As I understand it, it will only work for the original eve.

Other eves that happen to "respawn" in the same town might be just of the eve-spiral hitting that town by chance I guess.

All of them? Well not so drastic like this, but maybe one or two daughters that turn out to be too stupid to put food in their mouth.

Also just was in a town that was brimming with food. Lots of free backpacks (due to playerbase going down I guess)... and all dudes, just 1 girl. They didn't die of yet. But as I died she was nearing 40 and the one girl she had was sudden infant death...

We're really going in circles here, and if it's tiresome, yes.

realistic -> it's not. A newborn running of at full speed of a grown up into a bear cave pulling out the bear is not realistic. That due to gamefication we may not want to force babies to crawl is another story, but the combo is just not realistic.

this feature is worthwhile -> what is actually the "feature"? Not having the feature?

one bad experience -> as I said multiple times, I didn't even have that bad experience myself.

it's not a big issue -> must each suggestion be a "big issue"? Can't we also talk about the tiny things now and then? Similar like the post that complains that chickens are shown in carts face down? Do you also tell them, it's no big issue, hundrets of players have played this game... etc. It's not. It's still something improvable.

Just wanted to point out rl quick that you have way more than "15 minutes" of the full hour-long life to move around freely as a woman. Your fertility only lasts 25 minutes, from age 15 to age 40. You're also tied to your mother for food for the first 3 minutes of life. This leaves you a full 32 minutes for the rest of your life to move about as you wish- which is just about half.

Lower than 10 and older than 50 it's difficult to freely move due to the low food store.

As woman if you do not want to abandon children you have about 10 to 14 and 40 to 50 -> 15 minutes.

This. Lockpicking taking for example 60 seconds with an alert... to all nearby players would be great. With some tool that doesn't use up for this nonsense.

If everybody is okay with you picking that lock, it just takes 'n' seconds. If the majority of the town thinks you are up to no good, they can stop you with a knife.

For babies, a nice thing I've seen is simply to ask "are you new", and if they say 'Y' you give em a job, if they say 'N' you simply feed them until they run of by themselves as soon they are old enough to pick up stuff.

Wikipedia, being bored of the game is not necessarily a condition.

Wikipedia wrote:

A griefer or bad faith player is a player in a multiplayer video game who deliberately irritates and harasses other players within the game (trolling), using aspects of the game in unintended ways.[1] A griefer derives pleasure primarily or exclusively from the act of annoying other users

Personally I would also not focus on the "unintended way" so much. A griefer is a person that gets a kick of feeling from the empowerment of having made or many others angry or destroyed their work.

gabal wrote:

I never griefed but in my opinion griefers don't happen very often in early generations

This is understandable, I mean destroying an eve-village that would have likely died of anyway is not a (sick) feeling of empowerment. Of course griefers look for big towns. The anonymity the bigger the place helps too.

I've never griefed in OHOL, that is doing bad stuff unpurpose. I may have made the one or other bad decissions that had ill effect on others tough. I experimented with griefing in other online games, simply because I wanted to understand it. Made me feel bad tough.

If something is griefing or part of (role)play is all about the intention. For example baby snatching, if you play a tribe that wants to grow by baby snatching from a town and then raise the children, fair enough. In terms of survivability it might be smarter to play collaborative but anyway all fair and square in my opinion.

If you do baby snatching to lock somebody up and force feed him, only to enjoy the idea to have some player somewhere being miserable they cannot suicide, they cannot respawn, then this would be griefing.

It is possible to make an isolated town. A stone wall, once ancient is imperishable. Well at least until one week not viewed by any player the whole area is reset.

Inside you can have wild berry bushes and cactus fruits nurture a small population forever. It needs to be quite some area with bushes and cactus fruits to hold a family alive. Guess lineage wipe will be rather soon, either since bad luck of female draw due to already small population. Or players getting utterly bored and how realistic it is to build such a wall is another matter... you'll need stones from a very large area I guess.

This specific example, no it wouldn't hurt normal players really to have babies be able to wake bears, but it's also not a really big issue as many has stated.

Well you just claimed in the previous post and I never said it was a big issue. I just found it surprising. As I said it was I that accidentally released a bear on a village because I really didn't think it would work. And yes I was even reborn into that village about half an hour later and yes that bear was still roaming around and killing people.

And yes if I would have considered a big issue my original post surely would have made a better elaborated case.  It just surprises me the arguments that come against me. The thing I may have not seen is that this whole baby-bear thing has become some kind of iconic thingy in the past?

