This new map update seems like a huge improvement! I played a life last night for the first time since Friday, and I had a pleasant time! Resources seemed plentiful, aside from milkweed (Eis town only had one milkweed plant that I knew of). I was wondering if we were even in the rift at all. I spent my childhood years in disbelief, fed some sheep and reinforced their pen, then had 5 kids, was able to cloth them all, then spent my elder years gathering kindling and logs. Ended standing by the fire chatting with a nice young man.
I think I read something on the OHOL discord about peace treaties being in the works. Don't know the details but I imagine it's something like one elder writing a note with a pre-determined phrase that the game recognizes (like how naming works) then saying "I agree" or something. If elders over 50 from both families agree they become tagged as 'family' by the system. Presumably disabling use of war swords and allowing curses or something like that.
Age works really well as a gatekeeping method here because it prohibits players under a certain age to use long phrases by default. Similar to how kids can't curse or name anyone until they grow up. It also maximizes the amount of investment that a player has in their family by limiting use of peace treaties until you've already spent almost an hour in that community. So it's not just anyone that can make a peace treaty, it's someone with a more concrete interest in their family.
I'm not sure how the treaty would be broken though, maybe something like geographic speciation. One of the families dies out in town and if distant survivors don't interact with the other family for a certain amount of time they become unrelated foreigners again. Anyway, I think a mechanic for officially joining two friendly families would help a lot in promoting diplomacy. The way it is now you can never -really- trust a foreigner.
Jason posted on the forum somewhere yesterday that he's implementing peace treaties and how it works.
Ah, here it is:
What I will be adding soon is this:
If you speak the word PEACE in another family's language (or if you are bilingual b/c of learning as a BB), then it unites the families in peace, and the war sword simply doesn't work anymore (it behaves as if you are one big family).
This is similar to how cursing works now, where if you know their language, you can curse them. If you know how to say PEACE, you can make peace with them.
This makes a clear distinction between true strangers (potential raiders, etc.) and people from different fams who are coexisting in one village long-term.
(And this does not affect knives and bows).

Seems interesting. Curious to see how it works out.
In the game we have a tribal community, the most perfect system in the history of mankind, not communism.
This.
I had to try so hard not to lol at work.
What is that expression again..? Oh yes, a picture is worth a thousand words.
Aptly described Morti.
What a shame.
Yeah I haven't played since Friday night and I don't plan to until after the next update. Game just feels futile right now.
What if the baby has a back pack too, and that baby had a backpack? Can we have an infinite baby carrier
Lol. Would just have to make it so you can't wear a BP inside of a BP.
This is a good change. I'm not sure it will make much practical difference in a lot of cases without other changes following it, but it's a good step. Thanks.
Take care
AmberA, please come back soon.
Tool-geek, I'm working on it!
Gonna be the best game ever..... but that's no easy task. There will be MANY more huge bumps along the road to greatness. So buckle up!
How many features of this game have never existed before in the history of multiplayer computer games?
--Getting born as a baby.
--Having family members (aunts, uncles, cousins, grandkids)
--Getting named by your mother, and having named family lines
--A family tree browser
--Saying goodbye and the end of your short life and passing your stuff on to the next generation
--Other cultures speaking a different learnable language, and going through the process of radical translation as a player.
--A consensual homesteading system, and inheritable property
--A player-triggered apocalypse with the power to reset the entire world
--YUM chains to actually motivate a varied diet.
--A grand arc that the whole world goes through, from times of wild plenty, through booming civilization, through inevitable decay and end times (what I'm working on right now).So that's 10 major features that are each crazy, innovative experiments. Who knew, ahead of time, that any of this would even work at all? On paper, it's a game that doesn't work! Everyone said that trolls would kill all their own babies, so good luck with this dumb game, dude.
So this game is nothing but the product of crazy, bold experimentation.
And that experimentation will continue. Endlessly, as long as I'm working on this game. Don't expect it to stop. Why would you want it to stop?
This is clearly what you paid for. You can't watch that trailer and NOT see a game that dares to try something totally new.
BTW.... you've all had the rift for 4 days now. 4 days out of 465 that the game has been running. That's less than 1% of the days. 99% of the days did not have the rift. AND THE WORLD IS ENDING, GAME IS DEAD, JASON SUX.
THE DRAMA!
I get it, though, b/c this game is so friggin' great and you're all so invested. That's good. The drama is good. It's not boring.
And that's my job. I'm the not-boring man.
