i was thinking about the easiest way to teach newbies. i think if they managed to get a basket and started following mom around they would learn enough to stay alive (like digging up carrots for food), but only if the mom is not a newbie as well. if they helped out carrying things mom couldnt then itd be a useful way of spending your time as a newbie while reducing the chances of dying immediately after mom leaves
steps to take as mom:
1. ask "are you new?"
2. make bb basket n put 1 non perishable food in it (like an onion)
3. tell bb to follow n learn and carry things when needed
steps to take as bb:
1. if mom didnt make you a basket get a sharp rock by sharpening a round stone on a big hard rock
2. use sharp rock to cut down two reeds and combine them to make basket
3. if no reeds then cut down two wheat, use a curved branch or maple branch from a tree to hit wheat. use the remaining straw and combine together to make basket
4. put food in it and follow mom around to learn
obviously this is for people who are very very very new who spawn to eves. but it could also work for newbies who spawned in town. follow around mom (as long as shes not a hunter) and watch what she does with a basket with food in hand. basically just pick someone and learn that one thing that they do.
it feels kinda like a waste of time cos u could both be doing shit but new babies always seem to die in the first 4-6 years anyways. might as well give them a boost
all you really need to succeed at this game is this link: https://kazetsukai.github.io/onetech/ and basic knowledge of how to feed urself n rationing out materials n food. its a super fun game! give it a go
perhaps i wasnt clear. i meant making ponds in order to put a well on top of it so we can be near wild food sources but also have a water source conveniently placed. and i meant "balanced" as in "ppl cant dig a million ponds wherever they want b/c the pond creation would be limited based on the amount of rocks and tools available. itll have to be later in the civ's life b/c it requires a shovel, stake, bucket, etc etc. there needs to be a way to put a source of water in middle of a town besides building a civ next to 5 oddly placed ponds
what if we could dig up dirt (like the way we would dig a pit), line it with stones, and then fill it with water? (lets say two buckets for difficulty). this would solve the complains ppl have about not being able to build wells wherever they want while keeping it balanced

i saw pretty much everyone starved after i died. why?? there was so much food... what the hell happened?
with the 3 hour ban ppl feel the need to raise as many (or at least as many female) babies as possible, just in case they will all die and u will not get anymore babies. if there was a way to control pregnancy these baby booms would not occur while still keeping the benefits of the lineage ban. as it is now, second or third daughters of a line just pop out and keep all the babies, leading to mass starvation. please jason, consider birth control
ive been mulling over this and maybe ive been consuming too much food? is suiciding right after menopause a better idea than living to 50 n helping?
my problem: last 9324790370375 lives as eve/eves only living daughter has led up to all of my kids dying at ages 4-11 and me alone at my farm filled with carrots with no kids at 60
what i do already:
- i tour around the children that seem most helpful and intelligent
- i tell the kids where food is ("go left for food!")
- i warn kids of dangers ("theres a snake to the right. watch out!")
- make most kids baskets and put at least one food in it
- tell the newbs how to do simple things like make sharp stone
- ask if they are good or not before leaving them
why are you all dying? how can i make this childhood experience more survivable for you? what do YOU want from your eve mom as a baby?
i hope to jason thats a feature and not a bug
If it were any harder, I'd love the challenge that much more; were it easier, I might just say a few more words each life to my family, and maybe get to know some of you for the real people you are, but there is plenty of time for that in lives yet to come. In this hour, this life, we have to make every action matter most, for all those who've yet to come.
you are the light of my life morti
'Experinced' players are going to get really triggered by the fact that you enjoy roleplaying, lmao.
theyre gonna have to accept that some ppl have mommy/daddy issues that this game only amplifies ![]()
theres a lot of threads in this forum about how ohol sucks now b/c of this and that change and that all the newbs suck and they should read all the manuals before proceeding etc etc so this is to get a lil break from that negativity.
heres a list of what makes ohol fun for me:
-roleplay. i love raising children and pouring all my heart and resources into them to be shot later (i mean it! i think being murdered is funny) it feels like a collaborative effort in writing a short backstory for our "characters". i love being adopted by my aunt and calling her mom instead. or helping out my abandoned brothers and building a bond with them. or marrying a dude cos he had one shoe on and i had the other
-positive reinforcement. dying surrounded by your children who all say "ily" is THE BEST. i always tell my kids ily and when it pays off its really the greatest feeling. this is basically my #1 motivation in playing this game. i love helping people out and seeing my civ grow is very fulfilling
-helping new players. i love being able to teach someone new the ropes. whenever i see a new player succeed (even with something small like making a rope or sharp rock) it makes me very happy. helping them live to old age is also a great feeling
feel free to add on with what makes you keep returning to ohol

