Experienced a disconnect and got logged out as the game could not reconnect. I logged back in, without having to restart client and started a new life. Just over an hour later I look at the family tree and see that it says I am still living in the game I disconnected from? I found this out by searching the name of one of my children. Could this possibly be because of the changes to the insta death mod now disconnecting instead of killing you? I didnt actually use that command but can't think of any other reason for this.

Might be useful to mention that when I opened the family tree through game client I noticed there were two game clients running. This was not done manually by me.

Was in an eve village that started making a farm kiln etc with no water in sight! Once I had hair I grabbed a basket and ran lol

I just had, hands down, the most positive experience in this game to date. Let me tell the tale of the Kime family's beginnings.

I was born Samson Kime to what I assume was a pretty new eve. She was sitting in a wee berry patch raising my siblings and eventually asked for fire. Upon inspection I realised there were no straight branches, the grassland was very small. My brother, Logan and I suggested we move so off we went, me, Mom, Logan and our baby brother who was not named at the time (I later named him Awesome). Logan and I carried baskets with a sharpstone and food. We made a treacherous journey through the jungle, my dumbass even caught yellow fever at one point and my whole family stopped to help, fed me bananas and waited until I was well.

Along the way we came across a corpse with a tattered backpack among other clothes, this was a promising sign. So on we went Logan and I leading the way with zoom. Soon after little bro grew hair mom had another son, though forgot to name him too we all made it to water. We lost mom and baby bro at this point but I think it was Awesome went looking and led her back to us.

By now I was having children of my own. My first was a girl and soon after her birth Logan approached to say he had found the civilisation we had seen signs of. The whole family began to follow. Again we lost Mom, by the time we reached the village (it was deserted) so one of my brothers went looking for her. Sadly he never made it back, the family tree tells me he was killed by a rattle snake. But MOM DID, you could imagine my shock to see her return to us again. She died at 52 having raised four children who stuck together and cared for eachother the whole journey.

Once we found our home I began raising more children My first girl was named Hope, as we hoped to find a home, my second Lucky because in the end we did. From there my children cooporated spectacularly. A few of the newer ones asked me what to do and I gave direction where I could while trying to catch my bearings on what the village needed. We ran out of berries at one point but there was left over stew and a couple pies to sustain most while other alternatives were arraigned. My son Harvey made me especially proud, he was new and eager to help. I asked him to fetch some eggs after we used the villages last few (this was during the berry shortage) and he did. Then once the food situation stabilised I asked him to get some wheat seeds so we could make a start on pies, again he made me proud.

Once we were comfortable enough, with Logan and then my Grandson Jeremiah making some stew it was time to think about sheep. Awesome had fetched iron and agreed to lead someone to the sheep he saw while on request my daughter Kimmy made a pen. I died just after finishing a bow.

This was such a heart warming experience I tell you everyone chipped in and supported each other, we over came a few obstacles eventually coming out on top. I believe this is one of the best lessons this game can teach you, the beauty of working together to achieve a goal and sharing that glory.

If any of the Kime family read this please comment I want to thank you all.

#55 Re: Main Forum » Greifers pass me over, cus I don't know what's going on. » 2019-02-23 05:18:07

I just played on a town where someone killed all the sheep. People did freak a bit and she got a few curses, I was that suspicious player that instead of hunting her down focused on getting resources to restock the pen.

Of course the bow I made was stolen (hopefully by someone trying to help) being able to carry bown on ur body would be useful but that is more of an annoyance that anything and not quite relevant.

The really troubling part was when the bow and arrow was finally made a guy picked it up and then just walked around town, I tried asking him to hunt sheep and said he would need rope but guess is he was rather new. Someone capable did finally go to hunt once I asked. They had been using a horse cart to fetch items so could assume they were competent. Should also add I was in my fiftys so hunting myself could have lead to items getting lost

So the sheep problem was getting solved, great. This is when the greifer returned, she had been absent while the hunting issue was going down..she proceeded to stab a random dude and THIS is when I cursed her. The problem here is her name was Elizabeth Korell II. So many younger couldn't.

I would suggest trying to keep names to 4 or 5 letters Max so teenagers and sometimes even children (if name is jo ko or something) can curse too.

I agree that cries of greifer should be taken with a grain of salt until you see proof yourself and focus should be on fixing the issue they have created instead. Also tell people what you are doing and if someone says they are fixing it don't interfere. I announced that I would make a bow yet without a backpack the resources I gathered were constantly moved. Then several people tried to take the bow once it was complete. Not to mention we ended up with around seven ropes... Not so bad since they can be used but still, that was time taken away from other jobs.

