#751 Re: Main Forum » In Regard to New Players » 2018-08-31 13:31:20

Ok so I am sorta mixed with this. Yes, common decency and patience is great and everyone should aim for that but if anyone is expecting that in the internet, they are being very naive. I have encountered sensitive people in other online multiplayer games and time and again they go in, vulnerable as ever, hoping for the best, and risk their mood only to come back distraught and sad after getting into shitstorms of angry and negative people which will happen at some point no matter what. Yes, everyone should have fun time playing and have the right to enjoy themselves without fears BUT non-moderated multiplayers are the wild west of the web; anonymous people let loose, cause trouble, act carelessly... it's a bullet hell we go dancing in, voluntarily.

So as we say, "be kind", we should also say, "take care of yourself". Not everyone will be kind anyways so make sure you are prepared to save yourself from the situations and leave when you are being a target of bullying or negativity you can't handle. The power is yours; run away, respawn, practice playing by yourself or find players who are eager to teach you.

Anyways, I've mostly experienced great lives and taught and corrected some players who listened to me, and I've never killed a newbie. Part of this great overall experience comes from taking time to teach myself to play and gathering tips from videos and other players.

But yes for sure, some people need to chill, a game is not worth losing your temper over. But also, some people need to be able to save themselves when they end up in the fire of these exploding players.

It's just a game peeps. Both of the peeps. Newbs and pros. Chill and respawn.

#752 Re: Main Forum » Why do you play OHOL? » 2018-08-30 10:00:45

This is a fun thing to think about. I am a similar gamer as OP: I rarely find games I get super into, but when I do, I play for hundreds to thousands of hours very loyally. I have now played OHOL for 1 month (on/off due to life and OHOL having murder issues with updates)...

So let's see!

1. No life is the same. There is the element of uniqueness. Some tasks are the same but there are hues that differ each time. Identity, location, situations, people...
2. My actions matter and benefit others. There is the element of lasting impacts, big and small.
3. Experiences: there is the element of surprises. What goes down in the next life? I think this is related to gacha mechanics and slot machines: maybe next one is a "big win"? My new favorite life?
4. Social interaction. Bumping into other kind and fun players awakens my emotions and makes me attached to others. It's refreshing.

What got me to play were the questions "Who will I be? What will be my name? How will my life pan out? What kind of people will take care of me? What will I go through? Will I be someone's hero? How will I die?"
Same questions are keeping me playing.

I also feel that the experience is worth the time I invest as I have instant impact on other real people. Mundane tasks are connected to the indirect saving of others so others can continue their existence and experiences and possibly get to enjoy good moments and emotions and possibly connecting with another human.

I also suspect there are small dopamine rushes going on when doing tasks, simple and complex, and enjoying finishing a project you set for yourself. Crafting, hunting, creating etc.

TL:DR; my actions help others as well as me, behind a corner may be the best life ever and there are differences and surprises in my playthroughs due to the game being a multiplayer. Simple and complex tasks give dopamine rushes.

#753 Re: Main Forum » Idea: Eternal Flame » 2018-08-28 19:42:06

I'd like to have oil and coals and such to make really long-living torches. Short shafts with fabric and oil or something, and those would function as portable fires with some heat radiating off them (small flame if dying so people can prepare a new one or replenish the old one). It could demand a bit more to make but it would save wood for structures and such. Whatever use wood would get in the future (furniture, storage...?).

Sorry what? Slapping a homemarker and dying at 60 summons Eves? As in causes new Eve players to spawn in the location of the homemarker of a player who died of old age? Am I understanding you correctly here?

its some info i got from another post a while back but i think its still relevant. if u have a home marker set and u die of old age it has the possibility of summoning an eve. thats why u get eve spawns in big cities so frequently

I think it only works for your own Eve spawns, so Eves spawn to their old home marks if they lived to Old Age. I do wish it applies on other Eves but it seems that some just get lucky to spawn in the coordinates of a town/city, where some Eves spawn to their old camps (this is how some veteran players keep their cities alive and revive them: if an Eve spawns to your city, there is a high chance they are the original Eve of the place). I've only once spawned to a town as an Eve, and it was my own town where I died to Old Age with my home marker set (but I've only had four Eve runs so yeah).

Similarly, but along more "you just have to give up and laugh" lines: the otherwise reasonably promising Eve run where I gave birth to ten boys.  TEN.  BOYS.  No girls.  Why does this game hate me?

Mr. Jason, sir; Please give higher girl spawn rate for the early gens PUH-EH-LEEZE! I BEG OF YOU!!!