Were the past four days the most boring 1% of days in OHOL? God, how many pages of Discord, I can't even scroll back. You guys are bored out of your minds! It's like watching paint dry, this whole OHOL thing. Game is totally stalled. Dev is lazy. Game hasn't had an update in months.
No wait, game is changing every week in interesting and tantalizing and thought-provoking ways. This is actually the most exciting and varied and interesting development process IN THE HISTORY OF VIDEO GAMES. I'm not joking here. If you don't believe me, go back through the weekly update history news posts. Then find me another game that had this much interesting stuff happen in 15 months.
And on top of that, it's all being done by one guy. Just one guy, working alone. EVERY PEN LINE A SUPREME ACT OF WILL.
And on top of that, I'm having the time of my life!
So thank you, all of you, for making this possible. You've all made my wildest dreams come true.
No one thinks you're lazy. And your game does have a lot of unique features, that's what was so appealing about it. The thing is you seem to be pushing it more in a direction to be more like others: just another PvP game. With the most minimalistic combat mechanics to ensure that the PvP element isn't even interesting.
Saolin, you are right, my ego is out of control, a wild stallion of hubris.
I will hand you the reigns to my bridle, and you can mount me like a trusty, muscular steed and ride me into the sunset of game design brilliance.
Brilliance, I tell you.
With your guidance, I can change! I promise, I can change my ways. I just need a good smack on the hindquarters every now and again.
Oh wait, I just designed games for an extra day. I'm not just in orbit.... I just left the solar system!
I have now been designing games for.... 15 years, 1 month, 17 days.
Look out, everyone, tomorrow will be another day. My brilliance will be blinding tomorrow.
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
So you designed games for 14 years and then finally got one that wasn't a failure. Good job. Your ego will be your own undoing if you're not careful. You can change if you want to.
Spoonwood wrote:You are unduly arrogant to believe that I would ever say that. I'm sure I wouldn't.
I'm sure you would say that! That is my prediction. Spoonwood will dramatically change his mind someday, once he realizes the error of his ways.
Prove me wrong someday when I write a book and ask you for a quote.
Send me your address, and I'll send you a free copy of the book that was written about my work. Not by me, but about me. You will love it! It will show you REAL GAME DESIGN, and it will make you weep with humiliation.
Which other game designer had an entire book devoted to just their work? Not very many! Not you, down in the baggage area.
When you make 19 games, you too will have a first class ticket to game design perfection!
Wow. It's a shame so many game devs succumb to their own arrogance and thirst for power. Is this whole thing just a power trip to you?
Why you so bad, Lava?
Not sure if serious or sarcastic, so I will respond as though seriuos.
When spawning in early game villages it is tough to survive and generally score will go down.
When spawning in late game villages it is easy to survive until 60 if you know what you are doing, so score will go up.
Sponwood, how many games did Tyler Sylvester make, though, and how long has he been doing it?
Making one game is one thing.
I made NINTEEN, count 'em yourself, if you don't believe me. You know, as well as I do, that SHEER QUANTITY rules the roost. My quantity is staggering.
Spoonwood, I don't even think you're in coach class. You're down in the baggage area, breathing thin air with exploding lithium batteries that aren't supposed to be checked in baggage. You're trying to sneak through customs without a ticket.
Because I didn't just make one indy game and steal Prisoner's Architecture graphics in the process, and then write a book about game design after that!
No, I made 19 games without stealing any graphics, and WROTE NO BOOK AT ALL.
If I ever wrote a book, though, I'd give you a preview copy, so that you can provide me with a quote for the back cover:
I was wrong. Jason Roar is in fact the greatest living game designer. Wow, he really is the best there is, bar none.
--Spoonwood
(not a real quote----YET! See what I did there?)
Wow. I've tried to be tactful but now i see this. Jason are you feeling threatened and insecure? Maybe a bit manic and delusional? A person who is the best at what they do recognizes that they are not perfect and stays quiet. You seem like you're unsure of yourself and are spiraling upward in an insecure mania in an attempt to get others to back down. It would be unreasonable to expect things to be perfect, but no one enjoys an arrogant person or a big dick contest. You should reconsider your approach to (or presence in) this forum, and re-evaluate what is really important here to you: a successful game or stroking your own ego. This is not a fan club, people are here to provide you with unsolicited feedback to your game. (privately) appreciate it.
Pretty much all I heard on discord last night was "JASON REMOVE THIS UPDATE."
Yeah, that's not helpful.
I've been working on this all week, and thinking about it and discussing it with people for many weeks. Of course, it's impossible to predict exactly what will happen, which is why it needs to be tested live.
