Ooh if you ever need April Fools update ideas, do the crazy mixed faces! Women with beards, men with lush lashes! And it would be really crazy and clunky looking!

#327 Re: Main Forum » Fun with genetics! (Pictures involved! UPDATED 2019) » 2019-02-06 18:31:40

Another thing regarding fanart - I am actually rather discouraged to draw the same guy again once I drew them already. I lived some cool lives as the curly haired man and the bob cut girl, but when I draw fanart of these four different lives (with these two skins), it looks like they are the same people I'm drawing. If it was so that in the other life the guy was a man with curly black hair and with different shaped eyes, I'd be way more interested to draw both guys and both lives as they already have some differences to work with - and exaggerate their differences to ensure they have their own identities.

Like let's say bob cut girl Lila lived a dangerous hunting life. I draw the hunter girl Lila with her bob cut and some clothes she wore. She has a serious face and that's who she was as a person.
Then I draw bob cut girl Opal who was a village teacher and had many fans. I draw her with her clothes too.
Then I look at the two, and well. It looks like Lila and Opal are the same girl with different phases of her life. I want to keep true to the original design of the characters but I can't exaggerate much to make them more different but not too far from the original.
Now let's say two more artists live a cool life as bob cut girl. They draw their hippie bob cut girl and their supermom bob cut girl. Again, it looks like the same girl and she is always doing something else, my bob cut girls feel less and less special. If all of those girls had different eyes, hair details and some cool little quirks like beauty marks to them, they'd be totally different people with identities straight off the bat.

Thanks, I love this stuff too!

I personally like the mix and match genetics more, as it'd be a random mixture every time you load in - a very lootbox/surprise egg moment of fun (to me). I like the idea of not having any clue on what you'll end up looking like, and the fanart that could ensue - subtle and not so subtle differences of characters would colour them more as actual people from around the world (like their players are) than classes from a selection. But yes, I can see that it wasn't built for genetics and mixing. However, if eyes and mouths matched in their position, expressions would look better too - right now sad expression clips to jaw and looks pretty ridiculous and looks wonky on some faces. smile

It's not like the full package character approach doesn't work or is not as good, it's a preference question. A pool of cosmetics would in my mind be easier to make more and more diverse while full package characters are much less versatile. It's true that full packages act more like game characters though, and can act as mascots or recognizable parts of a game.

Maybe when we get to 100 characters (or around that number) it will feel more like genetic lottery, but I can't help but wish it was an actual genetic lottery! There is just something really intriguing there, vanity RNG. But yes if one would go with genetic lottery, a lot would need to be rehauled, redesigned and programmed for it.

I gotta be honest, this thread is the most disheartening thing I've seen since I started playing OHOL and I've seen a lot of crap in game and out. Knowing that people like this exist and knowing that we are all now on one server and there is no way of escaping them... it doesn't make me angry or even sad. It's just this numbing feeling of my effort seeming pointless, a sort of apathy creeping over me.
Makes me wonder, do I really want to keep playing, should I really try my hardest if this is what I'm up against? I'd much prefer just getting pointlessly stabbed every other life to this.

When a game becomes pointless, repetitive, hollow, etc., it's a clear indication that it can't please you anymore in the way it was supposed to. This is where the mature choice is to not become destructive towards other players but rather move oneself to an environment which can and will entertain them. Immature people are selfish and put their enjoyment before others, mature people are not (or at least they are in a healthy way).
As this game has only one dev, you are bound to find yourself getting bored; first some parts of the game, then ultimately the game itself. Then you start to behave in however way you feel like - or move away and give time for the game to develop more. For some reason many players just can't let a game go and do something else for a while, I guess it feels similar to giving up and they are too headstrong to give in for such a thing. Shrug.

#330 Re: Main Forum » Do you enjoy killing people? » 2019-02-06 06:47:07

I second what Leonard said in his first post, there are better games than OHOL to enjoy. The moment I realized the game has become boring, I ceased my playing instead of starting to bother other players.

And the pulling weeds thing the other guy said. The only satisfaction I get from killing is the fact that the person is "removed from the session". Nothing else. I hate drama.