The game should check the family tree, and if there are no girls alive then the next baby should be a girl.

Is the probability 50/50 when you are born? I feel like I have been a female twice the amount I've been a male, but maybe I've been abandoned more as a boy and just lived for seconds when as a girl I've been raised more often.

In some Sims games one could affect the sex of the child by eating apples or melons, but such 'magical' things will probably never be part of OHOL. Thank goodness for Old Age death and Eve spawn thing, so if an Eve runs out of girls, she could get back again. Too bad when you are not the Eve and can't spawn there... Maybe we get more chances with spawning in the future instead of directly affecting the sex of the baby.

Pen that says: "All work no play makes Jack a dull boy"
Or an axe that says: "Heeere's Johnny!"

Something that would work in repetition, or a well-known catchphrase would be fun.
Or something epic so it seems like you are going to change the world every time you pick the item up.

He didn't lie as I recall it. He said he needed it "for steel." He could well have been making a knife, or a bow saw or shears. My guess is it was for a knife and he didn't want to say so because of the paranoia around knives.

In any case, the youtuber guy totally saved that town from making mutton, buckets, carts and wool.

Iirc the town had a knife or two already.

Yeah the "instantly covering a firing kiln when there is pottery to dry" is one of the small annoyances I experience once in a while. Along with people blocking and cluttering the smithing area by standing there or moving/taking items from there (the battle for flat rocks is reaaaal). Charman family had the worst smithing area I've ever had the displeasure of operating. :'D Was planning on moving it.

You even hoarded a steel ingot, You said I was wasting all the iron on tools rather then what you wanted.

You had no need to make another knife other then because you felt like it. You ignored me and ran off when I tried to tell you we already had one. You acted like a griefer so I shot you.
I doubt you would've contributed much if you lived anyway.

So apparently I'm the stupid child for killing off a problematic person in our town. I'm still glad I killed you but I'm sad you didn't learn your lesson afterwards.
Don't be rude and don't hoard the file in your backpack.

A-ha, suspected there may be something else to this story. Yes, sometimes killings happen due to absolute miscommunication BUT in this case OP should've done a better job at explaining herself instead of resorting to immature barks towards others, so it is her fault she got herself killed.

So that's where I got the name Gorge, it passed down all the way to me.

#761 Re: Main Forum » Overreacting dumbasses » 2018-08-26 09:58:00

They may be newbies who have never crafted shears or been a shepherd and go crazy when they see someone smith blade blanks etc., OR they may be actual griefers who are trying to get drama going by accusing others and playing stupid, OR they may have been someone who knew there was no need for more knives if they did have some there which you didn't see. I want to think it is the first option though. A griefer would smith their blades and make arrows and bows outside of towns, and if someone is vocal over making their knife for sheep and bread (or blades for shears), people should chill and watch over with a bow before doing anything hastily. A town does need a knife (and right now arrows are much more deadly anyways...). It shouldn't take long to look over the guy if you are worried about them doing bad stuff.
Although now I'll probably just make a new smithing area at the corner of towns if I ever have to do blades/shears/bow saws etc. May look suspicious but I'm fine if I get killed for that.

Anyways, I was in Prager family too, yesterday, probably after your life as we had at least two knives and one shears. I was Gorge Prager IV (my mom named two of her kids Gorge so it was a thing there at that time). I was born during a murder and only saw that a crown wearing woman had killed a girl who didn't give steel out of her backpack. The crowned woman, Amy, had the shears and a knife and seemed to rule with an iron fist or something, I just worked my lil' buttcheeks off in the berry farm as most adults idled away near the bonfire and munched away at the berries (Adults! Eating handfuls of berries and standing around! Ahhh!). At one point, Amy made me her heir and I inherited a knife and the shears (didn't notice I had them at first in the apron). Then Amy got stabbed by a bakery lady and told me to kill her. I trusted Amy blindly and stabbed the woman as everyone was quiet. Then the baker lady told me Amy wanted herself stabbed. Sigh, if you are here, Amy and the baking lady, I'm open to listening to your side of that. If the baking lady was innocent, I'm sorry for the stab, I thought I could trust Amy.

Ok so what they are supposed to do is freeze over (disappear) and move (while invisible) to another place in tundra to open up again (so they wouldn't be static and block things as you can't drain them or remove them?). I've only seen an ice pond appear in tundra, I was slightly freaked out at first but I had heard they are supposed to change places. I've never poked penguins nor seen anyone poke penguins so that may explain why I haven't seen moving ponds around me yet.

