It is a "survival game" with dangerous wildlife, resource collecting, and hunger mechanics, but the primary threat is other players.   And the main strategy is to get strong enough to steal from anyone who is too weak to defend what they have gathered.   Raiding solo players or small groups is much more lucrative than gathering everything yourself.  No defense is perfect and your base is always vulnerable to attack, so it is better to play offensively, rather than defensively.

Anyone who wants to build something like civilization in Rust will be deeply disappointed, because the meta is "might makes right" and "shoot first".   If you encounter another player and you are not on discord with them, you are better off putting a bullet in their head before they put one in your back.   Even if they are a naked new player asking for help.

Things are not that bad in OHOL yet.   But the war sword is pushing the meta in that direction.

Right. Sometimes I feel like Jason is running a social experiment.

If I understand Jason correctly, Jason doesn’t actually want constant genocide/murderfest. Rather, he wants to see this hypothetical moral ideal of players coming together and getting along with outsiders despite the obvious risks. He *wants* the good guys to beat the bad guys, and somehow it feels like he’s confident that the good side of humanity will triumph despite all the swords and languages and violent temptations.

Tbh I’m not confident at all about that.

I don’t think it’s a given that the “good guys” will prevail, and this social experiment of OHOL might utterly fail and only show off the worst of us — kind of like what you get in Rust and other pvp ganking games.

And I think part of the reason an experiment like this might fail is that I don’t believe that the world is an inherently peaceful/“good” place. Obviously, a person’s worldview reflects their personal philosohies, but history has shown us time upon time again the ugliest parts of human nature — whether it is genocide, nazi/fascism, lynching/racism, gang violence, Somalia, Sudan, Boko Haram, and all the more frightening parts of the world that makes one realize how fragile and delicate of a bubble that we live in, if you grew up somewhere safe.

And then there’s the question of what kind of game Jason wants OHOL to be.

I really dislike the “because it’s realisitic!” argument for why war/violence should be in OHOL. Rape, slavery, and other forms of abuse are also realistic, but I doubt anyone would like to see that added to the game (except for the most disgusting griefers) solely on the basis that “it’s realistic”.

Yet in spite of slavery, rape, wars and murder our world has turned out for the better (?) Overall? It still sucks in many parts but we have done it.

My only concern in game is that a life is just not valuable enough even in the best of towns. And honestly, there is no fix to this.

I have never been cursed AFAIK and I have made a good share of blades or things that require blade blanks, either you land in one of those families where toxic players somehow converged or your protecting the queen is actually seen as griefing

You're still banned from the area. Your ban is based off where you are born and not where you die. Of course this means you can always get around bans by just having someone walk outside of town but that's a bit of a hassle for both parties.

Oh I see, so the more settlements a family has (fireplaces and nurseries far from each other) the family can get reincarnations?

Guys.. just stop. There's no good way to twist this. We already have full blown racism, if you put any form of slavery in the game you'll kill it. Realism aside, you have to draw the line somewhere and it is here.

Pretty much this.

If the game has reached the point where enslaving other races sounds like a good idea, you know there's something very wrong with the current meta.

Swords is what's wrong. Lucky he nerfed it but it's still a great tool for the psycho griefer.

Obviously Jason is aiming for the realist vision when he puts us all together so close and introduce something so inflammatory and stir paranoia.

Maybe the slave should understand WHY everyone is so fearful of them in-game. I can totally understand why I would be arrested if I were to waltz into a foreign camp.

Slavery is likely temporary anyway if a mechanic to allow swords being useless after marriage happens

Of course, all this can be solved if swords are removed outright anyway. No need for convolution like this , but seems like Jason is not going to remove swords so let's have a less lethal sword, so at least eves, innocent ones, have a fair shot of integrating into another family.

Quit being such idealists people, if you were a tribe member in a stone age would you welcome a random with open arms but you KNOW theres a 1 percent chance each member of their family will murder your children for fun? Get real!

PS: inb4 people who would actually not allow you to marry and remain a slave. Welp, I think most of you on these board seems would want to marry and liberate slaves anyway, so no worries. Shackles are basically nonlethal swords, and that's a good thing. Do you REALLY enjoy the kill eve on sight meta now?

Can Steam players actually use this mod? I'm from steam. If not, then it may as well be enforced that 2x zoom is standard.

If we all were starting from square 1 we would be a lot more helpful to each other and promote learning/teaching, increasing retention rate. I was lucky to have started around the temp update where people had to start to figure things out all over again.

