Seriously what has this community become? We were always toxic but at least we talked about the game instead of complaining about each other and cringe flexing.
Real talk: Did this game promote a toxic community or did this community promote a toxic experience? Both? What's more to blame? I have my answer but its a fun question, no?
I respect Neptune's passion and fearlessness when speaking ill of others. ![]()
I loved the rift and i dominated most arcs with my lineage. Spoon didnt even play during the rift. Tarr also used my blood to activate a end tower in the middle of a maze one arc which spawned the baby apocalypse.
I respect spoons tenacity and unyielding nature. Without him these forums would be dead. Plus its always fun to see the stuff he comes up with and how people react. I recommend not taking this stuff so seriously. Laugh, have fun, and do your best to respect each other.

What a sad existence that must be.
You should know that given you're the expert. Literally no one cares you have problems with spoon so ide say its probably time you stfu. You're not the first, you wont be the last. Its happened year after year and you all just need to get over it and live your lives. Does spoon seriously bother you that much? Or do you find gratification from belittling him and others? Either way, you're much more annoying than he is.
Same goes for you neptune.
Im an old vet and been here forever, you can ask any of the old vets
Hello hello, its been a while
After a long hiatus that is likely to continue i have decided to step into the rotting cesspool that is this game and its community.
Those of you being rude to spoon and trying to change him. Its cute, but its never going to happen. If you dont like what hes saying, ignore it. That said dont presume you're in the majority when you bash spoon and say no one cares what he says. There are many who read these forms just to see the antics spoon gets up to.
I supposes we could just have storage boxes on the ground instead of on walls -- takes up the same amount of room, uses less resources, still blocks passage.
Boxes dont insulate. Plus boxes take ropes. Which I think most would agree is harder to mass produce than stone, adobe, pine, or plaster. Issue i see with the current building mechanics is how restrictive they are. Insulated spaces are too small to do any real work in. Large builds are really just for looks and waste valuable tiles. City walls are no longer essential and serve as more of a detriment than a benefit. Building in an active town is chaos and beyond annoying.
Seriously. Self reliant fams and setting a ratio between the number of fams and total server pop. Its not that complicated. Families over 15 people are a mess, over 20 is a shit show. Impossible to keep stable, especially in early game. Who would have thought limiting fams to 4 and making them completely reliant on each other was a bad idea. Oh wait everyone thought that, thinks that, and said it a thousand times.
Any paved road under 1000 tiles is a waste. Especially given the fact pavers are incredibly forgiving. As long as you dont pick it up or they dont hit permanent obstructions they can keep running if you clear ahead of them. Prepping for them is easy enough and you can use skewers and stakes to guide them cheaply. There is no excuse to make one under 1000 tiles. I agree they are too expensive. Probably the most expensive item in the game. Running one costs the equivalent of 36 iron or 24 buckets of water. Not to mention a bucket of milk, lime, two bowls of water, yellow dye and a large rock. Pavers cant be places in trucks so unless you carry it all the way back it will likely be lost somewhere in the wilderness, wasting an engine and etc.
You gain more space than the walls take up if you use tables.
Iron is the most important resource in regards to advanced civs. An iron veins gives you about 75 iron ingots and costs about 660 pips. This is insanely expensive compared to oil based iron. One tarry spot gives you 720 iron profit (864 total). One tarry spot gives 576 buckets of water.
Now to the cost of a tarry spot.
1 Newcomen atmospheric core (reusable) [3 wrought iron, 1 rubber]
4 stone blocks (reusable)
1 pump beam kit (reusable)
1 rope (reusable)
1 blade [1 steel]
1-12 pipes [1-12 steel, 2 buckets of water]
1-12 charcoal
1-12 buckets of water
1 engine (reusable) [17 steel, 1 wrought iron, 1 rubber]
1 oil spigot (reusable) [3 steel]
24 tanks [24 wrought iron]
1 tank kero [1 wrought iron + previous pump]
Base oil set up will cost 63 iron. 24 of that is reusable. It will maybe cost 14 buckets of water. This is based on a bad run of oil. Oil can cost less than two buckets of water sometimes. Iron is in higher demand for pumping oil than water. It costs almost an entire iron vein to set up for drilling oil. Water is important but its the main resource in keeping people alive, not progressing through tech. Iron makes tech and tech makes water. Past a certain point oil based water is the only stable source. Given water is easier to come by naturally this makes iron more important than anything in regards to late game. Its also one of the most poorly managed resources in the game, making it even more important to produce surpluses of. Iron makes oil, oil makes iron and water. I see people dumping tanks upon tanks into diesel wells but i hardly see people drilling for iron.
Trucks dont run out of fuel. That hour timer starts once its parked and is reset any time anyone drives it.