#767 Re: Main Forum » If your baby doesn't speak, kill ''it'' » 2018-08-20 19:54:09

Just a heads up!
I have terrible lag when I load into my first life, so I will be a quiet baby at first, possibly not surviving if not fed once. After I am loaded in I will say hi, always, when I can actually see and move.
If your baby moves, you know they are loaded in and you can demand them to speak. If you don't want to keep them, don't try to carry them far as a woman: you are feeding them all that time and they can jump off and manage to survive or release a bear.

So I'd recommend:
1. feed the baby once if static, if the baby is moving, step 2
2. greet the baby/"f for food"
3. wait for them to speak, no food until that

The whole "real life isn't perfect" is such a weak excuse. You know what also isn't real life? being born the moment you die. Or gaining a year of age per minute, thus making your life only 1 hour long. This game moves fast, and one person can do a lot of damage.

I like the idea that cursed people simply spawn as Eves, don't let them destroy other people's things.

Also better marking of cursed people, like red hands on the baby / person.

These are minor graphical asset changes, not new mechanics that would really help.

Also, in the real world, if you are caught you often go to prison, and I haven't found how to build a prison yet in this game.

Glad to hear someone else agrees on that. There are differences in real life and games and that is a really good thing. So many games try to imitate real life too much and fall flat on their noses because games need a balance to deliver (an entertaining) sense of realism. There are so many awesome realistic things in One Hour One Life but debates over mechanics and ideas die quick when it goes to the "stop bitching, real world is harsh too" -dead end. We should talk and have ideas, if Jason refuses them, that's fine.

A mark on the baby itself could work better than the speech bubble thing. So many mothers don't wait at all to see the bubble of the child: they are busy moms and new moms. I baby test like there is no tomorrow, but I can't make others play like I do, there will always be someone who wants to do the opposite for a reason or another.

Ofc it is "easy to judge - hard to do" when it comes down to the trickiness of balancing and making anti-grief systems, but there are very good, valid ideas, and then I see others stamp the people behind them whiners. Great ideas can be refused, I don't mind, especially with an explanation, but oh well. Humans... big_smile

I'd also add to the "doomed to Eve life" thing: I suggest that a cursed player loses their ability to play as twins/triplets/quadruplets for x amount of time or x amount of Eve lives: this is to cover the plausible leak of the lineage ban. Would like to have it confirmed or fixed if possible: can a player bypass a lineage block if they spawn as twins, triplets or quadruplets?

Hi, I was Mike. Really glad you told the story of the old guard.

Did the town survive the murderings in the end?

I feel bad for not having raised the alarm about the triplets. It was obvious they were up to no good from the start (only saw them as babies), but I lied to myself thinking they might just be playing around and having a good time. They were three females and gave us much needed hope that we would endure, especially after all the stress from the cursed griefer (she was my sister, btw) and having to check every kid for curses.

On the bright side this has compelled me to make an account in the forum and I'm seeing a lot of interesting discussion on similar topics (cursed text, what is griefing, etc.).

Hi, Mike! Glad you made an account. Yes the town did survive with Samantha being the "bottleneck of births". But there was more blood spilled after I was gone. I gave my double knives to Sansa, she killed some people too, hopefully righteously, the family is going at gen 27, but Lilia's branch died off at gen 22.

I personally don't mind too much if a town falls, it happens anyways, but I'm glad I at least bought some time to give the town another chance to flourish.

Gj, Beating two griefers at once tho. So they decided to grief when one of them died, interesting reasoning lol.

Also, I have a theory that the cursed quad baby was the griefer from earlier. Perhaps Mia came back with some buddies, I think twins can bypass the lineage ban.

Thank you, I guess Oneal might have left me be and tried to find a woman to kill as I was just a male. I dunno, that's my best theory on how I survived. I am surprised I got both though.
Sad how they decided to go out like that, the town raised them, it's nobody's fault if a bear gets one of them- but maybe they were intending to grief and murder from the beginning.

Yeah I've been seeing this player (suspecting it is the same player) who just takes down others as they die. That's always the reasoning, "I'm gonna die anyways".

Oh yeah and my mistake: I was born to Mia the first time, and to you the second time!

Ahh, I wouldn't be surprised if the lineage ban leaks like that.

