simple really Female > Male in current meta

It is very difficult to make an all-female population work. Look at the ginger-pocolypse. Almost every town was overpopulated. That being said, it is completely impossible to make an all-male population work, which I guess is what you are trying to fix?

Going into a little more detail than before, there are two things I see wrong with this:

1) Family Dynamics: One of the things in this game most celebrated by Jason in advertisements is the idea of family. The 'Here you are a helpless baby completely dependent on a stranger for survival' thing. It creates a bond between players. Making it possible for adults to be born into families would weaken this.

2) Population: While I understand you want to make it possible for girls to be born into lines where they would otherwise die out, try thinking of the flip-side: girls being spawned into populations where they are entirely unneeded. Every female immigrant is another fertile woman ready to give birth on the spot. This would be like the ginger-pocolypse all over again. You can starve a baby if the population problems are too extreme. How do you starve an adult? You can't. You can kill them though - and people would. Murder would become a lot more common. I'm not sure more murder is what I want from this game.

Edit: you edited your post while I was writing this one. I don't believe females giving birth without a male isn't magical. I believe it is a required game mechanic. I don't believe adults being born to males would be. We already have things in place to help cities live on in the case of lineages ending, which I mentioned in my first post. I can just see this suggestion causing some problems. I'm really not trying to offend you, just trying to bring in some constructive criticism. Admittedly, I could have done this better in my first post. I posted that before my thoughts had fully formed, which was a mistake on my part. Sorry

#102 Re: Main Forum » Immigration (new concept) » 2018-09-26 05:50:43

Hmm... Not sure I like the idea... I don't see it fitting into the feel of the game. It feels a little too magical to me. We already have immigrants in towns already- Both
Eve spawns and people running to the bell. (Not that eve spawns are entirely realistic, but they are a required game mechanic)

Also, why do people hate males so much? I understand it can be frustrating when you need a girl and keep getting boys, but they are the most productive members of OHOL society. I would take a male-majority town over a female-majority town any day. As long as there are a couple of fertile girls, any settlement would greatly benefit from being almost all male.

To be fair, we might use fences if they weren't so easy to grief. It it weren't so easy to just remove the center shaft or to dig them up, we may use them more often. As it is, other things just work better.

On that note, isn't it a little too easy to remove adobe oven bases? All you would need is a bucket of water and a bowl and POOF! - no more pen.

Well, I just tried.

Note: This is a lot bigger than you may think.

I only got it about a third done before I died. It didn't help that I had to make the compost (including planting the carrots and feeding sheep) on my own, as well as make the hoes and clear some land. Someone started planting milkweed in my soil at one point too. XD

Maybe I just chose a bad town to try it in, but the town was running out of berries pretty often, so I figured having another berry field couldn't hurt.

Maybe pein will be faster than I was. Good luck pein! smile

PS: Pein, if you are going to try this, you might want to bring a friend along to help smile

#105 Re: Main Forum » Other graphic for composting compost pile (flies?) » 2018-09-25 22:13:54

+1

Too often I see wet compost piles just sitting there because no one finished the job, even when there is a lot of dung in the pen. I guess people are too busy to check which are composting and which are unfinished, because I have seen too many towns at risk of having no soil because everyone just assumes those piles right there are composting when they aren't. I always have to stop what I'm doing to quickly get dung in those piles, as experience tells me no one else will. Making the wet compost piles and the composting piles look slightly different would help this issue immensely. It would help people see the issue at a glance, rather than having to stop what they are doing to run their mouse over all the piles (which I find myself doing far too often).

I'd say we need oil and such for fires that can last in rain, more shelter options and easier clothing first before adding such an element to the game. Otherwise people would have to sit indoors or freeze outside while it rains, and many years from your lives could be "lost" to rain. People would fight for clothes.

No comment on the rain, but flax or cotton would be a good addition for easy textiles. They would be grown like any other crop, and people have been using them for centuries. In fact, flax is thought to be one of the first plants to be cultivated by man. It is actually used for both linens (from the fibers) and oil (from the seeds), so it would cover two of your points. I think it would fit into the game well. Cotton could be used in the same way.

Wasn't Eve stuff changed though? In addition to spawning to their old towns, Eves now have high chance of spawning into any city and civilization if they just died of Old Age. I know I have spawned into some other Eve's town as an Eve after just dying to Old Age in my last Eve life. So other Eves are constantly reviving other Eves' towns?

Would explain why so many cities have like three families living in them.

Eve's spawn in a location where there was another player at their time of death (when Eve's death is caused by old age). This makes it likely for them to spawn into cities, so even if a lineage dies, the city is likely to continue on. At least this is what people have told me when I asked the same question. My experiences in the game back it up. I've spawned in deserted cities often. None of them have been mine (sadly).

#108 Re: Main Forum » How Murder Ruins a Lineage » 2018-09-23 16:18:55

Not sure this will work unless you play a couple lifetimes in that city in a row. There will always be other players in other camps when you go on your killing spree. They can still be born into the city. And then the ones you didn't kill plus others who were still in other camps will be born the next generation, and the next.