On the topic of maps, I don't think doing it the minecraft way is gonna work well with OHOL. Just learn your camp's surroundings and deal with it. In the end no camp is permanent anyway (like 99% of camps don't survive a 24 hour period so who cares about making permanent maps for them).

This was more with the intention of marking useful biomes near by in the current state of the game, for iron runs and the like. Then as survivability increases and towns surpass the iron age function as ways to find other towns or even settlements that have broken off from the main town.

It was merely a suggestion to, in the future, add an extra way for players to communicate within the game using more than text chat or notes/signs. Not to mention it could give tech such as airplanes another way to be useful.

Haha maybe I just don't need to use the bathroom enough to be considered normal but I never need breaks within the max one hour of this game...

Yeah, I always run around in towns and look for things that were there minutes before.

It would be great if we could have tables. They could work like boxes, but with the ability to put filled bowls on them as well as small sized tools. Then we could use them either as food stations (a great way to show new players which bowls have edible foods) or as work stations. Items would still go missing, but experienced players would be able to notice in a glance that something was wrong and help keep the work station operative. Maybe the table could occupy two tiles, but have space for four items, thus help reduce the clutter in town as well. A stew work station for example could have a round stone, a flint, a plate, a bowl.

This is a great idea. Maybe have them only able to hold plates bowls and maybe baskets just to make sure they aren't too op. And to stop people from dumping random stuff on them.

easy to say when the 72 bakers cant keep up with the mutton i produce big_smile yeah, do compost, bring the meat to the kitchen which is strategically placed to a total random position where the eves kid smashed one adobe by accident, then don't even complain that we don't have plates cause a rabbit is more important than bringing back an empty plate, even tho you don't know how to make plates
or hijack the cart of clay and only make crocks cause fuck the person who went 200 tiles away to gather it

I feel you scattered plates are really frustrating, always internally facepalm when I see one in the wild, like dude that shit is multipurpose and really important.

On the flip side I've been making stew in some of the bigger towns I spawn in and every time I leave my station I return to my one  God damn plate gone. Massive pet peeve for sure.

I definitely agree with you. Had a game where a boy said he couldn't help the town because he was texting irl. He just stood in the nursery and ate the nurses stew. I mean come on that's absolutely intentionally being a menace, what is the fun in standing and eating, if you're not trying to piss people off?

I told him I'd 'deal' with him if he didn't stop so he tried pulling a knife on me. This lead to me running away and crafting a bow. After approaching him with it I did manage to talk him down and hopefully proved that many players won't tolerate his b.s. by the time I died of old age he was farming/role playing as my daughter's husband hmm so mission accomplished.

also if the baby isnt totally dumb, its a waste of time to take to berries, and say these are the berries, your kid is small not blind
so yeah, just ask if its new, i guess everyone wants a tour, is better than standing in place but is quite ineffective

i totally agree, if the kid has hair, still ahs 1.5 min to stay in your arm, you could give tour after hair and drop kid when you are hungry, they will get starving message at 4 and waste food anyway. if you drop them at 7-8 bar then they can eat bread or carrot too, this can be another job, nanny just needs to feed until they older, other lady give tour, guys could teach oen each.

I generally find a quick run around with mom helpful so I don't waste my time running around to see what is where and who's doing what. It prevents getting in people's way and helps you be productive sooner. The mother doesn't need to explain everything but a quick lap around town is useful.

#62 Re: Main Forum » Close but no cigar » 2019-02-21 23:18:24

Not sure if it was the intention to add mushrooms but it is widely believed that early human use of psychedelics was the birth of creativity. Traces of LSD and fossilized poppies were found near early tools in Africa and south America. Tobacco and alcohol aren't really the same.

In regards to legal restrictionsrestriction... yea red dead 2 has alcohol and cigs but is 18+. Though this game is pretty mature when you think about it, I don't really think jason intends for children to play. Only issue is the headache associated with getting age restrictions approved.

#63 Re: Main Forum » Education of the baby. "Child tours" » 2019-02-21 22:55:57

I try to give all of my children a tour but as Peremptive mentioned in times of crisis there isn't any time. This is why, if I am nanny, I repeat basic info (farm south, sheep north etc) and if not ask the current nanny to do so. This at least gives babies enough knowledge to get to where they need to be. Additionally having a baby appropriate food source close to the nursery is necessary. Towns designed with a berry farm two or more screens away are quite dangerous. Having a food runner dropping off popcorn or bowls of berries can help with this but I still think the farm itself should be close considering most children prefer to and probably should work there until they are a bit older.

#64 Re: Main Forum » The instant-suicide mod » 2019-02-21 22:45:13

i like the idea of prisons, as Jason has said it adds and air of drama which certainly makes larger towns more interesting. Obviously a few things do need to be added to optimise this such as clubs or some for of handcuffs. But for now being able to punish someone who uses the insta death mod it a start. Though a tad unfortunate for those who are older in game and just feel its time to move on.

