Was iron nerfed already? I was in a small town, early gens, and an old man told me there is no luck with iron south, telling me he will try some more. After I got old enough, I set off to northeast, figuring out it's less searched. I passed by two "small" badlands and 0 iron was on them. 0 veins. Then I ran even further and found 1 iron ore in someone's basket (probably died to one of the frigging zillion wolves) and found one iron mine in the middle of a huge badland. Still didn't see any ore on the ground. I nearly died multiple times on my travels.
I was going to make a note about the iron vein if someone could ever find it, trying to explain how far exactly it is (really need landmarks in the game other than roads, distance marker would be great too...) but I got shot with an arrow. My last words were about the vein.

But yeah it was just tedious and ridiculously hard to find iron, and as I said, I saw zero ground iron except the one in someone's basket. One iron vein after two badlands and all sorts of biomes in between.
Yeah I could travel more but that search took like 10 years of my life at least. Had to be careful in swamps, deserts and badlands which slows you down.

I was afraid that exactly this was gonna happen. not sure if iron update is live or you were unlucky, but absolutely no need to nerf mines and ground ore spawn rates, only that ridiculously huge amount of iron that exists on mines.

Yes. I don't think wood can be plastered but maybe it should take some other treatment before paint.

#803 Re: Main Forum » Baby Sling » 2018-11-02 13:52:24

I think slings DO allow for more exciting mother/baby gameplay. Much better to teach your kid if you can use your hands to perform tasks.

I think slings should occupy bag slots so its either or and maybe not be available early on to compensate? you'd still have to feed the kid, i mean.

Ive posted this on reddit and mentioned on discord but I wanna hear what you have to say

This game is fun because shows well detailed crafting and task performing, it makes no sense that we'd not use a sort of brush to paint walls.

Also, the hability to paint carts and horse carts to make them more durable would be a nice feature.

Well, then. Why not just add a timer to the ironmines? If a gen can only exctract a certain amount of iron per gen, that'd surely put some strain on tool production.

I don't like this idea. The same result could be achieved in making iron mines take more tiers to extract all iron and it makes no sense that you'd wait for iron to "regen" or anything of the sort.

This does technically make the game more difficult, but in reality I don't think it means much as it doesn't really affect or change how the average life is played out. It only affects the maximum lifespan of a village, and that doesn't really mean much to an average play experience since only what happens in the one hour of your life matters.. The only time I think it will be noticeable is when you're playing as an Eve/Eve's child and you're frustrated by the lack of iron.

(...)

How about new biomes? That could shake up the meta. A biome that doesn't have iron means there's less iron on average per square mile. They could even have a mix of old things and new things in them - imagine a tropical biome that has mango trees, cinnabar and lapis deposits, big limestone deposits, and water deposits of some kind (without geese). Or a forest biome that has a lot of trees, occasional rabbit holes, rare ponds, etc.

I think new biomes would achieve the same end goal of reducing the amount of nearby iron, but in a more interesting way that would change and improve the overall feel of the game.!

I agree this doesn't change the average life much but its needed before we get changes. You've been to abandoned towns full of everything before, man, it aint fun. I fear the pressure on eves too, but eveing isn't really all that hard if you've practiced it. But my main concern really is on making mines rarer. They're not so common and some cities already have to put a lot of work before finding their first mine.

New biomes definitely would help in many of the map related issues the game has, mainly most biomes doing either everythng or nothing, and does help spread out the already existing biomes. I've also been saing it forever, but new biomes should have alternatives for existing resources, otherwise they'll just be vanity biomes.

Edit: Also what Pein said about the wilds being boring. More biomes helps this a bit and so does adding more tiers to iron mining. Coal should become meta before oils so we can have coal mines too.

#807 Re: Main Forum » Don't Farm Mangoes » 2018-10-31 02:35:59

Oh, i was following onetech on cows, they're still OP then.

I do think mangos are okay, people will tend them if low on iron and cows are fixed. We should let these nerfs set in before really judging food sources too much. I think the idea of splitting iron mines in more tiers would help rebalance these things too.

Maybe a random Christmas tree in the snow biome? just for the time being and the Christmas tree will be gone when Christmas is over?

if we could decorate pines it would be cute too.

I really wish mangos took limestone fertilizer instead of soil. It runs out like iron and is a different change of pace in iron economy.

I think the funny part is seeing your projects done and knowing yu've beat the grind and helped your village.