As much as I hate to say it, large cities can actually benefit from having a few people lineage banned. Good players are unlikely to die by your hand, meaning the ones you are killing are likely the less experienced players. As long as there is a good player or two around, the city will be fine, and having a few less unexperienced players can actually help the town. That being said, I still disagree with the morality of this strategy.

Basically, you will still need to kill a lot of people in bigger cities to kill the lineage (or at least all of the girls).

Most of times asking to die by someone doesn't really make people do it for you very often. I have been mostly at bakeries for them to kill me but they said no. Best way you could motivate anyone to kill you is try to do some soft griefing, like chugging all pies they have if they don't kill me asap. Also killing would rise havoc at any time, no matter how good the thought would be.
Be like "I'll - eat - your- pies - then - if you- don't." I doubt any sane baker would say yes to that. smile

I always kill someone if they ask to die. I just make sure to have a couple witnesses around so they can help back me up when people start asking questions.

I figure it is better to help the person out before they have to resort to griefing to get their ban.

I've never had any drama result from it.

Edit: I just realized my first paragraph would sound really bad out of context XD

#114 Re: Main Forum » Baby who hated me » 2018-09-22 22:30:55

I'm guessing she was trying to get killed to get banned from the lineage. I have people asking me to kill them for that reason all the time. Asking someone with a knife nicely might have worked better for her smile

#115 Re: Main Forum » Baby who hated me » 2018-09-22 22:21:46

I would just ignore it.

It's happened to me a couple times before when I've done nothing but acknowledge the baby's existence. Sometimes I'm the mother, other times no.

I'm a pretty hard worker and try to treat people in the game well, so there is nothing I did to offend him/her.

It is just a griefer. Some people are just silly like that. Don't take it too personally. If you had actually done something wrong, they would have given you specifics rather than just cussing you out randomly.

I hope this doesn't affect your opinion of the game too much. Most of us in this community are kind. The griefers can just me more vocal at times smile

#116 Re: Main Forum » Bug: Food goes into backpack when trying to eat by clicking the face » 2018-09-22 21:01:17

I had to relearn where to click to eat as well. It is even worse when you are wearing an empty apron as a kid. The only place you can click to eat in that case is the very top of the head. There are still times when I fight with my backpack two or three times before successfully eating. XD

I like the idea, but I can't help but imagine the last person inside dying for some reason or another, effectively locking everyone out of the room. I guess you just have to make sure the walls aren't made with something permanent.

Good job on his hair! So pretty!

Also, as much as I like the black woman sprite (she looks so good!), I don't think I would like playing her in game simply because her hair makes her taller. She would be more likely to block things in the tiles above her. (Similar to how I don't really like playing the ginger girl in the game because it is too hard to notice when she ages past childbearing years. I don't like bright screens, so my dimmer screen makes it harder to notice subtle differences in color/shade)

Still, good job on the sprites! They look so good!

#121 Re: Main Forum » New Tree Saplings » 2018-09-21 09:08:40

I witnessed maple saplings growing into mature maples in my last life!  Pretty cool smile

The time trees take to grow varies a lot depending on species, subspecies, region, environmental conditions, etc. I see no problem with making trees in-game take a while to grow. If your town is to the point where you find yourself needing to plant them, then it should be able to last the generation or two it could take for the trees to grow.

Some random tree facts:

The maples in my area take around 10-20 years to reach the height they are in game (depending on soil quality, amount sunlight/water, etc). They take another 30+ years to grow to full heght. (Keep in mind I use 'full height' loosely. They will keep growing until something causes them to break down or rot, although only marginally after about 50 years) They can get pretty big here, bigger than they would in most other climates.
They like the temperate rainforest we have in this region. They can reach upwards of 100 ft tall and live up to 300 years in the right conditions.

Oaks take much longer to reach maturity, about 100 years. They are very slow-growing. It is one of the reasons oak wood is so expensive. I have a 125-150 year old oak in my yard. It's been here longer than my town has. They have been known to live over 1000 years in the right conditions and can grow upwards of 70 ft tall, although it's the oak tree's spred that is most impressive with a radius that can reach over 150 ft. Just imagine a tree that's almost twice the length of an American football field. They can be massive in their old age.

I was born to an nameless mother of the Dover clan north of our little village. She named me Ocelotl.

When I first was brought to town there were a couple things that, even at a young age, I found odd. First was that every single person in town was a ginger. Second, there were a lot of people running around for such a small village. Too many. I could tell there was not enough food for all of us. Some say that no baby should ever have to worry about starvation. I was not given that privilege.

When I finally grew hair, I only had one thought on my mind: Food.

I quickly ran north, collecting a few berries in a basket along the way, until I found a small area of the perfect temperature. I stayed in that area for years, never having contact with another person in all that time. Some say long periods of social isolation can have serious negative effects on a person, but I seemed to turn out fine.

