That's not a good idea since young children starve easily in the wilderness due to the low health bar. Also the bellow is really not in need early game.
Children should always stay in camp / farm when young.

It's completely opposite in my experience.  As Eve you're having children constantly.  And having toddler in wilderness totally cripples your ability to do anything usefull.  So send your kids to gather food and usefull materials and stay at home building camp.  There you can easily put toddler on warm spot, so you just need to feed him max three times and you can keep working all the time.

And if any kid starves with basket and sharp stone, well, good riddance.  It was berry mucher/carrot sponge, a walking famine generator that would sit all the time by the farm, eat everything and do next to nothing.  You can teach them in towns, but you really cannot afford that in Eve's camp.

Skewer seems to break almost on first use.  I use it only as emergency to plant the last milkweed for next hoe.

On a positive side:

startafight wrote:

the running test: if it runs off as soon as it grows hair without taking at least 1 food from ur farm or a basket it will die in approx 4 minutes

If it starts temp running to look around camp before it can hold an item and is back at spot you put it way before starving => will last till old age.

Steps on its own out of crowded spot/campfire before saying F => same.

startafight wrote:

the "follow" test: u pick up ur basket n tell baby to follow. it follows and stops moving immediately after u stop moving instead of coming back to u. it will survive to at least 7

If it first moves to perfect temp spot, stops there for a second and goes temp running after you without stopping => will live to old age.

startafight wrote:

the "where" test: after its grown it asks "where rabbit?" "where water?" it will survive at least to 9

WTR, SOI L?, RBT, CAR RTS, CMP ST? when it can type only three letters => give it a backpack if you can. That's you next smith/shepherd/carpenter, whatever will be needed.

Yeah, I think a lot of my problem is I hate suiciding. It feels like giving up, or cheating, or something. I always want to try to make a go of it, whatever hand I'm dealt.  To me, the randomless of where you spawn seems like part of the fun of the game, but I suspect you're right, and knowing when not to bother with an Eve run is just part of the strategy.

I know what you mean.   I sometimes do the same and just try to do the best I can with what I got.  Especially when I'm born as Eve's child at misplaced camp.  I just don't expect for this camps to last long.  I treat it more like kata exercise - to hone my skills in really bad place.  Whatever I learn helps later a lot when things get tough for a while at good spot.

Maybe some expert can chip in.  West, what do you do to get to the double digit gens so consistently?

I think you're just trying too hard.  I did the same things as you and had similar results.  I finally did double-digit gens as Eve when I changed my approach a little.  What worked for me is to search for spot for like 5 minutes max.  Not found anything promising => suicide and next Eve run, hopefully in better location.  RNG is sometimes a bitch.  And you cannot run for too long as the risk of not having surviving daughters later is just too high.

For that we need Jason to implement putting children into boxes as for now I cannot think of a way to take people out of any kind of prison in the game.

Double/airlock doors.  Ask one kid to go into airlock section.  If more enter it - stab them.

Also someone created a mod to be able to change server on the login page, you can search for it on the forum.

You can change it now in official client - just click Settings.

Just short question to Jason:
With all the optimization work, do you also profile wall clock time, or only CPU time?  Worth checking with cold cache to ensure that I/O wait times won't be a significant issue.

Thanks, I wasn't lonely, 'cause I was busy.  I wanted to make my first apron.  And I thought that I need two sweaters for that, so it took me a while.  Turns out I mixed it up with instructions for making chief's hat wink

#113 Re: Main Forum » A prison » 2018-07-21 00:13:56

Awesome!  Slightly bigger and we can have milkweed plantation.  There where some volunteers IIRC...

I supposed it to be so, but you wrote in your optimization notes:

I sympathize, I've had the game make changes I don't approve of as well, but that's the beauty of it. It's not your game or my game, we're just along for the ride.

Actually I think that it's more true about other games than OHOL.  Here we DO have a significant impact on where the game is going.  We obviously don't have control, but still we are part of development cycle, with all the discussions, etc.  That's pretty unique.

FeignedSanity wrote:

But I can't sympathize with your desires, all those things are stuff you do when you have nothing better to do. You've taken care of survival and are just sitting on your bear skin rug in your mansion. What now? Guess I'll fight a war or watch some sports.

Oh, you misunderstood me.  I don't intend for those things to be done, because we're bored.  At least not all of them.  Warfare and/or trade with other towns should be mandatory at some development level.  You simply should not be able to progress without having trade routes or conquering other towns.  And the choice shouldn't be obvious, there should be tradeoffs.  It's still survival, but with bigger, better problems to solve.  We already desperately need money and a way to track ownership at low level to manage towns better.

And games... We have games IRL and they serve no practical purpose.  Well, really?  People are having fun.  And people involved are making money out of it.  OHOL is a civ simulation, so we may see it emerge here too.  Sometimes I play OHOL as min/max game and I'm annoyed AF at all people roleplaying.  And sometimes I'm roleplaying myself and I'm annoyed AF by all people min/maxing and scolding me for roleplaying.  So maybe games have plece here after all.  We can get well earning gladiators this way, that can later fund great projects.

FeignedSanity wrote:

I would also recommend you take a look at 2HOL, seems like it'd be up your alley.

Thanks, but how many player are there at the peak?  I don't want to play another Minecraft.

But it's great once you get going, You also get alot more respect doing this job then you would for something like farming. It's almost like your own business when people come to you requesting tools and the occasional payment of food.

Shepherding is probably second favorite, like smithing it's annoying when people mess with you. You also need a knife or someone else with a knife helping you, If your lucky someone will give you one but nost people won't trust you.

Proper spacing is important I've seen too many crammed towns then clutter builds up and everyone stands in your way as you do stuff. Also the knife problem if it's not in the hands of someone responsible it's killing someone but the shepherds suffer because of trolls and fear of trolls. Even the though the trolls are much less common these days.

Wow.  First person admitting that curse system did its job right.

Please send replay to Jason.

If you don't know how:
In game directory there is "recordedGames" folder with all games played.  Try to locate the correct one by date/time.  Copy it to "playbackGame" folder and start the game - you will see replay of everything that happend.  If you found correct replay, note down % of time in top left corner, when bug happens.  Mail it to Jason.  Should be fixed soon.  Move the file away or delete it from "playbackGame" folder to play normally.

There shouldn't be any cooldown for few first searches in a row.  E.g. I want to add link to relevant post, but don't remember the exact phrase - now I just give up, as it takes way to much time to find.

I suppose that depends on who you ask, I think the decay update was a great idea (aside from baskets). And there were a lot of players that weren't happy during the "pre-apocalypse level happy" phase. Sure, the minecraft kids loved it and inevitably threw a fit when it was implemented, but quite a few enjoyed the game more after the apocalypse.

I watched pre-apocalypse play-throughs.  Then bought the game after apocalypse and at the beginning of massive nerfs, decay, map wipes.  So you could imagine the dissapointment.  All nice towns dissapeared and they have not rebounded since.

I want to see warfare, trade, penguin hockey arenas, prisons, etc.  But they ain't gonna happen without sustainable towns.  And they are not possible now, with decay combined with map wipes and low server caps:
https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=2881

Hopefully with perfomance fixes we can get closer to it.  Next thing is to get rid of map wipes (or extend them A LOT), so we can build those damn roads.