For example I had a life where I lived to 40 then decided to die because the town was functioning well and believed I could be more help elsewhere. I don't like the idea of punishing players who use the command for reasons such as that.

But babies who run or use the command should be punished. If you /die in your mothers arms she can easily carry your bones away and has her birth timer reset. Definitely think if the mentioned changes are implemented (being able to /die on ground) you shouldn't leave any bones. Other than that this is a step in the right direction. Will make it easy to confirm that runners are griefers who just want to annoy mothers. there is no reason to run, sure you make bones right now, but if that is remedied there will be no cause for it.

#65 Re: Main Forum » I hijacked a temple and turned it into an omelette station » 2019-02-21 22:02:13

I was there with you big_smile your omelets definitely saved us thank you. Even went out to get some eggs because it was so useful. I was Dshawn and helped get the sheep going before moving on to smithing/baking. The population did dwindle in my old age but when I died we had one fertile female and three kids so hopefully they make it.

I think the color of pork and mutton should be different. Pink or red...

Could give it an orange or white streak to indicate the fat layer, or just make it a different shape.

Kids only speak with a couple of letters at a time. So talking to them needs to happen one on one, so you can read their messages. Since kids will starve a mom now if left outside, moms just drop them in nurseries where all kids look the same and their words get mangled. So kids can't say if they are noobs now. Before I would always ask if my kids were new. Now I don't have time time. What if they tell me they are, so what. To teach anything you have to actually be where the teaching happens. This is usually out in the cold, so kids can't make it there. You can't teach them even if they somehow manage to communicate what they want to learn, and you want to teach. Plus the only person talking to babies is the milkmaid, who is not their mom and often doesn't really care that much, plus she can't leave the nursery to show the kid stuff anyways.

hmm that wasn't exactly my point. I end up being the nurse quite often and will ask a baby if they are new on their first feed. That way I am holding them and can clearly see their answer. If they are I say where the farms are and ask them to start there and observe. It may take more time to learn but if you simply watch another player work you can usually figure it out, this is how I learnt most things I know now. This is a bit harder when it comes to more complicated things but that is probably the point where if making a newcomen pump for instance, your town should be somewhat comfortable giving players freedom to teach a bit more. The nurse really should care about all babies...if she doesn't its not the job for her. This is why I will often ask to take over because I want to help all babies, especially newbies, start off on the right foot.

Also clothes are so important now. If I am out working and see a discarded hat or am just getting older I will go put the items on a baby. More people should start doing this (many do which is great) give the babes a better chance at survival and lower their food tax on the town its a win-win.

But the line you quoted was in reference to my adult self asking other adults simple questions and receiving silence. You will not starve typing a four letter word, it's just lazy not to help and a detriment to the town because I end up wasting time and food looking for what I'm asking about.

#68 Re: Main Forum » Snow ball muderer » 2019-02-21 20:00:29

I have been hit with snowballs and lived, I think it may be a percent chance that it kills you, or based on temp, not entirely sure. Sanshuba is correct though, it's important to have an early method of protection. Once you manage to craft real weapons just block the snowbank off with snowmen. I also enjoy seeing the army of snowmen in towns now and then, gives me a wee laugh for some reason.

#69 Re: Main Forum » Everything makes me think about this game. » 2019-02-21 19:54:55

I'm in the same boat, also keep dreaming about it since I've been playing a lot more lately. It's amazing how this game indirectly teaches you real life values. I mean think about dark souls as a comparison (another game I quite enjoy) I don't really bring any of it into my real life (would be worried if anyone did) because it serves as more of an escape from real life. Dark souls is a unique experience, for those who wish to be carried off to new unexplored territory. Where as OHOL is a comment on humanity and our need to cooperate to achieve gargantuan tasks, the saying, 'Rome wasn't built in a day' or better, 'Rome wasn't built in an hour' seems very fitting here.

One thing i did find funny, is someone said, "this isn't a game i want to play when i'm relaxing after work" after the update.

it never was that to me. It's enjoyable and exhilarating, but this is a pretty frantic and stressful game, by it's nature, that's what makes it so rewarding. Still, it's plenty easy to have a pretty laid back life working as a baker or whatever.

Me, being me, I either focus on one thing to the detriment of seeing other problems in the community or run all over like a crazy person trying to solve all the problems but not doing enough to fix any of them.

Which are basically my two RL modes.

