Awesome, still not too big and if people want to live in a smaller town they can always just move away

Milkweed would still be needed as long as you don't have sheep & shears. That means you'd need quite a bit of it still, since early towns need a lot of rope. I wouldn't call it obsolete at all. From the top of my head:

Hatchet: 4
Bowdrill: 4
Bow: 4
Arrow: 2
Rope to get baby sheep: 4
That's 18 mw already, at least. You may be able to find this in the wild if you explore a bit, but it may require some farming.

Then optionally:
People like to make stone hoes: 4
Deep well if it happens before having sheep: 8 (for the minimum of two buckets, possibly more)
More arrows: 2 each
Perhaps someone makes another hatchet: 4
Boxes: 4 each, 6 for slot box

Having a cheap pine house would be dope. Perhaps it'd decay faster? So adobe and especially stone houses would be more durable, but more costly.

One of those boys SID'd.  I've had low overalls SIDs lately so... I'm curious as to whether the high girl numbers and no benefit to being a boy make any difference.

I just wanted to reply to this cuz to me there is benefit to being a boy: actually getting things done & exploration. Being born as a girl kind of automatically means I won't go exploring cuz I'd rather have my kids being born in town, and abandoning them sucks. I also won't start any projects that take so long I know I'll have to interrupt them for my babies. Being a boy feels like it gives me a bit more freedom, which is a big plus in my book.

Anyway, true, there aren't a lot of boys around lately. Think it has to do with the 'less than x fertile women' thing; the families are so small that it rarely gets above that number.

#105 Re: Main Forum » Listen to your baker folks » 2019-11-11 10:51:29

I might've been in the same town you were yesterday, or there's more like this. I was surprised to find a lot of different foods in the bakery (pies, mutton, turkey, bread, potatoes) and everybody working on stuff together. The town had a cute, different setup with just about enough for everyone, except clothes- so I decided to become a tailor since the town did have a loom already. My (only) daughter helped me out the entire time until I died of old age. It was really pleasant.

No not really.  I mean, I can see how people might do this, but it's not really different than people putting items in the shape of potentially offensive signs, writing on paper, or whatever.

So you think cuz one bad thing happens it's okay if more bad things happen?

#107 Re: Main Forum » Crafting signs should be easier » 2019-11-10 00:23:49

I personally like making letters and just turning them into stamps would remove a lot of the effort (and to me, fun) that goes into it. Would make it much too easy for people to write down slurs or w/e and then lock the sign. Locking signs is extremely weird to me anyway, but there's probably a reason for that one. But how about needing to use something to remove letters from a sign (in a similar way to needing the rubber ball to erase paper)?

Regardless, I agree making letters is crazy heavy on resources; a word like CARROT uses up 12 skewers and 6 milkweed, so 18 water. Why can't 1 skewer turn into 2 or 3 letter stock? Or 1 letter stock into 2 or 3 hyphens? Makes much more sense size-wise anyway.
Related: Why can't you take a thread off a needle, and why can't you cut a ball of thread into multiple threads? This never made much sense to me.

I think people would do that at first, then get bored of it. More likely people would use it for naming themselves roles, or RP names like "Queen".

People never seemed to get bored of naming their kids different slurs, so I doubt they would here.

Actually it's not very correct math. If you make 15 yum chain through life then every food gives you +7.5 pips more on average. I mean, if a berry pie was eaten at your beginning chain (let's say when you have 3 chain), would you count it like this: 48+4*3 ? It's better to count your average food gain. So correct math if you make 15 yum chain through life would be like this: 48+4*7.5. Seems like it's still worse than a mutton pie for a non yummer.

Using 7.5 makes sense if you eat it at any point in the yum chain, but I was talking about eating it as your 15th food - the order in which you eat things matters a lot in this case, cuz you can eat the more efficient foods first and the less efficient foods later to make them more efficient. As Destiny says:

DestinyCall wrote:

There is basically a "sweet spot" where you must get the yum chain bonus at least X high before it is a good idea to eat certain foods.

Coconut Fruit wrote:

And also I don't think you can get to 20 yum chain, unless you are naked. When I yummed I always ended with 16-17 yum, even tho I ate all smallest foods.

I've gotten to higher than that quite a few times, both as boy and girl, while wearing clothes. I generally don't eat until I really need to (i.e. no pie when I'm only 1 pip short from full), but I focus a lot on the smaller foods to get my yum up, like you said. Maybe there's just more than you realise. Corn is a difficult one there- what I generally do if I have no other yum options but corn is I'll shuck one for myself, but also shuck a few more to dry, just to 'force' the use of dry corn later on.

Travel (diff biomes)/wild foods help a lot to get yum up as a boy, and as a girl you just need to have a lot of kids since you need to feed them and lose pips faster. I've seen some people nurse on purpose just to get their pips down, but I've never done that myself (cuz THAT seems like a waste of resources to me).

#111 Re: Main Forum » Sheep efficiency » 2019-11-08 22:44:06

Although I agree that there are plenty of other good yum foods, and in general berry pies are terrible because of how much water is used to make them, there is one thing that complicates the situation: high yum, the only reason to make them in the first place.

Mutton pie generally costs much less water than berry pie, yielding 76.9 food pips per water vs. 35.3 food pips per water (btw, using the apparently outdated ohol gamepedia for these numbers for lack of a better source)
But what if high yum?
Let's simplify this to a scenario where we have 4 people running on 14 yum that includes mutton pie but not berry pie.