Three hours of pain is not then end of the world, folks, in the scope of a game that has been up and running for over 11,000 hours.
There will be many more little hours of pain in the future. That's the way game development works sometimes.
I realize that you're all just trolling me with how "upset" you seem to get. For some reason, I keep falling for it. I'll try to stop falling for it.
In general people are not trolling you. They are sharing their emotional reaction, not just to express it for themselves, but for you to hear it and be aware of it. They aren't always right, but it is information available for you to use.
I think the current update has a lot of potential. By increasing the hardship I think it should decrease the conflict; it's not as practical to grief when you can't just survive for free off other's hard work, and it's a struggle to survive yourself. One thing I'd like to recommend is that you play your own game once in a while, perhaps 2 hours a week. I mean no offense, but a lot of times when you share your thoughts you seem really out of touch with the state of the game. No one understands your vision for the game better than you, and there is no better feedback than your own personal experience. In most situations someone in your position would have hired people to test things for them.
Also, I get why your ego would be (justifiably) large, but it rubs people the wrong way. Everyone knows you have all the power and control. In a supplier-consumer situation in general, feedback tends to take the form of complaints (otherwise people usually say nothing). It would go a long way to improve the quality and tone of your feedback if you could resist the urge to "dunk you in my sticky pool of game design prowess". You've created a great game here which has very unique qualities that differentiates it from other games, there is no need to try to model your game after another game.
"to make the greatest game of all time"
It's really nice to have a dev that is this motivated and not some cash grab, nice trailer, big promises followed by a slow and steady decrease in updates and finally an unfinished dead game that had a lot of potential, like there is so many on steam...
Too bad some community members cant just enjoy the ups and downs and put even a tiny ammount of thought and effort into constructive criticism or even better some valuable feedback on their experience of the game.
Negativity is the lowest effort and just ends up achieving nothing valuable.
It's perfectly fine to rant and vent every now and then but when it's 90% of the forum posts it just makes you want to not read it and not participate.
I usually wont read posts when i know this user is going to mostly be ranting and saying nothing really interesting, waste of time.
Too bad, we could really share some interesting feedback, experiences and ideas to improve the game in a meaningful way.
I truly believe that everyone has their own unique and interesting perspective that could improve the game in some way but putting this perspective under layers of shit is just not going to achieve anything.
If you really think about it, it's when you break something that you realize it's flaws and weakpoints and figure out how to make it truly great and not just mediocre or half-assed.
If you want a great game then pain is part of the process unless you prefer something mediocre that everybody will forget eventually.
Next time you are frustrated or angry after a life ask yourself what REALLY caused the issue, look at all the pieces of the puzzle that led to this particular event and not just the last seconds before it happened.
If you noticed something that sticked out or that you keep thinking about, maybe you're onto something.
Share it on the forums, something great could come from it.
You're not wrong. The important thing to realize though, is players are under no obligation to offer any feedback whatsoever. The vast majority of players are not going to sit down and think critically about the feedback they can offer. In general they are going to tend towards bluntly sharing their emotional reaction to what they experience. While this doesn't excuse toxic people from conducting themselves as an ass-hat, it is important to be aware of the level of investment that should be reasonably expected and receive the feedback accordingly.
Biggest issue I think is needing to use wondibles map to scout where you should be setting up towns (until we learn the map a bit better by memory) and the constant baby bombs right now.
I definitely don't think the update is bad but that it's just having a rocky start at the moment.
Players shouldn't need to use any additional mods, or apps, or whatever to be able to succeed at the game. IMO, the game should be closed-source so mods aren't possible, though i do agree a small field-of-view increase would be nice, things like seeing through trees is ridiculous. I always feel proud of myself when i discover a significant item hidden behind a tree. Other players just hack to be able to see it at a glance. It's unfair. I would go on to tell a story, but that's not really the point. A level playing field is healthier for the game.
good luck aiming for the stars jason.
im not totally against the fenche constrain, but the overall gameplay just got more randoim and a lot dumber.
Dude, what is your deal? It seems like you are constantly bragging about griefing techniques you pulled off, while simultaneously condemning griefers. "they crafted a knife, so i lured 15 bears to town". To quote the Simpsons: "What is your major malfunction?" Considering the amount of time you seem to put into this game, you seriously need to re-examine yourself. No joke. And my apologies if you are having a rough time in your life. But now is the time to figure out what is wrong and address it. Good god.
in general i agree. I think there needs to be at least a small age limit on cursing though. I imagine babies spawning in, cursing someone, then /die.