I've only been around for a few weeks but before the update i did have fun, a lot of it. The game was stressful already just by having such a steep learning curve, however i could still explore the game without being too harshly punished. It did also feel rewarding to learn something new or accomplish a step in new technology. Like building a sheep pen for the first time, or finishing an atmospheric chamber for a newcomen pump. Now i can only play about one life before getting too stressed out to keep playing. Its not really the update that gets me though. Its the endless problem of overpopulation that is ruining villages, which is a result of the biome nerfs. I just don't find it as fun anymore when i have to struggle against not just the game but the ever consuming hoard of reincarnating mouths with hands. I spent 8 hours writing some dudes resume for him because he was bad with computers so i could buy this game -- which was the first time a I ever wrote a resume -- bless him. I'm a really slow writer btw, I have to do a ton of editting. It was stressful for me but it doesn't even compare to trying to manage an overpopulated village, which is the only experience i get now from playing this game. If a village isn't overpopulated it will be in a few generations and boy does it crash. (edit: Eve runs for me are a bit pointless, i never find the things i need to start a village in time.)

I know some of you are probably sick of hearing me complain but I just want to have fun playing this amazing game. I like fun but this ain't it chief.

It is getting better, especially after the recent tweaks. Yesterday was the first time in a while I was able to get a decent amount of work done without getting baby diarrhoea. Lots of towns are surviving for longer and eve spawns are fewer and fewer. Rest assured people are adapting to the temperature change and your experience is likely to improve soon.

Honestly I understand your issues, the only reason I didn't mind the update was  my ability to survive. Can definitely see why newer players would get frustrated. But as I said it is improving, I even saw a few bell towers under construction and one functioning which hasn't happened in a few days... not to mention the murder, people are right back on that band wagon.

I do hope you regain your enjoyment for this game, we all should, at the very least, be having fun.

#72 Re: Main Forum » What is the strangest town you have ever found? » 2019-02-21 08:25:03

I lived a life in the Lucky family today. It was very low population for 20 something gen and knives everywhere. The moment I witnessed a murder I went around with a basket, apron and pack and filled them all up with knives equalling eight!!! Also saw about 3 bows with arrows on my travels. It was certainly an excessive amount of weapons. Earlier in that life I had read a note saying 'so much murder' yep... would agree with that.

I was born after all the killing, only saw that one. An old woman killing a young girl, I think she wanted to end the line but thankfully we still had one fertile female. Once I had all the knives I could carry I dropped the basket off to our baker whom I had chatted with and generally trusted, asked them to keep them safe (as a few are obviously useful) and ran away with the other five.

pretty sure my last words were 'I am police wee oo' was an interesting life for sure. I really need to learn to make locks.

#73 Re: Main Forum » The village almost starved because it was overrun with pork. » 2019-02-21 08:05:15

Pork should absolutely be buffed to also make bacon, who doesn't love bacon yikes I think it should be cooked like omelets on a flat rock and then, as suggested above, able to be cut and added to omelets to increase food count.

we already have notes which could set up the base for a map variant. I imagine you could have a slightly more complicated recipe (considering the usefulness) for a map, then an extra requirement like needing to travel with blank map in hand to effectively 'draw' it and load information. Then once it is completed have a mini map appear or arrows at the edge of the screen with biome names etc. something along those lines anyway, or even have a map unlock an in game zoom feature while held.

obviously this would be difficult to implement but I do believe it could be an interesting feature. Especially considering the real life history of map making being so important. It could open up the possibility of building kingdoms or empires with several towns and begin steps toward a trade feature.

#75 Re: Main Forum » Is the game really too brutal for new/casual players? » 2019-02-21 01:56:36

First, newbies need to let us know they are new, I'm more than happy to teach but can't when I don't know. Sometimes you can tell by seeing player repeatedly miss click or running in circles but this is less effective.

Second, people need to communicate more in general. I'm not what most would consider a pro but can do a lot of things with confidence. When I do ask for help locating items or resources or even how to make something I'm unsure of, most players are silent. I understand we cant stand around all day chatting but if I ask say, 'where is clay' a simple 'IDK' or 'south' etc would help a lot.

As a last little side note, just now I played in a medium town (had decent farms, smith, bakery, sheep and half built structures) I was bouncing around doing jobs that needed doing and ended up baking because out bakers were gone (for whatever reason) and we were getting low on food. As I was solo baking an elder and two adult females were standing there chatting/arguing roleplay style (over stealing children hmm). I left them for a minute or two but, eventually asked if they could help/go work. the two adult females pottered off (good yay) but the elder (not super old) started arguing with me over being a vet and making all the plates. I just asked her to chill out said I was only asking and continued on.

My point it this was really counter productive, vets/pros should be the optimal teachers but egotistical players like this who get defencive are influencing new players to do the same. idk I may have just let it get to me a little too much.

Moral of the story, be nice and teach.