Alternatively lower the damn difficulty curve. It's asinine, try watching someone who's never played - even after a dozen lives they are barley catching on on how to be useful. I would compare it to Binding of Isaac (popular hardcore indie game) but without the fast paced action which drive you to learn and keep playing.
The tutorial needs to be mandatory after teaching you basic controls and how to make a fire (which let's be honest, you'll maybe do one every few lives unless you force eve spawn). The craft system could be a lot more accessible in-game too.

+1

More tutorials please

Victim blaming now too eh? Wow.

I think ya'll need to step back and not just blame the recent updates. You need to remember what it's like to be a new player and barely able to keep yourself alive in the berry field. I actually let a friend play once because he was interested after watching me play, and even with me telling him exactly what to do he still struggled. And then he got scolded by some villager for being lazy and only eating/tending to berries. He couldn't even feel accomplished for learning how to do that in the first place (imo supposed to be the first job you learn and understand the system).
Mind you, I have countless hours and know most recipes/builds and I was holding his hand through the entire game just to help keep him alive, and it was still a very frustrating experience for him. Most new players don't have the advantage of someone sitting beside them explaining the social norms and mechanics.
Even I have gotten yelled at for talking and 'standing around not working'. It's not just edge cases, god forbid I want to RP and have some fun without being accused of being Diogenes.

Do your part and help people learn, even if they don't ask - offer. Don't be toxic shits scolding people for 'not playing right'. The learning curve in this game is asinine, and it gets steeper with every update.

When playing OHOL is like a doctor internship in a federal hospital you know the culture is totally wrong

So much for parenting concept that so many players are pushing for

EXACTLY. Either you eat an arrow, be shackled but vie for freedom someday (so much like our history) , or run wild ,be free, and never comeback

Sounds interesting, Slave uprisings sounds like fun.

It is common for Eves to try and live in or steal from towns. They offer better living conditions then living in the wild. Your lineage may do better as slaves to a big city with the possibility of gaining freedom down the line.

It is possible that one could be set free peacefully once trusted by the town.

I have been suggesting marriages , if anyone in the family deems them acceptable for marriage, make them in laws and they can not sword each other anymore. Then shackles can be released , and everyone lives happily ever after ? Maybe, but there will always be bitter people after being shackled, but they don't realize the burden of trusting a potentially game ruining eve and her descendents

Struggle continues, what fun lol

What stops said griefer from running up and shackling you with one sitting around? What stops them from wandering into a new town with multiple shackles and start slapping them on whoever they can get close to. I'd rather be stabbed. Also if you are force fed you can't die, and are at this point an actual prisoner. I think this happened in Ark, players would get captured and log off, only to log on hours later and find that they had been fed and are still trapped against their will. Murder with bows and knives works in the game because it removes them and bans them, and makes it clear who did the act because of slowdown and inability to drop the weapon immediately.

Wow, if a village can't catch the foreign eve trying to put on a shackle one by one on your entire family nothing can protect you from basically anything

Basically make any adult from same family can unshackle you. I say adult so then a child has to be shackled before they reach adulthood or they can have the option of liberating their family

And you can't shackle own family. Like a less lethal sword, that has wounds that doesn't require a pad to heal

Also if you are an actual prisoner nothing stops you from continuously running to commit suicide.

Nothing wrong with that, not every multiplayer game needs to have conflicts baked into them. Having to struggle against the elements AND other players creates a helluva environment thats for sure.

Nothing wrong with that indeed, tell that to the griefers and the inevitable assholes

I say adding shackles is a great way to curb eves griefing if the spawn distance isn't changed. Griefers will be unable do their shit, decent players can very much still play the game mostly normal. I suggested a slowdown so that they can't do the stash away stuff type of griefing easily but I guess being on a shackle should be enough of a red light for people to keep an eye on them.

Not only is it toxic, but it has the potential to be bad for PR.

There’s tons of products that have been destroyed by bad publicity, so I would absolutely not call this a good idea for a game that currently markets itself as a “parenting” game.

Yes, given a choice no players would want to live a slave life. I never said this would be good for game PR. It would be hyper real though.

Back to the same problem, people can choose to just quit the game back to their freedom anytime. Can't say the same for slaves back then , you live a slave or you die
Dying in this game simply has no real conseuqence

Also this boils back down to Jason, what IS his vision? Human history Realism? Or lovey dovey parenting all the way where everyone on server eventually sings Kumbayah together

Human nature though dictates that the latter is probably impossible

This would inevitably breed a lot of toxicity and would take an even larger step towards opposition. Player confinement and control might sound fun on paper or over a 5 minute conversation, but not as game mechanic that would or could get used too often.