#771 Re: Main Forum » The old guard » 2018-08-20 13:22:40

Oh my, were you Lilia, my mother? (EDIT: was born to two different women, same town, fixed it) I was born to Mia and then Lilia, back to back, when the murder went down (starved first time). I'm Awesome! And the starved baby of Mia.
I'll probably make a bigger post with pics if you're curious to see what happened!
So we got some triplets it seems, I wonder if they were the cheerleader squad we laughed about?
One of them died to a bear (I didn't know, was busy) and the two who were left turned murderous, just like that. Thoryn stabbed a woman holding a baby, I stabbed Thoryn. Oneal got Thoryn's knives, and tried to stab me. I don't know how but I managed to survive and stabbed Oneal too. A baby girl (left behind by Hanz, the dead mother who got stabbed first) starved next to me as I was stuck in the after-murder mode.
I cursed Thoryn, people appeared on the bloody scene. I stood there and explained the best I could. Then we, three men, scattered to find out if we had a girl around. We did: Samantha.
Samantha birthed quadruplets later (boys), one was cursed. Me and Retal talked to Samantha about it, how it was really risky and they weren't even girls. So... babies got killed. One was almost left alive but I said he would probably revenge, so off he went.
This was my first murdering. And man did I have to kill people.

After that, lovely times. Lovely people, great things.
Too much Awesome can kill ya.

There are mean players as there are mean people, but letting others suffer indirectly or directly will just feed the flames and the downspiral continues. I'd say the revenge mentality is what keeps people so negative.

If you end up living with horrible players, just let go and advance to the next life. No need to sit and suffer, go on, you have the power. I know I ran when I was born to a cursed mom talking about me being a sex slave. And what do you know, amazing life right after that!

Isn't it more harmful to conclude that players who kill are mentally ill? I'm saying there is no one big truth that can be raised above others, but you are talking about finding that. There is no opinion or truth that can be raised above others. There are just matters that some agree on and some disagree on. Just because some opinions differ greatly, doesn't make anyone ill or anything less. Or their opinions obstructive.

Common sense of view: killing other players and being mean and unjustified is bad. Let's have fun and do great things.
Not-so-common sense of view: some players are here to ruin games and me killing them is justified. I must stop others' "fun" to let majority have their fun.

#774 Re: Main Forum » Having Fun and Messing Around is NOT Griefing » 2018-08-20 10:18:06

Anyways, regarding the original post, what I wanted to message here was:
basically, nobody has a right over others to dictate how they should play the game. But. People can kill people in this game. And that will happen. Always.

Here are some thoughts that hover around this subject:
"Some people should chill"
Sure. There are some players who are very short-tempered. If they got a weapon, they can act out on a whim, on their impulses and do as they please, just like anyone else.

"Let me have my fun"
Have it. Better yet, go have it somewhere where you can support having your own fun. You'll be safe and won't bother anyone. It'd be polite to do it like that. Not all experience your fun as fun.

"Nobody should be killed"
I disagree. But it'd be great if there were special servers for people who want no killing. Griefers would prolly love to mess up their towns though, by using the soil and making messes, trashing stuff, locking things and so on.

"People are killing harmless people"
Yes. People can do whatever they want just like you can too. You want to honk a goose throughout your life? Someone might want to kill you. Both can do whatever however. I'd advice the goose honker to honk the goose somewhere else (and forage food for themselves to continue doing that away from others).
But what is a harmless player? One who doesn't kill, one who doesn't work, one who at least isn't draining the resources...?
Nobody here on this thread wants to kill just harmless people. Nobody here wants to carry people either. People have different opinions on what is fun and what is annoying, what is lazing around and what is idle time. People who wield weapons just have a bit more power to back their actions. That's just how it is. Sometimes jokesters are not wanted. Sometimes they actually are a drain to towns.

Also, as a note. Some griefers can just simply "play you": They mimic veterans and act like them and then do unfair kills and screech out things like "they didn't do work" just to get two sides against each other. Sometimes it is a burnout veteran player, sometimes it is a long-time griefer/murderer who knows how to play the community and get them riled up.
Griefers also can and will "play dumb" and take on a role of a newbie. Yes, sometimes a real newbie is killed, and sometimes it was a griefer playing "the noob card".
Don't worry, every innocent one gets to respawn anyways. I was killed as an innocent player, and got a nice life right after. No problemo.

I know you don't want to solve it for us, Jason, but is there any chance you'll let us tame wolves so we can train them to chase and bite people that attack us?

Please remember that goes both ways. If you can use dogs to chase and attack griefers, they can use dogs to chase and attack you. I'd vote for dogs to be like snares, and not weapons.
And if dogs would automatically attack a player who stabs first, many guards/protectors would die. I know some think that all who stab are bad and deserve to die, but I don't.