At least that is what I told myself.

I must have been in my late teens by the time I decided to head back to the village. Perhaps the isolation finally became too much for me.

There were noticeably a lot less people in the village when I arived. They were, however, all still gingers. All but a single man, my second cousin, Negan III.

Looking around my small village, I started to feel some guilt about abandoning it all those years ago. Although there wasn't a food shortage any longer, the village had not progressed at all. I quickly started working at the forge, trying to make up for lost time. The years passed and all was well.

That is until SHE arrived.

Her name was Unknown. She stood a couple tiles away from the forge, never moving, never eating, just staring at all the people who passed. I felt some vague nostalgia at the sight, as if remembering something from past lives. These vague memories told me that similar comatose states were not uncommon and, if fed, the person usually recovered in time. As our food shortage was no longer an issue, I tried feeding her a berry.

Imagine my surprise when the berry passed right through her.

Holding in my scream, I asked others if they could see her too. Some claimed they could, but I wondered if they agreed just to appease me. Did all those years of isolation affect me more than I originally thought? I may have deemed myself insane if it wasn't for the odd occurrences that started happening after her arrival.

You see, upon her appearance, we could no longer have children.

Years passed without a single birth among us. How could this be possible? There were so many fertile women in the village. How could not a single one of us have a baby in all those years?

Was I imagining that glint of amusement in Unknown's eyes?

As a few of the older women hit menopause, we were starting to worry. We needed children, and fast. Finally, after years of hope and prayer, a baby arrived. The entire village rejoiced! Everyone but Unknown, that is. I must have imagined that anger behind her blank stare. She wasn't really there after all. It was just my imagination, right? She COULDN'T be there. No one could last so long without eating.

To our dismay, that baby soon died. And the next. And the next. Stillbirth after stillbirth, Unknown continued to stare, a cynical pleasure behind her eyes.

We suffered years of stillbirths and we were getting desperate. All fertile women now stood by the fire, hoping that the warmth would somehow help our fertility. It must of worked, as soon we were blessed with a healthy little baby girl, my daughter, whom I named Love. Once again our village rejoiced! We were so busy pampering her with love that I didn't notice when my milk dried. My poor little baby didn't utter a peep as she starved to death in my arms.

I was distraught. How could I have let that happen? How?! My poor baby was dead! Because of me!

No!

It wasn't my fault.

IT WAS HER'S!!

Unknown's blank stare ate at my soul. She killed my baby! How could she do this to us? What did we do to deserve this?

Soon, despite Unknown's best efforts, we were blessed with another baby girl, the first to survive to childhood. I couldn't help but feel a bit of accomplishment. Unknown seemed to have no power over this one.

After ensuring the little angel's safety, I went back to smithing. I tried my best to ignore Unknown, who was still standing eerily by the kiln. She had lost. We had won. There was no reason to give her any thought any longer. At least, that is what I assumed.

It wasn't long before I heard the poor little angel's mother crying out for her. She was missing. A frantic search ensued. After what seemed like a lifetime of searching, all we found of her was a pile of bones. We were too late. We had failed. Our village was dead.

Angry, I ran to Unknown. I was unsure what I was going to do to her but filled with blind rage as I was, I was going to make her suffer at my hands the same way we all had suffered at her's. However, when I arrived at the kiln she was gone. Her mission complete, she had vanished without a trace. I would never be able to enact my revenge.

The rest of my life was a blur. Her face haunted me every second of every day. I couldn't shake the feeling of her being somewhere out there, laughing at us in our misery. She had doomed us all.

So, that was the most interesting life I've had in a while. It isn't the first time I've come across that glitch. One of the odd consequences of connection issues. I had only ever seen it happen on roads up until this play-through. It is basically just a visage (for lack of a better word) of the person left in a certain spot, while they are actually off somewhere else. I am pretty sure Unknown left our camp early on and settled elsewhere. Her line continued for a short while after our's died out. The visage must have disappeared when she died at age 50:

Thank you to all the people that made this life a fun one!

Also, I apologize: I am not the best writer. I am a whole lot better with numbers than I am with words. I am awful with names too. Once I find the names of the people mentioned in the family tree, I will add them in my post. I hope you enjoyed reading it regardless!

#123 Re: Main Forum » How come people die in towns with plenty of food. » 2018-09-21 02:25:47

Connection problems are more common than you may think. Whether it is actual disconnect or lag that prevents eating, it happens to people all the time. Lag is more deadly when you are a kid too, as the food bar is shorter. Lag is even worse in big cities, so kids will die even with a lot of food around.

#124 Re: Main Forum » Question about Eve Spawns » 2018-09-20 00:21:29

So, another question.

If you die as eve of old age near a home marker, does it guarantee you will spawn at one of your villages, or just a village in general? I've died of old age and spawned as eve in villages before but sadly, none of them were mine even though I am pretty sure I had both active lines and deserted camps at the time. I've never been able to revisit one of my settlements to see how it progressed sad

Is it just bad luck on my part?