Everyone needs to be target-able by cursing though, not just family. If there was a family vs family brawl, pretty sure few would bother cursing anyone other than a grievous offender , players understand the situation, or most at least seem to favor killing over cursing.
I know there was an update which was bad but now it's really bad this evening. Maybe it's because everyone is getting off of work and school or something. But this evening every life I've had looks something like this:
http://i68.tinypic.com/2n1i1jo.png
Multiple babies popping out over and over and since there is no food, we all die and corpses pile up in a mass of screaming babies and adults trying their hardest to actually build a village.
Anyone having better luck?
lol, and it got worse before it got better. There was at least 3 more babies there at the peak. I was one of the babies. The woman who is saying "you are sam" ran around feeding everyone, couldn't believe she didn't starve (while i was there).
Rimworld is a single player game.
Nice try, though!
--the dev.
What is this?
"HaHa, you thought you could escape but you were wRoNg!"
You're normalizing murder by killing people in this game for petty reasons.
Murders are a real problem in this society and it is MUCH worse than homophobia!!
You are offending me by killing people over use of words!
I will kill you for that!Do you see the problem with your mindset?
Where does the victim rhetoric end?
Anything you say to anyone could be offending.
Do you think we need to build "safe spaces" where literally nobody speaks because anybody could get offended at any moment?
So you're saying murdering someone in a GAME is worse than using slurs that are offensive in real life? Ok...
Wow I can't believe how many people are defending this. Bigotry should be frowned upon. You oughta be ashamed of yourselves. I understand a teenager being deliberately offensive to be "edgy". But sooner or later you gotta learn that it is not ok. Would you walk up to someone in real life and use a slur? Alienating entire groups of people is not acceptable.
I have mixed feelings about the communication in this game. On the one hand, time is a very limited resource, so being able to communicate more effectively would really help. A lot of times communication is too effortful and also hit or miss on whether it will even be responded to in a useful way. On the other hand, the limited communication makes interacting a lot more cute since often players will just type a few key word instead of a full proper sentence. It tends to come across in a cute way which compliments the cute graphics of the game.
Some problems with property fences:
1. It takes a long time to set up your own property if you want to make something more than just a sheltered milkweed farm. You don't have the time in one life to make anything even close to self-sustaining. By the time your property is starting to come together, you will be dying soon, so personally you won't get much real use from it. You can pass it along to your kids but...
2. The people you are keeping out with a property fence are the same people you're allowing in (through birth). Why keep anyone out if there's no difference between those who are inside from those outside. The person you want outside the most could be born to you inside your walls.
3. In general the property owner is going to rely on an outer community being present in order to have access to everything they need. You'll be taking tools, water, etc. in order to set up your property since you don't have enough time in your life to make all these things yourself. By setting up your own private property you are being a leech on the community, as you are increasing the communities resource cost while keeping the benefit all to yourself. As such it is in the best long term interest of the community to eliminate a player doing so.
why do i have to wait 25 minutes for a life>
Because you keep using /die I'd imagine. It seems almost impossible to run out of lives if you aren't doing this. You just have to make it to 30 on average to tread water.
In my experiences gingers tend to be disproportionately targeted by griefing, and more likely to be used as griefers.
sigmen4020 wrote:Does the new male models have an influence on birth rates, since there are now more males than females for those races? Or is it just complete coincidence? Because I remember seeing much more frequent ginger and black families before the new characters were added.
This is a big part of it IMO. Previously those races had a 66% chance of babies being girls compared to 50% of the other families, which meant their towns lived longer and were more populated. Now that there's two new male models they have only a 40% chance of babies being girls, which means they die out much more quickly on average.
Is this actually how it works? Each character model is an equal chance to be birthed? I always assumed it would be 50/50 male/female, and then the character model would be random from the available options.
ollj wrote:the mobile port curse sytem is better, if only by its ui, and removal of age-text-limits. its 2 klicks, no need to type anything to curse, age is irrelevant. you can even curse nameless corpses?
if you klick a person, its name shows, and a curse-button may be an option. pretty sure you can even curse nameless people.Yes, You are Hope has a functioning curse system because mobile is focused more on being a working game vs OHOL aiming to be more artsy fartsy. Curse system isn't something Jason cares much for in the first place and giving the players a better working system is less likely than him removing it all together.
Is it possible to play the mobile version on a pc? Mobile version of this game sounds excruciatingly painful.
