was thinking abt this n not so sure about how it would work (or if it would work) but what if there was a max amount of lineages in one server so there isnt a drastic cut in population?
idk how it would interact with lineage bans (so forget lineage bans for a sec) but if there were say 500 people playing at a time n a server was capped at 100 ppl in 5 lineages at the most so other servers could be better populated n the fertility problem would be a lil more regulated... ofc the numbers im giving is probably not gonna work but its just an example of how im thinking it could work
if someone with math skills reads this do u think having a limited number of lineages in a game could help solve the problem in some way?
in regards to your original comment about early civs i honestly think the eve set up is pretty easy and i find it more fun than town playthroughs... i like trying to find the best spot for a town n trying to beat my lineage record. ive also had lives with religious grandmas at 3 gens down the line but that was a lil while ago i suppose (all hail the rabbit gods) and it tends to be the newer players who like to rp in early civs
so i dont think its the early game mechanics thats the problem.... its the distribution of kids. maybe some effort should be made in distributing kids with more or less hours in the game a lil more evenly throughout lineages cos it really just feels like a roulette. idk how that would work tho, maybe players with less than hours in the game would get higher priority in being born into a lineage thats 5+ generations in? while still controlling for the amount of ppl born to longer lineages?
not sure how programming works but i dont think changing the early game mechanics is the way to go on this problem
im not one to give a shit abt game purity or whatever n if i could work up enough effort to actually understand how to install the mod i would do it in a heartbeat. im just an illiterate piece of shit so i live without it
honestly if u play a lil more u would prolly agree that the immersion of ohol as intended by jason is only fun on its own for a couple of lives n then its up to u as the player to decide how u want to play
cos if u live ur life like the trailer suggests - rping a family n passing along tips to newbs n always working towards something for the civ - for ur entire gaming experience u would be bored out of ur mind. unless u do some whacky rp like some ppl on the forums do
the zoom out mod is useful if u want to become as efficient as possible n extend ur lives as long as u want them to be. it gives u more control as the player, rather than the character n this choice is completely up to u n whatever u choose is fucking valid. but tbh id install the mod cos fuck snakes
what if u could whisper to someone so nobody but ur whisper target could see what ur saying
im envisioning a mechanic in which if two or more ppl stand on the same tile they can w/ [speech] to each other. but if somebody else walks into the same tile they'd also be able to see what the whisperers are saying
if this volume idea could be extended into a shout (s/ [speech]) which produces a speech bubble that goes beyond a screen, maybe 2 or 3 screens but decreases in size the further someone is. that would be pretty cool
it would have a lot of use, especially shouting if ur out hunting with someone n ur lost. or if ur planning to kill a sponge. ofc griefers can use it too but i think the benefits would outweigh the cons considering the fact griefers can also just use discord or whatever to talk to each other outside of game
!!!!!!!!!! does anyone kno if we can put lassos into baskets or bps?? from what i remember we cant but if we could, trips out for ropes will be so much more convenient...
updated for December 7th, 2018
havent played in a bit so not 100% if
InSpaces sheep pen: https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=729
is actually outdated but i think pein's pens v 3.0 is the easiest one to make anyways
i went back about 10 pages but no more than that so there mightve been a few that i missed. feel free to drop them below. also pls lmk if the guides are outdated!
apparently ive had this account since april but i dont think ive done a lot tbh
i usually dont do much building tbh... ive helped ppl complete pens in the past and ive attempted (broken) pens before. started some roads too but never 100%ed any projects tbh
i havent dyed anything either, or any of the new shit cos no time (goddamn finals are literally murdering me i have 3 10+ page essays due by monday n im on here rn)
i guess its cos i usually play eve runs so i never get to that stage... and even when im born in a town its either dying from a food shortage or theres a murderer on the loose ![]()
id like to go on a serial killer run one day tho... see how long i last. probably gonna wait till im in a big city or something n only target males (not 100% asshole lol)
lol history repeats itself i guess
we did this a while back n wow..... the amount of incapable guards who hoard the weapons and just sponge off other ppl while harassing innocents was honestly more annoying than griefers
this kind of system only lasts 3 generations at the most and usually breaks down on gen 2 cos the previous "sheriff" gives away their weapons to some noob who dies of starvation in a farm/gets murdered at age 23 or to a murderer in the making
its better to have knives spread out amongst the common folk than relegating murder duties to one person who can easily take advantage of it
firebow drill is outdated my dude u can just chop off the flint tip
ive seen ppl eat/feed ppl all the food n then just stand in middle of town with a basket of the only food... now thats true evil ![]()
its annoying when u need a rope for sheep n some idiot (usually me tbh im sorry) accidentally makes a lasso out of the two ropes cos they forget ropes cant stack.... also real easy to grief
The way it works is that when you die of old age as an eve it "stores your camp". The server actually writes out a message that the camp has been stored, where the location is and what the radius of the camp is. When the next eve spawns it checks to see if a camp has been stored, and if it has, then you spawn somewhere in the radius of that camp. Or at least that's what it used to do (unless I got something wrong). I haven't verified that it works in the current version because I keep dying at 58 or 59 years old (it's been a *long* time since I played). I have no reason to believe that the functionality was removed and Alec's description matches my recollection exactly.