#331 Re: Main Forum » Why the complex recipe for lettering? » 2019-02-05 06:36:02

Never made a sign or wooden letters in real life (or in game) but I dare to assume that doesn't take 50 years like it does now in-game. Also having to use saplings, which are used to make home markers, arrows and tilled rows in a pinch, is making the process expensive and slow. Saplings are plentiful IRL and grow like weed, but in game, some bad rng and you will be walking to find them for a while. When you find one, you gotta get the three sapling cuts a basket can carry and then plant them and wait. I've never done signs in OHOL but I wish we could slap a note on a plank or a stick and use that to label farms and other areas. Sure they could be easily broken and then made again.
Or then letters/saplings/sticks could be acquired from other things.

Hah, I was once a mute guy for my whole life. I cleaned my keyboard and replugged it as I loaded in; I didn't notice it my whole life but a button was stuck which prevented me from writing anything, I could only use the F1-F7 commands for expressions (AWBZ mod shortcuts). The village was dying with no girls left and I noticed villagers planning to leave it behind to run for the bell town 2k away. I couldn't say anything so I just followed them - soon, I was mid-way to the bell town, looking at my only companion, my old mother, dying in the middle of nowhere, saying goodbyes to me as I made the sad expression, still mute. I think she knew not to expect words from me as she left me her goodbyes. I carried her backpack to the bell town for her, and in the end died with no last words to Old Age.

#335 Re: Main Forum » Update v195: Temperature of Desert Buffed, (Jungles still op) » 2019-02-01 05:52:38

Maybe we need more animals and skins to make early game full insulation set of clothes; deer skin, bison skin, fur boots etc.? But agh, naked and in desert/jungle just trumps it all still, with no extra effort going to insulation crafting. I guess there is no hope for settling in large grasslands, savannah or swamp. hmm We'd need some crazy rehauls here to make desert less good (shield and shelter from sun required), jungles harder to settle into without cutting down trees, biome borders just something else - maybe a transition biome to take over the edges we have normally, I dunno.

Some sorta kudos, mentioning system, would be enough. I don't need marriage, but I do want fathers. However, adoptive father is adoptive father, I wish father role was a thing like mother role is, in addition to adoptive parents - all part of raising a family and survival. But, as I have no better ideas how exactly it would happen and how family trees would link up, I'm not gonna suggest it (non-related males getting father stamp would be hilarious and amazing though). I know why it's troublesome to implement and I also want to see other updates instead.

Ok, end feminist rant.  You may now return to your normal playing of a game without considering any of the real world implications...

"You gamer guys"... tee hee hee. wink

Real life sucks in many ways, that's why I love games. I just want my bois to connect to the next gen, I'd love to have them more involved as in real life it takes two to make the next generation. I'd be as frustrated if it was the other way around; children only connected to their dads. I want both in thereee... sad Both are part of the next generation, and responsible for it. My poor little Roman Rodocker, nobody knows he raised a generation of kids and saved them all as the mother veggied away until death. His branch is a dead end even if he was the sole reason the family tree grew over ten generations taller.

#338 Re: Main Forum » Marrige » 2019-01-30 19:05:27

True, the game doesn't need marriage. True, incest would be a turn-off and would cause more issues than cartoon nudity. True, it may not add much, if anything, to the game. True, there are other things to add or fix. True, a ring is probably not the best option here with the visibility - or, it's the best one due to the visibility.

What I learnt today; from western countries, only USA restricts first cousins marrying, every other country is chill with it. big_smile ("It is estimated that 20 percent of all couples worldwide are first cousins." whaaaaa)

Marriage, eh, roleplay away. However, fathers...
I'd like to be able to link males to the next generations in a family tree. Only women get to make cool long chains of people included but males just sit in their dead-end tree branch looking at nieces connecting to the next generation with their daughters. Damn these asexually reproducing strong independent women.
If incest is an issue, make only Non-related males father-candidates - more reason to bring families together in cities: kids would have unknown fathers unless a non-related male is around (hilarious mental images of a guy fathering 18 kids in a town).
Maybe we could opt out of the responsibility or the whole dad deal. They could just not be in the dad-pool unless they craft something to address them as fathers to non-related womens' kids. I'd also like if we got birth control for girls so they'd have this sort of option too.

I just feel like a game about family, survival and social aspects is not done until we actually have a family, including a father. Why are they left out like this in a game of parenting? A family game continues to lack a part of it until fathers are included. A role of a father shouldn't be left unexplored, at least that's how I feel. I suspect fathers were in the picture in Jason's vision at least at the beginning. Then he realized it'd cause trouble and awkwardness with the spawning system and family ties. I just really want to see what this game would be like with fathers included, what kind of shenanigans it'd spur - how would players act with this included? How would players play as fathers, would they take more responsibility with children as they are their link to the next generation "in blood"?