The mutton pie would yield 60 food pips / 76.9 food pips per water
The berry pie would yield 48+4*15 food pips / 79.4 food pips per water

Suddenly the berry pie would be better to make! It's still worse than the other pies or some other food (if not consumed yet), but better than breaking yum w/ the "best" mutton pie...

I know things don't practically work this way since non-yumming people are gonna eat the berry pie and waste all the resources, but still. If everyone would yum we'd save more resources than if we'd only make mutton pies forever and ever.

Edit: Correct me if I'm wrong btw

Agreed, more mutton is good, but can people please stop smacking alllll the mutton onto pie crusts? I'm often trying to make several different pies/bread for yum and after getting a bowl of berries or carrot come back to a. the mutton I left for cooking being gone, b. having a bazillion (often still raw) mutton pies and c. the dough I left for bread being gone too. Only mutton pies, with a total of 1 yum, which could've been:
1. Cooked Mutton
2. Mutton Pie
3. Berry Pie
4. Carrot Pie
5. Rabbit Pie
6. Berry Carrot Pie
7. Berry Rabbit Pie
8. Carrot Rabbit Pie
9. Berry Carrot Rabbit Pie
10. Bread
11. Buttered bread

It's really demotivating to see all my crusts and dough gone when I'm trying to provide some variety for yum (assuming nobody sticks all the yum pies into their bp and then leaves). I often don't even try again when this happens. Mutton pie is good cuz it's cheap and nutritious, but on high yum a slice of bread, cooked mutton or a carrot pie would actually be better.

@ whoever does this, I understand you're trying to help, but you're really not (unless there's an immediate need for food to prevent mass starvation, but then you could've maybe actually baked the pies too...).

I keep wondering how y'all want to make sure the player actually steps onto the gallows/stake/stocks. They're not just gonna step up there to die/sit and do nothing

Capture them with a lasso then tie them up? It'd be awful if anyone could just do that to anyone else

Instead of adding food pips/overflow, overeating causes people to poop. This can then be used for compost.

#118 Re: Main Forum » Completely bonkers food rework idea » 2019-11-07 18:05:11

New way to grief: Go to bakery and eat all the pies. All of them. They make new pies? Eat them.
Heck, why limit it to pies? They make stew? Eat all of it. Gobble up those eggs. Munch even more berries than before.
Worried about people noticing and killing you? By the time they would, they've all starved.

#119 Re: Main Forum » whoever made the fort in the northeast part of map on snow... » 2019-11-06 11:22:52

I'm sorry but if someone draws/builds/graffiti's a swastika on anything, in a mostly Western situation, there's a 99% chance that they do indeed mean the nazi symbol (whether they draw it the right way around or not, since they're actually not exactly the same but flipped). There is no reason to give people the benefit of doubt. Also, hammer/sickle don't carry the same message of hate & racism at all.

Indeed it is the game's fault/responsibility to have rules about this kinda shit. Did you know using the nazi salute is actually illegal/a criminal offence in some countries? That's because it's more than "just a symbol".

#120 Re: Main Forum » Suggestion:Cheese! » 2019-11-06 11:14:27

Oooo yes more uses for tomatoes! Though it doesn't make complete sense to add already melted cheese to a raw pizza?

Maybe
bowl of cheese + plate = plate of cheese
plate of cheese + knife = plate with sliced cheese
sliced cheese can be eaten just like that or added to bread

plate with sliced cheese + knife = 'grated' cheese
which can then be added to a raw pie crust? or on top of (raw) tortilla chips?

#121 Re: Main Forum » Another wacky food idea » 2019-11-06 11:00:33

Although I like the idea of thinking about what you eat more / focusing on yum since that'll be the only way to survive longer even when eating 'small' food, this would be terrible in practice when playing as an eve or in an early town. Getting sheep would be awful, as would looking for iron.

#122 Re: Main Forum » Nothing lasts forever ... let it all decay. » 2019-11-05 17:53:09

Food generally has no time to decay since it gets eaten pretty fast, but you want seeds to stick around forever?? God that'd be hell. People accidentally pick up seeds incredibly often and then dump them on the floor, which then takes a spot that cant be used until either someone picks it up or it decays. We don't have enough place to save all those seeds forever. Just put them in a bowl if you want to keep them.

With bones I see no reason to not let them decay. Why do you want to keep those around? They'd just be in the way or cause useless effort if you need to put them on a pile.

I agree with OP, everything should decay eventually.

Ugh.

I really dislike all the peeps who throw around slurs and apparently now build swastikas n shit. It's understandable to want the game to be open for everyone etc., maybe even make it lifelike so those things just 'happen to exist', but I think drawing a line is necessary sometimes. If you don't, people will think this kinda stuff is fine and it'll just get worse. Can't even tell if it's "just people being edgy" or actual hate speech. Neither are okay anyway, for that exact reason.

Curses & Donkey Town work fine for people disrupting the game by stealing, killing, w/e. They don't for this kinda stuff. This isn't about trolling or ruining the experience of other people in game, this is about real world issues and should be treated as such. It isn't even necessary to ban people indefinitely; initially just a warning or short term ban should be enough to make people realise that they could lose their ability to play if they keep doing this shit.

I don't want one of my favourite games to be a place where bigots feel at home, and I hope Jason doesn't want that either. This being far too common is one of the reasons I stopped streaming OHOL, since I am responsible for what is shown on my stream and I don't want to offend anyone. I have to refrain from streaming the game at all unless I can be 90% sure there's gonna be no slurs or w/e on my screen.

add either burdock root or berry+carrot bowl (mashed) to flat rock, then use that on the snared hole.