It's very handy for people like me that like to run on a private server and play solo mode. If you die to anything except old age you have to start again. If you die of old age, you can continue your site. There is actually a configuration setting for the minimum age that the eve camp will be saved. By default it is 60. I've tried setting it to other values (like 40) and while the camp appears to be saved, I never respawn near it. I haven't bothered to debug it to figure out why.
tysm!
You should update the wiki then.
I don't know why living to 60 as eve to respawn as eve in the same place is a thing?, seems contradictory to the rest of the game which doesn't let you select where to be born and prevents you with lineage bans from being born in the same place repeatedly.
It's been confirmed before and confirmed again here by the source code Alec just linked @startafight. It just isn't totally consistent b/c of the weird aforementioned calculation that is done.
my b i didnt fully explain my thinking... i meant like the exact way its supposed to work hasnt really been explained... n idk shit abt source codes man so like if its not in laymans term idk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
id actually like a full explanation of what its supposed to do myself usually all ppl say is that eves spawn back where their spawn point is set (fuck its late im forgetting the term for the stick thing whatever) but an explanation of x amount of ppl in a server or the possibility of being born back as an eve to ur old spot or when its erased or whatnot would be nice... i still havent fully understood it yet cos i havent looked at numbers since like 8th grade
yeah... this "live to 60 to be reborn at the same spot" thing hasnt actually been confirmed to my knowledge on the forums. i dont know if it was an old rumor or whatever but when its brought up people tend to say its true but i dont think jason himself has actually said anything about it (on the forums that i know of)
what if we could use long branches or skewers as safe knives and practice dueling? like whoever draws first (clicks on the other person first) knocks the stick out of the other persons hands? i love the idea of games in a game n ive seen dice around n such but i havent actually had the time to play with em... also idk any card games so not sure how it would work ![]()
also what if we could freeze ice biomes by pouring water on the ground? make a frozen lake (which can turn normal again in like 30 mins idk) u can slide on n play hockey with penguins as pucks :0
happy birthday jason!!
a part of the game is knowing when to raise n when to abandon ur kids. even tho the automatic mindset is to raise all ur kids, if u go down that route u will lead very quickly to famine in small camps, and wasted resources n chaos in bigger towns. i normally dont even bother raising kids in cities b/c theyre so likely to be picked up by another female (usually i just name em n drop em in a baby pile).
ofc this isnt very helpful for helping new players learn but u cant teach every single new player, u should try to stick to teaching one player about the specifics of a certain job. if they really wanna learn theyll ask for help. a bit back i had a guy who just followed me around to learn about shepherding n i seldom spoke to him, but he would learn the basics by watching n try it out for himself. when i saw him struggle (not full berry bowl) i gave him a lil help but he figured it out mostly on his own
before the steam launch things had calmed down quite a bit on the new player front n u could afford to be picky about whether or not u raise certain children (i would normally limit myself to 3 in an eve camp - 2 smart girls n 1 boy), but with the steam launch there r probably more new players than experienced ones. ive only played a couple of times since the launch n i gotta say - if ur playing eve keep track of ur girls n generally keep at least 3 around at a time (they usually die off pretty quick). with boys i usually keep around 2 - they dont reproduce so u dont gotta worry about keeping future population booms in mind, but they do take up quite a few resources
when it comes to raising kids i generally plop em on a warm spot n just go do my thing, when they grow hair i tell em where food is (or lead the way if im particularly worried) n leave them to their own devices. u dont gotta feed em too often either - this is a mistake i often see new mothers doing, theyll just repeatedly pick up n feed the kids n waste their own hunger bar n die of starvation (every time u pick up a baby u lose a hunger bar).