#812 Re: Main Forum » [Strawpoll] Is the game becoming a tedious task simulator instead of a » 2018-10-30 17:01:55

I agree there is nothing to make it less boring, but you are not considering that another thing that makes it boring is that it's easy. I know that I can make 4 composts in under five minutes and that is enough for a berry farm for much longer (unless people take it for extra projects).

Making it harder makes the tedious part more proeminent but is also needed so that extra tech doesn't make it so easy to compost that its both almost infinite and easily made (assuming there's even a single person working on it). Also, ultimately this is planned to put a pressure in iron usage, which will probably be needed when more tech is added.

And honestly, i actually find it fun to pop berries into a bowl.

It's not because railroads are costly that they aren't used, it's because of how they're coded. I am almost certain before the nerf more railways would be used if they could actually turn. I know they can't do this because they're coded like animals which can only move one direction and what not. It just doesn't make sense to make railways when they have to be completely straight because you design a village before you ever remotely design the railway layout.

well this and the fact there's little reason as of yet to transport stuff en masse from a to b, except maybe mutton, which is why we use rails for that occasionaly.

My answer to ops question is that these tasks have to be grindy so we strive for better tech to do it more efficiently. Its boring to plant milkweed, but even worse to gather it from the wilds. tech is supposed to make that which takes a lot of work easier so we have more time for other projects (including upgrades to production and vanity/higher tech items). Ultimately working is boring and this game mimics this well.

Just by reading this, I have to say that I dont like the changes.

The only thing I agree with is, that there were too many veins. A vein should be special.
But if a vein is found and made into a mine, then it should give a lot of ore imo.
Maybe there could be another upgraded stage to mines? Or even a few. This could go on top of the tech-tree.
It takes a long time to make a vein a mine. Getting loose iron for the tools, getting rope for the bucket, rope for the cart.
Therefore it should really boost the town, when a mine is build. But now they give half the amount of ore and tools even break twice as fast, so its like 10 ore before the changes.

This is exactly the problem, mines cant be rare and full of resources, this leads to towns having much iron and others having none. Its just an iron mine, not gold or silver. I think adding a mid iron mine tier between the mine we have and the vein itself would be great. Maybe just strinking the vein with pickaxe gives some iron? (the advantage being you not needing froe and adze before getting some of the iron from mines)

there' no need for that. people expand because of resources, not bcause they wanna eat the exact same thing in a not so different grassland. map needs to get more comple before this is needed.

#818 Re: Main Forum » Last update fixes and mango nerf(no soil plz) » 2018-10-29 17:37:27

So, one suggestion I saw was to add a paint brush to give buckets of paint more uses. Maybe it could be done from pig hair?

I'm quite curious on how the new water/soil/iron economy will work. I just hope cisterns become more useful rather than less. If pumps aren't just a capacity or refill time upgrade they'd have to either complement cisterns or cover something else, possibly a need created by the nerfing of wells.

I know it's lame but cocoa would be fun, even if just for the vanity and challenge.

Oh yeah, fishing, Jason mentioned that a few weeks ago in an email. I hope worms don't become a bait only resource, maybe when compost is reworked they're needed again but in a better way.

the bigger biome idea was popular, but we would need branches, water and milkweed in every biome

Biomes should never be so big that we only ever see one of them, just big enough that you don't have all five close by. In this scenario we would need some alternatives to rope and early water and soil, indeed. I do think that since there's so few biomes, even if he adds one or two more the map will already feel very different though. Its hard to make it so without new biomes meaning aethetics only though.

First, because we'll eventually start complaining about it, but cinnabar and vermillion should probably stack. I tried gathering some before, they clutter easier than it seems.

Second, Jason has said he'll fix the exploit that is mangos giving free food and I would recommend they take some liming before growing fruits again. Lime is already used for plaster and can be used with corn, I think its a nice resource to give another use and a different pressure to food economy.

Is there any content or fixes relating to the previous update you guys would like to see? More tree farming and lime mining would hit the spot for me.

Maybe fertilizer?

I was going to ask why add another step but apparently after looking at food stats people actually are eating a lot of mangoes. The thing is I don't know if they're eating them because they're everywhere, they're unlimited, or they like eating mangoes since they're new.

Going to keep an eye on how many mangoes are eaten in the next few days I know it hit a really low number last hour (1) but it's one of the most eaten foods for yesterday.

It's easier to eat than it is to get milk, I think. Having to gather buckets was always a hassle and mangos only take knife being used once, unlike bread. I think this is a neat food. If it took some limestone to fertilize it that would feel great. Also, with lots of lime being gathered there is a push for plaster walls.

edit: mango slicer might not be a job, but farmer is. Just gotta haul those mangos to the bakery and someone will have them cut.
