I would really prefer this never gets added. The strongest and cheapest defensive walls only work with diagonal reach disabled.

Build stone floors. Damaged mallets can be converted into shoes and damaged chisels can be used at the diesel mine. Stone walls and floors are basically all profit with very little waste.

#153 Re: Main Forum » Why Everything Runs Out is Boring » 2020-12-04 00:40:10

Yea i wouldnt say diesel is a super easy way to get water. Especially compared to deep well. When moving a family its better to go ahead of the family, scout out the spot, and built up the area before they move in. Much like pein has done in the past. Its far easier to build up a solid town without the demand of an entire family.

Going back to oil being easy. It sure is later in game, but it does require a lot of prep and a lot of resources. The tanks alone are 24 iron, plus a blade, and god knows how many pipes. The first time you drill its insanely expensive with little reward. So in a way oil kind of pays itself forward in later runs. Its especially important that gingers remain rich with it and rich in iron. All it takes is one over generous family member and its back to ground zero.

Cloth. Always cloth. They dont decay.

#155 Re: Main Forum » Why Everything Runs Out is Boring » 2020-12-03 19:48:59

I dont necessarily think infinite resources or harshly depleting resources are good. I dont think the game is at either of those poles in its current state. In fact with how oil is structured i think we are on the more infinite end of things. The issue i see more is stability. Its not resources that we run out of too quickly, its towns. Towns and families are forced westward in order to survive. Too far of a distance from the other families is a death sentence. This disables towns from reaching their full potential and the constant need to shuffle resources west wastes valuable time while leaving behind an obscene amount of work. What you end up seeing is a trail of half built towns. Gingers have it worst, despite being the strongest family in terms of resource strength. Oil tapping out pushes them west more than anyone, and its easy to presume everything east of a ginger town is tapped. Often a decently long ginger lineage has cleared 1-3k west of their original site. This forces a ginger eve to move even further west to find a fresh area. God forbid they settle in a already tapped zone. That pressure west is the biggest killer and disables any form of stability in a town or family. It seriously needs to be adjusted. Banding has made drilling oil easier but it has also made the westward movement even more aggressive. Moving 1-3k a day is not good.

#156 Re: Main Forum » Why Everything Runs Out is Boring » 2020-12-03 17:56:10

Im sorry coco but player influence has next to nothing to do with average length. It doesnt matter how many pros play. It has to do with how the game is structured around families. We do have an influence on how short a lineage can be but that takes a calculated effort to sabotage the family's success. After a certain point the game does it for us.

Its just how it is.

#157 Re: Main Forum » viable homebase » 2020-12-03 16:21:12

Yea this was my main concern with the addition of banding. Before banding, a "good spot" was one with each of the specialist biomes relatively close, at least one iron vein, a decent starter swamp, and plenty of green zone trees. Now its really only, is there iron, is there a swamp, and maybe a relatively decent green zone.

Scouting out spots and finding that "golden zone" used to be my favorite thing to do. You would think having less factors involved would make that easier but it hasnt seemed like the case. Every spot is kinda "ok" since banding was added. Hard to find an awful spot but just as hard to find a good spot.

That being said spots are dependent on where you are in progression. A spot that's excellent for early game might be terrible for late game and a spot that's perfect for late game might be too difficult to manage in the early game. I am of the mind that any spot that has the shortest distance between a well and an iron vein is good. That way a forge can be built close to the vein while still being close to town.

Surviving 5 generations is not a challenge, but if your family could survive 200 generations and more, it's satisfying that you were part of this achievement. http://onehouronelife.com shows that longest family line survived 813 generations, why don't you try to beat it?

To me infinite resources are more boring. It's like playing with cheats... We can not care what we do with water, we can waste it whatever we like as long as someone is getting new water, and there is always more water in an infinite world. Isn't it boring?

If we had no server resets it could be possible to survive even 100000 generations in an infinite world like we have rn.

But yeah, this game is hard and people can't make it that far. It's actually sad that longest family line this week had only 63 generations...
It's very likely that incoming update will change it tho.

First of all, there is no "beating" that record. Lineage length has next to nothing to do with players. It has to do with how jason structures spawns. Over the years youll notice dramatic shifts in lineage length after some adjustment to spawns. It used to be next to impossible to break 100, then after a change people hit 300 right after the update. Not sure what enabled the 800+ lineage but i know for a fact it wasnt player effort. Jason is the only person who can actually change the lineage length and has adjusted things many times to get the average where he wants it. The short generations this week are likely due to the player influx.