tried finding everyones bones. sorry rad i couldnt find u ![]()
tbh u probs dont want babies that dont wanna be helpful anyways. its better to die alone with no kids than have a kid who wanted to be born at a town wreck ur whole shit up cos theyre bored
its because of the combination of a rush of new players entering the game along with the difficulty increasing. i often end up in eve settlements (2 or 3 generations down) with a bunch of new players so if i stop to explain the mechanics of baking pies or whatnot itll probably end up with
1. all the carrots being picked with NO seeds
2. running out of food
3. starving
along with just gathering basic material to move onto the next branch its just a huuuge hassle to explain everything. especially when new players dont ask for assistance. not really much we can do at this point except hope that theyll pick things up one at a time like we did.
OR that they find this handy link https://kazetsukai.github.io/onetech/ that shows how to make everything ![]()

raley you tried to protect the seeding row. i saw you died right after i did and that saddened me but i hope you were able to protect the carrots in your next life. im most proud of you dear boy
i found emerald! i was nearly dead of old age when i headed out to a nearby camp i found a while back when i got lost in my youth. there i found my niece emerald! she had gotten lost as well. i told her to follow me to home but when i turned around she had disappeared. i was alone at the camp and was at about 6 hunger so i decided to leave a trail for her to follow. i took all the stuff at the abandoned camp and started making a trail south (and left my last words as "go south em" just in case she didnt get the point). i was about to just die at 5 hunger when em came back! i managed to lead her home just in time to die by the pies. i hope she does well
its a lot better to be a dude and not have to think about procreating tbh. u get a lot more time to start and finish projects (especially as a hunter) without being expected to feed and raise children. i enjoy being a dude 99% of the time (the 1% is when im the last person alive)
Okay, I think this has been fixed now.
Sorry for the trouble!
thanks jason!

the ghost of the boots family killed red horse apparently
I'm seeing this, too, in a different family: http://lineage.onehouronelife.com/serve … l_id=99390
oh thats wild....... i was also born into the horse family right before being born into the knight family. wonder whats going on...
i died seconds ago n looked up my family tree. the furthest we got in our secluded lil camp was three generations from eve. but somehow a 10th generation shows up in the tree. shes a baby from the 10th generation of the boots family from 10 days ago and we are listed as "distant relatives" but we dont even share a last name. its weird
ive been thinking about this userbase and how ppl are so quick to get mad at one another. i think a lot of that has to do w/ ppl who dont read the forums or discord and dont know about the changes at launch, as well as players who expect everyone else to know abt the changes. i think a quick solution is to have a update notification at launch
ex. worms no longer being used to compost could've had a notification like
"hi guys, jason here. i made a cool new update- instead of adding worms to the compost pile you now need to use sheep dung. have fun gathering sheep! until next week~"
something quick like that would save a lot of people from being shot for accidentally breaking a rule that didnt exist before the update. it also gives a hint for what the player should do next without giving away all of it
this is most important for people who dont speak english. i know theres a section of the userbase that dont speak english well, especially the internet slang we use in game. if they had a small notification in the beginning they could at least have the opportunity to look up a google translated version of that message to get the gist
(i know some of u r gonna b like "oh then they should just speak english"- thats just unrealistic. this is to save you from headache as much as the other players.
others will probably be like "then they should read forums" - also unrealistic. some ppl just wanna play a cool game n dont care abt the meta)