Whats your point? Im getting tired of people using this statement like it actually has any weight in discussions.
My response was to kinrany who said entertainment is useful and practical. Sure its fun, and it IS a game, but the point of this thread was to talk about whats efficient and whats not surrounding building. Entertainment isnt efficient or even an asset in terms of survival. Its often wasteful and distracting, used to get you killed a lot in game. Though personally i think it adds some much needed character.
My point was that some people are way too serious about this game.
I wasnt even really talking about the game. I was talking about life in reference to the game. If you have something to add to my point or if you disagree have at it. Otherwise dont attempt to shut people down with weak statements like "its a game". Not sure why the fact that ohol is a game should discount people who take it seriously. A lot of people take games seriously. Just because this isnt a popular game like chess, football, poker, lol, or etc doesnt discount people who take it seriously. People have a right to feel strongly about whatever they want. This forum is full of strong opinions. Dont presume you have any power over them. Maybe try expressing your own, instead of attempting to quiet others.

This is true. But just like real life, some of the most cherished things are often the most impractical. Whats practical about painting, sculpture, jewelry, music, games, film, etc. Yet they are what gives life character and beauty.
Wheres a vampire plague when you need one..
In the future figure out where you are in relation to the bands. All spawns are fixed to the biome bands. Are you on the north end of the jungle biome or three laylines north of the tip of the snowy biome? Figure this out and the answer is almost always east from that point. If you set up your town west of spawns it may be west, but most of the time it is east. Spawns occasionally reset to their origin point, around tarr monument, so keep that in mind. If you're not afraid of people finding your town or messing with your stuff leaving breadcrumbs go a long way.
Real master griefers dont get exiled or cursed.
Interesting idea, not sure it would add anything of value to the game though. Would pretty much be the hierarchy system without any in game mechanical ties.
What if it was cosmetic based? For example, if you reached the master smith rank whenever you held a smithing hammer it would be on fire. Master griefer, knife or bow on fire. Different color of flames for ranks. Would be an easy way to show you know what you're doing and are seasoned in whatever field. But this type of mechanic would likely result in people spamming things instead of actually trying to be smart in the way they play. Someone uses all the steel to make hoes, then hoes a few hundred piles of dirt so they can rank up their smithing and farming instead of actually being productive or smart with resources.
It would be cool if there was a really difficult version of the apoc tower. But instead of resetting the server it reset resources. Stuff like tarry spots, soil deposits, milkweed, wild foods, and etc. As long as its not obstructed of course. It would be cool to be able to renew areas that would be unlivable otherwise.
That being said the current apoc tower is pretty boring. Almost no point to it and it takes an incredible amount of dedication to complete one. Plus its not interesting, i think most griefers are attracted to certain methods because it creates a reaction. Towns group up against them, chase them, curse them. That chaos and mayhem is the main motivator for most griefers imo. If their goal was exclusively to kill off fams or destroy towns there are far more effective ways for them to do so without getting attention, being caught, or being cursed. But i think they like those elements and the notoriety that comes with it.
But back to the apoc tower. It gives no one attention and it gives no notoriety. Anyone could say they triggered it. Typically you want it to be a secret so any kinda of drama or chaos surrounding it should be avoided. Its a mechanic that just doesnt fit in the current griefer pathology. If it was some type of sacrificial blade that needed to be used X amount of times and wasnt time based i could see the apoc being far more attractive to griefers. But building a tower that takes at minimum 24 hours, 5 lives in the brown fam, and killing five babies seems like a boring and annoying thing to do. Its no surprise people dont do it.
Here are two variants of the game, not owned or developed by Jason, that use his sprites. Maybe one of them has the mine shaft yiu're talking about.
Yea from the home page.
1,916,701 hours last i checked.
Still find it crazy that this game has been played collectively for 218 years. Imagine what this many people could accomplish spending 218 years collectively on something.
If we didnt have server resets and etc, what do you think this game would look like with the total effort of those 218 years?
What if you built up enough curses you were sent to donkeytown for a week or something?
Say you break 20 curses you go for a week. After the week the curses are scrubbed. If another 20 is accumulated you go for two weeks and so on. Eventually serial griefers would have their accounts in donkeytown for months.