I agree to an extent, my idea is to just mimickhistory of slavery of perceived inferior races. It's toxic, no questions about it, but one does not deny it happened.

some people will get butt hurt, but if they play a game based on human civilization from the stone age and gets triggered for being shackled and enslaved by a foreign tribe, they might be the one to blame

I find it fascinating, even if I do end up being the receiving end of the shackles, call me a masochist, whatever

This community is toxic. I'm a new player, sort of. I actually ended up watching a lot of videos on this game for some reason which then got me interested. I started watching more and eventually bought the game to try out. I immediately loved it. I sucked, but I liked it. I kept getting a lot better. I have a very quick learning curve and adapt really well to games that I get involved in. This was the case for this game.

Cut about three weeks into the game where I feel it has stagnated a bit and there are several griefers and communities way too close together. I join a family after that is in a gated town. I can't leave it, but that's fine, I make the best of my situation. I realize that there are many clay pots empty without any stew ingredients but plenty to harvest so I begin getting everything ready and go to town. I get 5 raw stew pots ready and several more ready just needing the pots and water. However, I can't grow any more crops because I need a skewer to till the soil. I simply go to the middle of the town and ask if there are any skewers, and immediately someone tells me to go find some (I can't leave and there are none within the gates) and that I'm a lazy fuck. Other people then jump on an tell me to fuck off and die and that I need to work harder (I had been working non stop to get the stews ready). The guy completely berates me, tells me to play a game more adequate to my IQ level, they all tell me to start Apex Legends and cry (I have no idea what this means), and eventually I just get surrounded and killed by people hating me (despite being my immediate family) because I simply asked if anyone knew where any skewers were.

Fuck this game - fuck this community. It's so small, yet there is a huge percentage of total elitist assholes. Not gonna miss it, peace!

(Edit; this wasn't the first occurrence, toxicity has been rampant lately in games I spawn into for simply asking where things are to help me help the family)

Yikes, that is horrible. I can't say I ever ran into this kind of family. I can say that though at least half the families I have been in will make an effort to help you out and the other half will just nonchalantly say sorry can't help you or something along those lines. I have yet to be berated

Been playing for 3 weeks by the way, I don't consider myself a very fast or skilled player - generally a big klutz actually. I think many games communities are way worse

Towns can control what rights they have. Could be that are just second class citizens or locked in a pen.

Aye that would be me. But this is not going to sit well with the pokitically correct.

Babies are only banned if they /die and if you're far enough from town it doesn't matter anyways since they'll be banned out of the middle of the wilderness which still opens them up to be born to town. Being male is basically for if you don't like raising kids or you have a dilemma about ditching babies in the wilderness/tossing them on the town fire.

If you're experienced as a player there's almost no reason to play male as the ability to have children is a greater upside since you can play male-lite by just never tending to children. The only time it's beneficial to play male is when the female population is too high as otherwise you'll boom//bust your population in an hour from 20 people from the server to like 5.

Ow shit, there's no family ban for dying in that manner? Still I think a lot babies /die when they are plopped off a running horse right? Or is it courtesy then not to and wait for starvation?

Griefers came in but easily dealt with. Peace reigns again.

#373 Re: Main Forum » In your opinion, what is the weakest aspect of the game? » 2019-05-26 02:49:39

Character customization. Everyone feels and looks the same.

A random face generator
Slight random variation in adult height
Different level of 'meatiness' in the limbs

Also, please make cloth a good bit easier to make

#374 Re: Main Forum » What if you stayed with one family until that family died out? » 2019-05-26 02:38:17

If we can respawn in same family repeatedly, there's no point in dying. It is precisely because we can die we feel the urgency to accomplish things efficiently. What you are suggesting is giving everyone basically immortality.

And if you have read stories, mythologies and legends , you would know immortals are douchebags, eventually

#375 Re: Main Forum » More character models would help us bond with our family » 2019-05-26 02:36:07

Many people have suggested this before. I very much agree, family members looking alike discourages bonding. It doesn't have to be very difficult and make entirely new models. A random face generator i bet can be programmed in i bet.

Also maybe a way to add a mole randomly on the face. Beauty marks are hot. And very distinctive