Aw. smile You should've let your husband name your kids so they'd have gotten his surname to carry on!

It wasn't Sand Town you ended up in right? They don't have a radio there afaik, but I was ringing Sand Town bell like crazy around the time you were alive. Rung the bell thrice but I think I was on server 2 when everyone was dropped on server 1.

You naming your girl Markette reminds me of myself in one life; I asked my 'husband' to name my daughter Bernadette as his name was Bernard. Hehe! big_smile

I wish I get to be an Adam again, I wasn't yours, but I have a story of an Adam life; https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=4931
It makes a big difference in the game and how an early game family functions. I enjoyed having both 'parents' around to raise kids while sharing the knowledge of nearby biomes and locations. Both parents were useful and involved and the family grew in a good pace (unlike with twin Eves who are the closest to a 'parenting game' we can get).

Would be cool if people made trails when they run so it'd be easier to find each other. Or then the whole whistle/shout/blow into a hollow horn noisemaker so you can regroup. Or the best of all... a caravan for multiple people!

Wasn't a May but I had my first leech life yesterday; not working but being social instead. I was born to twin towns with a pair of radios there. Throughout my childhood, I just stared at the radio and people messing around with it. Got geared up thanks to a corpse. Then a pair of villagers asked me to join them to make a third radio. I had no idea how to start so after arranging copper ingots and cold glass, I wandered away from the smithy (the guys left me at the smithy and I never saw the radio enthusiasts again so why bother making a radio if you get no help).

Then I just wandered around the towns aimlessly. Bumped into a newbie who I taught stuff, nabbed a son for me and raised him in the smaller town, hunted a turkey with my newbie friend, killed an invading bear with him, took shrooms with him (son you saw nothing - oh and sorry for not taking you to hunt with us) and basically never touched a compost cycle, well or dough.

And I didn't feel bad about it. big_smile A lil' leech life here and there for all my hard work.

#348 Re: Main Forum » Questions To The Daytime Players » 2019-01-26 10:23:33

Daytime, nighttime, timezones, it doesn't really matter. Every continent, country and group of humans have rotten individuals. Or individuals having a bad day.

Yelling and arguing with people for long times usually ends up with someone getting killed. If you are quiet, it won't be you. Maybe instead of yelling about "not using three soils it wastes soil" you say "use two soil pieces, it saves soil, it's a good trick". Be smart with critique.

Someone snowballing sister: snowball them back. No need to make it other people's problem.
'Tho last time I got snowballed, a man instantly got into guard mode, ready to kill the snowballer. I didn't care, she never got me again (also, Eves, make sure tundra is far so people don't snow grief).

Bad Eve spot: their loss, just leave if they don't appreciate your critique. Again, say "let's make a warm camp in jungle" or "there is water far, let's move" or "I found a good spot, let's move". Or grab a sister who is open to moving.

Dunno why someone would stab for the stew thing, maybe it wasn't because of that? How often do you stay to argue and vent about things? If you criticize in a positive manner and make 'friendly reminders' people don't get into murder mode. "Hey man! Here, try my stew, it's a better food than berries, really useful and fills you up in one bite".

Uuugh bear towns. Eves staph. They are a death sentence. Every bear cave gets activated sooner or later.

Early stew can be great. But people have different ideas what is truly good early game. I'm interested to have a camp go without berries for early game, just to see how different it'd be.

I play at evenings in Europe and all lives differ greatly. Usually they are nice and people are nice. I can't remember the last time I have gotten killed. I have instructed players to do things differently and usually they comply or then debate against my instructions - which is fine. A man used one soil and tilled, I said using two saves steel, he said we had plenty of steel. Didn't stay to argue that steel is precious and compost is easy to make so I let him be, 100% efficiency won't keep a town alive during nighttime infertility or server population moving.
Before Donkey Town I had two common griefers playing at the same hours. Not that I always saw them, I just had more chance of bumping into them. After Donkey Town there was a polish pair of twins who usually started killing people - they were quiet but sometimes dropped in a word or two. Haven't seen them in a long time.
And yes I also remember a racist or two at Steam release, they have disappeared too.

I theorize that the Steam players are slowly leaving the noob phase and start to deflect criticism as they think they know better, having played tens of hours now. This shortens their fuse and they are quick to judge. Not all of them, but some of them, entering the "teenage phase" of a maturing player. "I do it my way, you are just a hater".