so raising the kids isnt really the hard part, its knowing when to keep n when to abandon them that takes a bit of practice. just ignore em till they grow hair n then give em a job to do (if they dont do it w/e theyll prolly die off soon enough anyway). tho i suppose from ur post u prolly wanna keep em all alive... i discourage that heavily. itll take up way too much of ur time and they prolly wont live that long to pay off ur efforts anyways
the only kind of griefing that honestly bothers me off are senseless ones. if theres some drama behind it like "that dude killed my dad!!" its all fun and games (ive even got a few posts up here about how i helped a few murderers for the rp). but if someone just decides to destroy an entire city for no reason other than "its just how i like to play" theres no fun in that. or if its an eve camp that barely has anything anyways but the people are doing their best to work together.
ive always been down for fun murder that can be fought back against, but when its impossible thats when things get frustrating.
think of it like this: usually camping is looked down on in fps games. same for just bullying noobs that dont know how to fight back. its the same concept - when people start repeatedly picking on others that cant fight back its not fun, its annoying.
it makes the game less enjoyable for people who are working on things b/c they've probably put in 30~40 minutes of their day (a significant chunk for those with lives) into whatever they were doing for it all to be broken down by some asshole in 2 minutes.
Early food game options that extend over into late game. Hoping new players aren't all raised to be berry farmers otherwise all the cities are going to fail due to massive water drain from bushes.

thanks tarr! added the two.
updated the guide
wasnt really outdated, as any wall functions the same as pits in blocking movement and i didnt only talk about pits
also you left the old one there and a new one as outdatedi would like it to have the original guide title there, cause 'swapping items'' is far from ''better interface'', in case of 'mom wut do'' i accept renaming but normal guides got good enough names most of times
you can find all my guides under the name of ''Mini Guide'' on forum search or most of them on google
https://www.google.com/search?q=site:on … mini+guide
ok i just ended up making a new section for pens since it was getting pretty crowded. n i changed the name ^^
edit: also ty everyone for using it. I'm glad compiling this was helpful! (since I did spend at least 4 hours in total making n digging through old guides it woulda been sad if nobody found it helpful)
OMG! You were my dad!
hi son! were you daring? sorry i couldnt save you. killed ur mom tho
...
that makes a lot of sense! a few of the pages had repeat stories on them but many ppl followed ur rules. or just didnt have anything interesting to write i guess. its nice that u got help in the end tho ![]()
its been a while since ive played and honestly, i expected it to be a shit show. but this life really proved to me why i loved ohol so much.
i was born into a small farm to a mother who named me blue and amused myself as an infant by smiling up at her. grandma saw me and said it was very cute and gave me her clothes before she passed. the farm life was mundane and i thought not a lot had changed about ohol in the past month.
however, things changed when the bear attacked. as soon as i saw the mauled figure of two of my cousins i took off on the road that led out of the farm. the road seemed to stretch on for miles and it led me to a massive town overrun with children of varying ages.

there was a girl that had maybe just hit 12 holding a boy at knifepoint, my unnamed younger brother. he stood over a corpse with blood on his knife.
as soon as he saw me he cried "feed me!"
but i merely called out, "you are creed" as he bled out.
i left the situation to diffuse as i continued to hunt for arrows. gathering the three needed i rushed back to the farm, following a cousin who held a bow. together we tracked down the bear and slew it.
peace returned for a while and i returned to the town. the murders had quietened the place but there was more to this town than the people, there were pages. all scattered across the town were pages and pages. a princess who had repopulated, an eve that had found the place, someone who spent an entire life getting to the village. it was as i read the words "books in the upper left box" i realized what i had stumbled across. it was a library.
when i last played ohol paper was merely a murder weapon, maybe a joke to pass to the next individual. but these pages spelled out a legacy.
as i explored further i found things i had never seen before. a grand mango orchard stood next to the smithy, and above were stacks of paper.

and it was then when i remembered that it was this idea of a legacy that initially drew me to this game. i tried to piece together when eve tarr had arrived to this town, and why we had inherited "dragon" instead. there was another family in the village with us that also had the last name "dragon" and i assumed one of my ancestors had adopted them, or maybe they had adopted us. nonetheless, we had merged into one family.
there was something grand about this life, despite all the murders. maybe it was the taste of a new fruit that grabbed my attention, or maybe it was the pages that explained our ancestors lives in a decrepit library. either way, it was fun being able to enjoy a full life again.
ps. hey mom- thanks for the hat
the day we can wipe our ass in game is the day that jason will have delivered on his promises

Might as well bump this, because it would become quite life saving for those who are still new. Also i remember seeing the server list guide somewhere in forums, but I haven't found it yet. Might as well add it up so that someone can practice with a friend or two alone in empty server.
ty I added the server list. not sure if its the one u were thinking of but better than nothing
They aren't pein's sheep gates, I invented them a month earlier than his first guide.
