couldnt you buff convection/nerf fires instead?

this change is good but do we need another system? what if entire villages are walled?

#177 Re: Main Forum » If fences are not viable, what does that mean? » 2019-05-21 02:21:19

Fences are stupid AF because unlike buildings they arent meant to insulate. Warfare and property rights are far less relevant than temperature in this game and buildings also suck at insulating.

let fences die and fix buildings.

Listen up, Im not saying we need all biomes to be liveable, to be very meta or to have entire techtrees of their own.
But shouldnt there be at least a few unorthodox good combos?

After water upgrade most biomes are inhabitable long term but grasslands are also better than ever. Can't we have some early and late game incentives to live elsewhere?

For early game we need rope, soil, branches at the very least. Vines for rope is an ancient suggestion, and fits jungle/swamp.

Oil tech makes snow/desert desireable, rubber the same for jungles. Biomes with large amounts of wood could be used for new storage items. Mine upgrades pushes badlands meta.

I feel like all this has been said already so please, can we all push biome improvements? There's been a lot of emphasis in spawn mechanics but not so much in the world itself.

it wiil at the very least cause genuine conflict and metas to evolve faster. Scarcity is needed to decrease survivability, making selection both of villages and metas much harder.

This allows the optimal stage of gameplay in which we have needs and jason designs stuff for us to fix those.

Dont think modern trade, think a little struggle for survival is needed.

#180 Re: Main Forum » New Eve placement » 2019-05-17 01:43:38

Honestly, iron should run out. I'd at least like to see this being tested.

Though mine upgrades are indeed needed.

This increases the viability for each spring, giving every one at least a chance at being a home.

I mean, we just need rope and branches to spawn elsewhere

And soil, at the very least. An early civ literally cannot survive without soil, and a vast majority want it close enough that you don't have to spend 5 minutes running abck and forth per basket.

Saplings are necessary for early planting if you don't have enough milkweed for a stone hoe [which is a waste anyways when there's saplings nearby]. Berry bushes are necessary for the seeds to plant your own. Though I suppose it wouldn't be nearly as bad as it would be with soil, which you need to run back and forth for repeatedly..

i'd argue that with sheep you can skip soil but that takes berries.

As far as seeds go a village could do well for a while with popcorn/bread/carrots/pies

so ill say rope, branches, soil and water must be somewhat widespread

#183 Re: Main Forum » [Discussion] A look back on "the Property Update" and Trade... » 2019-05-16 20:05:09

Amazing post, I hope Jason reads it.

Some of these issues are easily solveable, specially resource contention. There are heaps of suggestions concerning quality of life/storage tech, its a shame this isnt explored more often. Logs, for example, become way more valuable if furniture exists.
Decay has also been a common suggestion.

Honestly, I've no more to add since we arent looking at solutions.

Seriously Jason, if you're gonna force us to spawn at the same spring over and over again, then for god's sake do something to give them all at least a chance at being viable. We're sitting at the same exact problem we had when it was ponds and not springs that turned into wells: A village has to be at a specific biome mix [grassland+swamp] or else it's not getting past gen 2.

You need to reduce our need for ponds by giving us the ability to bootstrap until iron automatically, regardless of the spring placement. It's as simple as giving the spring some water usage before wells, like Ponds used to be. Alternately, you could force 2-3 ponds to spawn near every spring, but that would get messy quickly I think..

However, reducing our need for the grassland biome isn't possible without some major changes in spawning locations for a lot of necessary items [milkweed, the assorted branch trees, early foods+seeds, saplings, soil]. So simple solution is just to push springs to only spawn in these biomes. Give every spring at least a decent chance at being viable this way, instead of the foolish notion of forcing people to spawn in unviable locations time and time again thinking it'll improve gameplay.

#190 Re: Main Forum » What if we force Eve to get real... » 2019-05-16 01:11:39

Tarr is definitely onto something, biomes shouldnt even be all liveable but making at least a few of the combos better would greatly improve eveing.

#191 Re: Main Forum » The benefits of wars/trade? » 2019-05-16 01:06:13

having bigger, slightly more liveable biomes is the way to go

If you want the players to play the hand their dealt you can't deal them a terrible hand and make folding so easy. This is the easy choice. As people have suggested making an Eve token system based off something means people would try their hardest to survive if there was something at stakes. However, this still means you have the issue of terrible spawns and good spawns which means even the most skillful Eve will die to a terrible spot either due to bad biome mixes or players just refusing to stay with an Eve.

The hard choice is to make more biomes actually livable. Putting in the work to make it so places other than the two meta choices are at least somewhat livable. This means whenever a spring spawns somewhere the Eve has an actual chance to thrive instead of handing out unwinnable situations 90% of the time and telling the players to prove you wrong. Resource bleed (things having a main and secondary biome spawn), new clothing options (something that makes hot biomes livable just like we have clothes to make cold biomes easier), or some other idea.

yes

#194 Re: Main Forum » An observation » 2019-05-15 03:15:30

as usual, i agree very much with tarr

Language and fences feel extremely forced and unfun to me, not because the game is harder/changed/more complex/not my thing, but because it feels like you got stuck in a loop of "how to make people care?" that leads nowhere and are quickly making these as you go. At the same time we're begging you for simple additions and tweaks that are hard to get to you (milk was bugged for months, there's 10+ posts asking for tech storage in reddit, buildings are uneeded/not useful in cold biomes).

To me every time you add a fence or sword you're effectively making me play another week with incomplete supposedly vital features. It gets boring after a while, specially if im busy irl.

Additionally, we've all been reading a lot of game design articles/ interacting with devs, Maybe people are just slightly more game literate?

#196 Re: Main Forum » Food Efficiency Ranking » 2019-05-14 20:08:35

yes spoon, but you also cant reset wild foods at will.

we keep saying meat pies are cheap because meat and wheat end up pilling in any city. Mutton is a freebie when you compost and rabbit fur is always needed for clothes/bags.

mutton pies, rabbit pies and bread should be easily available few gens in. Tbh, even carrot pies pre-sheep might be a good food if you're low on rabbits. The idea is that making few good foods en masse is faster and cheaper. Wild foods can be massed after a lot of gathering but few offer actual benefits for such (grinding wildberry gives food, grinding rabbits gives food + fur).

#198 Re: Main Forum » Am i the only one here? » 2019-05-14 19:45:49

we complain because the game needs balance more than crazy features

No one is saying a word on how common is ground iron after water changes. And we wonder why engines are being rushed so fast.

Is "never eat carrots regardless of your age because they're better used for something else" still part of the meta?

I can't remember when I learned this one (I think from a youtube video, somebody got stabbed lol), but I just wanted to check!

Also are potatoes good or bad? XD (yes, I have to ask lol)

this is more a rule of thumb than an absolute efficient strat. Resource-wise carrots aren't great food because of the tilling cost, however you should be growing a few carrots as an eve for the fast output they offer (and few tills wont kill you)

We get one great update and come right back to this kinda stuff. This quest for depth is turning the game in what it was becoming pre-steam, a mesh of useless features. Photographs as a way to increase investiment in a life/line? Fences as a way to push trade? We got crowns and clutter instead.

People won't war or trade, they'll discord. I bet that'll make the game much more immersive.

Worst part is that it'll rarely matter and when it does it'll confuse less invested players.