#159 Re: Main Forum » Why Everything Runs Out is Boring » 2020-12-03 02:36:33

At least the box of death gave us 300+ lineages and actually promoted resource management and hoarding. As well as not necessarily knowing how it ended. An update in the rift did kill families but it didnt kill the towns or the work people put in pre update. Now towns are lost in a day or so and hundreds of hours of work are left behind in each of them.

You had people fighting to keep families alive and people fighting to end the arc. The eve window was always an interesting time to play as well. The only problem i saw in the rift was it being to small but it was always interesting seeing what people built and how the towns and families developed throughout the arc. Everything is hollow now. Families are only as important as their utility and only distinguished by their race. There is no personality there is no culture, no history, no legacy. Nothing runs out, we just move across the land like locusts eating up everything as we go. Families die and are immediately replaced. There is no weight to their death, no reason to prevent that death and no reason to invest time into something that will be dust in the wind in no time.

Certainly would be an interesting mechanic and would likely give players who enjoy the more violent end of the game something to do. Though i think the combat mechanics of this game would need some serious adjustments to make something like that enjoyable.

#162 Re: Main Forum » One Noticeable Person on the Leaderboard » 2020-12-01 21:00:57

I know for a fact the person supplying 70% of the server's oil was recently cursed to donkey town for abusing the /die feature. Sometimes people do have to sacrifice themselves so others can live a prosperous life.

Never said the server would die lol. By keeping the server alive i mean keeping all the active towns and families alive. Jobs bigger than just supplying your own town with pies and carrots. But creating enough resources to supply the entire server with iron and water. Those things cant be done simply by chance and they do require you to exploit the /die feature if you want to get it done without wasting time.

Something like white roses for example, not essential to the server but probably my favorite thing to do when I play bs2, demands that you /die to be ginger to even get it done. The risk of losing that window is too high to go about it any other way.

#163 Re: Main Forum » Coming soon: get reborn to your descendants after living to old age » 2020-12-01 19:49:37

I honestly dont see wars and alliances happening while race restrictions are active. Killing or hurting another family is only going to damage your own family's survivability. In the past killing or stealing in another family did nothing to harm your own and often your family could either resettle the new town or take the spoils of war back home. This is now impossible with race restrictions and the homeland mechanic. Outsiders are no longer viewed as threats and towns do nothing to defend themselves.

#164 Re: Main Forum » Dear people, » 2020-12-01 19:30:34

No need to knit pick. We all have issues and opinions about each other. If we didnt there would be something wrong. Its just part of being human to agree and disagree, argue and hold grudges. That being said i dont think personal problems with individuals are an appropriate subject to discuss on the forums. We all make mistakes, we all can misinterpret things, and we can all be a bit bull headed sometimes. The important thing is not to let it get in the way of the goal of these forums. To discuss and work through concepts, ideas, and thoughts. Sure things can get disruptive sometimes but in those moments its best to try and steer things back on track rather than promote an argument. Rabbit holes can be fun but ones that lead no where and just upset people would be best to avoid.

#165 Re: Main Forum » Dear people, » 2020-12-01 18:47:15

Im more of the mindset to call someone's ideas or actions bad but not the person themselves. Though i prefer to explain my interpretation of the concept and why i think its bad instead of just calling it bad or telling the person they are bad for thinking it. If the individual has more points to justify their view all the better. Discourse and criticism only strengthens the resolve behind a thought and filters it into something more effective and marketable.

The whole point of these forums is to facilitate discourse. Sure it can get heated and sometimes folks resort to name calling and etc when they get frustrated but i agree we should have compassion for each other and do our best to foster ideas and the discussion surrounding them.

#166 Re: Main Forum » One Noticeable Person on the Leaderboard » 2020-12-01 16:47:54

Who are we to say what the spirit of the game is? If jason wanted everyone playing for an hour he wouldn't make it so easy to die. Most new players dont hit 60 early on so are they not playing in the spirit of the game? 60 is just a life limit, one hour one life is just a reference to the maximum amount you can play per life, its not a suggestion or a demand. Some people dont want to play for a whole hour. Who cares if they die early or get busy and have to leave. Oh right, selfish people who want to waste food on afkers because they're obsessed with a stupid leaderboard number that means next to nothing.

In my eyes the spirit of the game is to survive. Nothing more nothing less. If someone has to abuse a mechanic to help the entire server survive we should be thanking them. Not punishing them. Most tech is race locked and there are a lot of people who dont enjoy wasting hours of their lives dicking around in the hopes they draw the race they want next life. Dying when you want allows you to maximize what you do in a short amount of time. Its far from griefing. Though villianizing those people and trying to get them punished for being efficient with their time is closer to that definition.