As wolfgang said, its about everyone being able to do something without restraints, because as soon as you start to implement them, its a slippery slope. Sometimes things are ruined not by the unchecked elements but too harsh of checks across the board.

Generally I agree. On the specific issue of a baby not being able to do anything else but wake bears until the age 4 I don't. I really simply taught this was an overlook in the code.

I agree with this point a lot, when did that change? What is the issue of babies running full speed that needs to be addressed, while having negative impacts possibly such as this?

Someone posted here as alternative idea to the baby runoff bear poking thing. My response was, maybe, but I'm not really fond of the idea because of said issue of surprise babies even more limiting females radius of mobility.

Psykout, I know you got some vendetta about me. But I'll just ignore it. (Edit: but no, to try to frame me that I insulted somebody is not ok. I didn't. I admitted with the second sentence, it may have been an error to assume it would be selfevident)

No, I just don't see how removing babies (that are able to running at full speed) to poke sleeping bears would "hurt a normal player just as much".

And before you misunderstand, again. No, I'm not asking necessarily to make babies only be able to crawl.. which yes would hurt normal players when they pop out a child in the wild thats unable to follow them at reasonable speed.

#317 Re: Main Forum » Meta: Showing you are willing to nurse » 2018-12-05 11:18:52

Teaching can in my opinion only realistically start in childhood when the kid can speak a few letters and already can start monkey-see-monkey-do. And that wouldn't need to be a mum but a worker doing his/her job.

But yes, a good nurse would drop off / sent a newbie kid at a place of teaching once it reaches childhood. Until then it really just a wait and 'F' game..

#318 Re: Main Forum » Meta: Showing you are willing to nurse » 2018-12-05 10:48:13

Of course I'd be thankful for a new item for this purpose. Albeit there isn't anything iconic we associate with nursery teachers. Or?

Anyway, this topic should be about to start meta-working with what we have.

#319 Re: Main Forum » Meta: Showing you are willing to nurse » 2018-12-05 10:38:24

Nurses don't need fire when in a jungle or the edge of a desert biome possibly with the combo of bear rugs.

Unfortunally many newbies don't get that. Have already been put in the fire in the desert ...

Okay nursery is an issue in many towns, yet it should be used so the majority of females still can live a productive live other than picking up their babies every now then. At worst I saw a group of mums standing together each taking care of "their" kids only.

Nursery comes to the rescue, but two issues I've seen from both sides. You see already a women taking care of a bunch of kids. You'll have to make sure she is willing to also nurture yours. In a busy fast going town with lots speech bubbles going on not so easy. Similar when I'm watching kind I'm totally okay with other women dropping of theirs. Even tried to tell some it's okay they can go, I'll look after their kid.

So Idea, could we develop as meta a piece of clothing to mark a nurse / show you are willing to nurse? It should be: Rarely used other than this, easy enough to make for middle-tech villages, as non-isolating as possible, as the nurse will be standing on a temperature place for the kids. Also may better be non-tattering.

Ideas:
leaf crown: pro: highly distinguishable, rarely used, no isolation. cons: difficult to make, people tend to get crazy about this ****
red cross apron: people produce this too much out of some reason.
toque blanche: mostly good in set categories, but does it fit*?
straw hat: used too much
reed skirt: that would be my favorite.

* As in my opinion the nursery would best be attached to the bakery it might be a good nurse mark still tough.

#321 Re: Main Forum » Birth system idea » 2018-12-05 09:37:25

"should" isn't ment here in a normative way, but what statistical thinking would imply. At first sight as a woman you 'should' have 6 children if the playerbase triples during your life...

I don't understand your position tough. You are advocating a total luck of the draw system, but at the same time criticizing any idea that would polish some rough edges of that "child-clue-gender-lottery" as not being perfect but still have a considerable random component in it.

For example, judging by the average age of your 'n' last lives isn't perfect yes. Yes there a free loafers (which would reduce my guess on clue-percentage even somewhat) and there are murders. But judging from my family trees only a small percentage of children get murdered and a good portion of them may have deserved it as I did bore griefers as well. It ain't perfect and it may be unlucky if you "one almost guaranteed to become elder" child turns out to be freeloafer.. but it ain't worse as the total luck of the draw responsible for most family tree wipes sooner or later

Every life that I have seen someone with a crown, there always ended up being some interesting RP. Not always from the person wearing it when im born, but sometime during the life at least. In one town I was born twin females with my friend and an old lady gave him a gold crown as a child before she died. When he grew up, he declared himself queen and began trying to instruct new children that were born on what to do when they grow up and such. As he had children, he told each one that they could be ruler one day if they outlive him and are better than their siblings. He had something like 6 or 7 children, all boys except 1. Some of the children RPd as royalty well and made for some fun interactions. As time went on the oldest sibling took his mother off to the side and asked for permission to do what needed to be done, and after being granted permission, proceeded to kill off the members of the previous royal bloodline as most of them seemed to be griefers.

