bones? » 2020-09-29 14:45:22

No one would have problems with SIDs if they didnt drop bones. 2 min can be a long time when 300 people are on the server.

#290 Re: Main Forum » Can This Game Evolve Beyond White Supremacy? » 2020-09-29 07:57:32

If you actually pay attention biome restrictions send a dark message. As much as this game plays off gingers as being a race, they're not. Its a recessive gene among whites. Ive avoided bringing this up, to avoid what will likely happen but here goes.

In terms of pure tech progression:

Blacks make sulfur and horses.

Browns make latex and palm kernels.

Whites can speak good?

Ginger can make oil. Once they do they can make more oil, and more oil and more..

What does oil make? Water and iron. What does that make? Food and everything else. Past the first oil pump gingers never need any of the other races besides for tires and belts for engines. Once they have enough engines and trucks they dont need the other races. Rubber is basically useless. Ive avoided bringing this up for obvious reasons. Jason will likely nerf engines, oil, iron, trucks, etc. Instead of removing a stupid system he seems to think is great for the game.

Its time to wake up. Biome restrictions are broken and add nothing to the game beyond making families reliant on each other. Reduces the risk of having one fam be dominant while others struggle. Which is a community problem, not a mechanical problem. You should be asking yourself why are people gravitating to *this* fam in comparison to the others instead of asking how to force people to gravitate to these fams instead of this one.

Being a race used to be a feature, not some type of racist mechanic that is completely unbalanced.

But yea back to the dark message. Blacks and browns are to be used by whites until they reach a certain tech tier then they are completely expendable. Huh.. very woke jason. Im sure this is some progressive statement about history and abuse towards minorities. If not.......

How about the fact that bowls can be stacked with right click in their first stack but require you to left click every other stack. If you right click a flat stone with a hot *anything* with tongs you pick up the flat rock, ruining your pace. These elements and many others require getting used to.

True, it would waste allot of time. Another problem is that with a fenced in town with ally gates I don't think you can even let vistors from other towns inside your gate unless they follow the leader of your town (or follow a follower of your leader).

you can manually put the ally gate in open state if you are one of the owners.

What's the difference between that and having no gate though. Back in the rift/no biome restrictions it made sense since the only time suck was letting someone in or out, which wasn't an issue if you managed ownership properly. The only places gates have is when families are self reliant. Otherwise they are just a waste of time. Dead content as far as I'm concerned. Right along side crude cars, planes, and bonsais.

#293 Re: Main Forum » Another One Hourish Review From Steam » 2020-09-28 19:20:40

It might be two buttons but it takes hundreds of hours to get good at using them. Knowing how each object reacts with either left or right click. Many things you can right click on the tile to pick it up, some require you to click the object itself. Some things combine into new objects if you right click some dont. Sometimes you can just right click all over the place sometimes you have to alternate between left and right. To get fast you have to have the sequences memorized. No one with less than 3 hours is going to have mastered those elements and i can remember them being frustrating when i started as well.

Keep in mind this person was likely playing without zoom or any mod support.

#294 Re: News » Update: Solo Challenge » 2020-09-28 03:37:01

Honestly i think going back to more families that have smaller populations that are self reliant is a better option. Would stabilize the issue when there is a huge influx of players.

The biggest pressure in this game is people. The more people you have the harder it is to maintain things. It also makes people who arnt contributing to maintenance a liability. Puts a huge amount of pressure on experienced players and the town is likely to drown in the high demand the population requires. Smallish fams are relatively easy to maintain and give great opportunities to teach.

Most people who manage the biome restriction maintenance are experienced enough to teach but are forced to travel around their entire lives just to keep their family stable. So again new players are thrown under the bus.

Jason, its time to consider if you want a game that can capture an audience or one that you can test bench against a small population of experienced players.

#295 Re: Main Forum » Another One Hourish Review From Steam » 2020-09-28 03:30:05

Honestly yea i would scrap the tutorial and just make it the solo challenge with tips. Most players just want to jump in and experience the game. The tutorial doesn't *efficiently* teach enough to justify it wasting new players time and even taking the wind out of their sails in regards to the game. It would be cool to have a tutorial server for new players where a lot of stuff is dumbed down. Could be fun for testing balancing as well.

#296 Re: News » Update: Solo Challenge » 2020-09-26 18:43:48

People dont build fences because there really isn't any reason to with the game in its current climate. Any time that would be gained from using a town fence for dealing with griefers would be lost ten fold.

If you forgot, every family is completely reliant on one another. Having fences up is only going to slow down or even disable families from sharing resources. Ever ran around a town fence whistling at people and no one comes? Not to mention someone having to spend a good portion of their life repairing the fence every other generation.

This is why i built stone walls in the rift. A generation or two builds it and future generations never have to touch it again.

Time is wasted when someone wants in or out. Town fences and walls were only important in the rift because there were tons of people trying to raid and steal from towns, kill off families, etc. With biome restrictions families cant play selfishly anymore and succeed. So creating barriers between your family and others is pointless. Its hard enough to communicate with other families over resources, no ones going to make that even more difficult by putting a literal wall in the way.

#297 Re: Main Forum » Abuse by Griefers » 2020-09-26 03:21:36

I agree gogo. Old system was way better but 1 hour wasnt enough punishment for 1 curse over eight. Maybe 5 hours per curse over 8, played in game?

#298 Re: Main Forum » Abuse by Griefers » 2020-09-25 19:55:03

Yea i feel you destiny. It wont likely solve the problem, not sure anything will, but it could potentially alleviate it some. Pvp is a pretty huge part of most survival games so i think a lot of players coming in expect a similar thing in ohol. Raids and griefers are super common in games like ark and rust.

I think there will always be a small niche that purely wants to ruin other people's experience. But i think they will be rare and will be easier to manage when its only a few still playing like that.

Before the kill mechanic change 90% of the griefing i saw was just random stabbings and griefers being dramatic. It was super rare i ran into one that was sabotaging the town. Obviously engine scrapping and removing engines from wells hasnt helped. There probably should be some QOL change to make those risks less likely. (Only elders can scrap engines, chain an engine to a well that require an elder removal notice, etc)

I think some people just want blood. If we can give them what they desire and in a way that doesnt damage anyone else's experience i think thats a win for everyone. One person going to war against another is two less people who might have been inclined to grief.

#299 Re: Main Forum » Abuse by Griefers » 2020-09-25 18:06:14

What about if instead of families going to war, individuals could volunteer to be warriors. Similar to the war mechanic only warriors would be able to attack warriors. That way people who enjoy playing that way could play with each other while keeping the overall impact to a minimum.

Babies would be cancelled on warriors. Spawn weight redirected to the other females. A limit to how many female could register to avoid fams being killed off by a bunch of people turning into warriors. Age limit to join and the option to become a warrior would open immediately upon becoming infertile.

A bit half baked but i could see this kind of thing attracting griefer player types and would give them an outlet thats spicey enough to deter them from messing with people who dont want to be involved.

Perhaps they dont even kill each other. Maybe its something like they knock each other out for a few seconds. Knockouts would have a cool down to avoid getting stun locked. For each knockout you get a point. The person with the highest points is given some title and a special badge. When they die it goes to the player with the next highest points.

#300 Re: Main Forum » Abuse by Griefers » 2020-09-25 13:25:43

Lol. Completely misunderstood what i meant but ok. Let me spell it out for you.

They need an outlet that they enjoy that isnt ruining the game for everyone else.