#167 Re: Main Forum » One Noticeable Person on the Leaderboard » 2020-12-01 14:46:09

/dying is the only way to combat race restrictions. Not sure why you stalked this random leaderboard name and made this post. How about instead of punishing people more for using the /die feature, we stop punishing the moms who have them by leaving behind bones.

Im not sure what you're on about with wanting a more severe punishment. It sounds an awful lot like you want tool slots back if thats the case...

Who honestly cares about fitness score? Its a clunky, exploitable, and boring system with almost no reward for jumping through its hoops. Get to be leader, get to be eve? Leadership is annoying and being an eve isnt what it used to be. Instead of needing to do everything right in your eve run to even give your family a chance at succeeding, you have to do practically everything wrong in order to give your family a chance at failing.

Plus /dying gives you a high chance of being cursed by moms and can get you put in donkeytown, not sure there is a need for a harsher punishment. But i do feel its dumb since people are being put in dt just by using a harmless mechanic built into the game.

If I'm playing One Hour One Life, I'm gonna play for a damn hour.  And then if I don't want to keep playing, I'll stop.  *shrug*

Honestly, the thought of deliberately dying early puts me off quite badly.  (And the thought of my kids deliberately dying on me is unpleasant, too.  I do care about them!  I want them to live to 60!  I always feel like I've succeeded if I look at the family tree and see that they did.)

But I think I've maybe always been an outlier on this one, anyway.  The only times I've ever used /die is when I'm born and my mom immediately starts spewing racist garbage at me, and if I hate the town I'm in, I'll usually just leave, instead of going out and feeding myself to a wolf or something.

Before biome restrictions i would be inclined to agree. Only real reason to /die was to cycle back to a family you really wanted go play in again. But with certain tech locked behind different races sometimes you have to /die to get certain things done. Take for example white roses and dying them. After a wild rose seed is cut from a hip you have to wait over two hours before its white and have exactly one hour to stratify and plant them. Gingers are the only ones who can stratify roses. This isnt even taking into account if you wanted to dye them. Blue dyes are not race locked. But if you wanted green black, and yellow roses you would likely need to live a life as a jungle specialist to prep. Most people who are dying early are not trying to piss people off or be selfish, but actually get some of the more difficult race locked things done. Like oil and etc.

#169 Re: Main Forum » Coming soon: get reborn to your descendants after living to old age » 2020-11-30 20:02:11

Totally agree dodge. Raiding and stealing will not happen as long as families are symbiotic. Trading resources does sorta happen. But its basically just people dumping resources from their family onto other families on the server. There isnt really a purpose behind hoarding and etc given the fact that if one family isnt successful the remaining families cannot be successful. Besides gingers who can survive without the other families comfortably once late game is reached. Also with the map banding, trading is pretty difficult since you have to travel to the family you need resources from first to even know what they want in return, then travel a fair distance just to get it, travel back, then travel home. With the spawns spreading families out this process could take most of your life. Plus communication is insanely difficult and many people won't give you the time of day, even with paper, pencil, and rubber ball. And just taking what you need can result in being killed or cursed.

#171 Re: Main Forum » Newb Baby booms! Jason please read » 2020-11-30 13:54:04

I think a good way to balance this with the new spawn change at 60 would be to have a buffer. Basically lets say the total cap is 20, spawns would be pushed to other families if the population hits 15. This way it would leave room for folks who lived to 60 and wanted to spawn back into that same family. Only locking them out if all of the buffer space was filled by others who used the old age respawn mechanic.

Should exile count as well?

Why would this ever happen? Honestly feels like knit picking when there is nothing to knit pick. I have respawned to my own kids and grand kids a number of times and only recieved excitement and thrill from my family members. Griefers hardly live to 60 and this will likely strengthen the curse protection surrounding individual families.

As much as saying goodbye might not carry the same weight as it used to, saying hello again will. It will create a stronger sense of community and collective drive to better the family you chose to use this mechanic for.

If you dont like this mechanic nothing is stopping you from dying at 59.

#173 Re: Main Forum » Newb Baby booms! Jason please read » 2020-11-30 10:56:28

The problem with the mother cap is it only stabilizes the responsibility of each mom. It however does nothing for the stability of the family or town. Lets say two mothers have four babies each, they all live to birthing age. Then all 8 of those kids have 4 babies. A 3rd generation camp from a fresh eve has no chance of supporting 40 people. This isnt likely to happen given males would likely be born among those 8. But you can see how it can snowball quickly without some type of cap. Especially with population spikes.

Yeet is more commonly used in the sense of throwing something away or getting rid of it. So in regards to "spoonwood yeeting posts" it doesnt quite fit. But the rest of the examples do. Though yeetin in the streets would be more like littering.