During this witch hunt, the queen was killed by a misplaced arrow and died in a field in town. She had not yet chosen an heir, and all of the siblings had been present for the hunt. A bloodbath ensued. The brothers all killed each other until only one remained, and as he put on the crown and began to speak his sister casually walked up and stabbed him as well, before being killed by a small child who had picked up a knife who wanted to end the battle once and for all. Me being near death due to old age at this point, I searched far and wide for a member of the royal bloodline, but alas they were all dead and I was the last. I gave the crown to the child who killed the princess, as she had earned the right, and promptly died on the spot after telling her to continue our rule.

------------------------------------

Ive had a couple other very fun interactions involving crowns, but its always exciting when I am born and see someone with a crown somewhere.

Haha, that old lady was me, you can see her life in the ".(potential) Megathread". Crazy how people get their head around a worthless piece of metal. Next time I got handed a crown or got my hands on one I will just hide it deep in the wilderness tough. Preferable give it to some lady of some lake to give it someone worthy only. smile

This drama that unfolded has nothing to do with "griefing" tough.

#323 Re: Main Forum » Birth system idea » 2018-12-05 08:35:06

Yesterday following thought occurred to me. I played one of these dull female lives in a larger town. Even before I could set of to make a backpack I started popping out babies like crazy. So I went to the bakery and spent most of my life nursing for the kids and some backing. It was boring and the kids constantly interrupted getting anything useful to do. But on the other hand, I did get that family line on, yes? No! Looking at the family tree none of that many kids that I had to care of and kept interrupting me made it to become an adult, only one guy made it to 30. Everyone else died before 10. A life utterly wasted.

Now the taught is, suppose the amount of players online stays about roughly equal. How many children should I have as a female? Actually only two. If every player would be fertile, everyone would have to have about one child if the playerbase stays constant. But since only half of them are, females should get about two. However how many did I get? Six. Why? Well guess because only 15-20% of the playbase got a clue, everyone else seems to spawn in fast cycle life after life and dying young. Which soon ends them up as Eves further damaging established towns taking away players.

How about as female we're at least guaranteed to have 1 of our kids to have a clue? Preferably if the famliy line is thinned out a female? Easy way to judge, did they in their last life became an elder or died young (skipping suicides as death before 4)

#324 Re: Main Forum » Food per Iron (Long-term) Math » 2018-12-05 08:25:19

That 14year old can kill 1 person before getting killed himself. I don't see the issue. However I've yet to see a town with more knifes than people anyway to judge it in practice.

Well sabotaging and enjoying other peoples (real not role played) misery is what griefing is about. You are talking about a different thing then.

There is no "roleplay" in continuing to shear the last sheep the second it is unwatched until the compost cycle breaks and to counter that guarding the pen a whole life is a boring job. There isn't "roleplay" as in running into the bakery and put on an adobe on the oven to make it a kiln. There isn't a "roleplay" in running around town and sharpening all the stones you can find and turning all the flint into arrowheads (which can be a huge annoyance in an older town where you have to go quite a way into the wilderness to find rocks/flint). There isn't a "roleplay" in filling each and every bowl with something useless hard to empty and clutter all the town with it. And yes to the other thread, there isn't a "roleplay" in popping out as a baby, let yourself being fed and then run away full speed to poke bears just to be likely reborn in this village again. You can do this quite a few times until the 30 minute lineage ban kicks in.

Would the game be utterly boring if none of these things happened? I doubt it. And bears would better be just naturally go out of their cave every so often to hunt for food.

In my opinion it is all about proper balance. You will never be able fully stop toxic players that play to enjoy others misery. But you can balance the amount of input they have to give with the amount of damage they can cause. When as in before the curse system, due to fast respawn mechanics and little input required, a tiny minority, can disrupt a vast majority in several villages for good. Something is broken. And if it gets too much and there is too little to oppose it, it will make stop people playing.

In my opinion the game is in it's core a "PvE" not "PvP". And no, society didn't evolve to handle criminals. Because then it would have been better off everyone would just life by themselves as some animals do. Societies evolved to handle nature as community... as also many animals live naturally in a herd. And thats not to stop "griefer animals".
