i tell you why i /die

because i am fed up with being a female in this game !

#302 Re: Main Forum » for the last time shearing that last sheep » 2019-03-13 16:52:20

if the pen is cluttered then
take a shovel, move poo outside
take a basket move bones outside
take shears, shear sheep, move wool outside
take a cart, load four bowls with berries & carrot & feed the sheep

or maybe even enlarge the pen, so it's no more cluttered ?

if there are too many people working in one workplace, find something else to do
if you don't want to, kill the others

btw
i am still waiting for a comback of use for the worms
i hope it won't be just tequila lol

There really isn't an ideal layout for town. I remember a long time ago, a group made a huge town that at one point had what seemed like 20+ people in it and they made what they thought was a perfect layout but random people kept messing everything up so they all went insane and started killing everyone.

The lesson is that people are going to mess up the layout no matter what you do. They will grow bushes all over place, start farming all over the place, build extra forges and ovens because they didn't notice the other one already there like two screens away. Have a pen for sheep and you might end up with pigs in it, a pen for cows might end up being used for wheat. You are growing carrots one minute, then the next you are growing squash.

So I wouldn't worry about having it look pretty or messing it up. Just consider where you want to go. If people run back and forth between area's often, then a road is a good idea. Roads between water sources and the farm is a great start. Then expand as is needed. Having some roads early seem to help, because otherwise everyone will build stuff all cramped together.

i don't agree

there surely isn't "the" ideal layout but things work in OHOL in a certain way & therefore some layouts work while other don't

if people mess with a place but the main layout is practical, then it will be cleaned up again
if people mess with a bad layout, then there is a reason, it doesn't work for them
just because a group of people, maybe even discord coordinated thought out their perfect layout doesn't mean it actually was

when i ask about an ideal or perfect layout, i ask for practical, hands on experiences people made in game, that's the best you can get, because grown in the lives they lived
the life is short in OHOL, you have to function & don't waste your precious time with any mess & atm, nearly all towns are a mess regarding functionality

if there is an ideal layout, doesn't mean that every town will look the same, but some things work in certain way in OHOL & that defines the problems & their solutions

& i asked for some thoughts, such as was mentioned, like

Roads that are three spaces away from berry farms are ideal.

Roads are better above a smith than below.

&

An early road out of town goes a long way to encouraging a graveyard to be built further out, rather than having it crowding a growing town.

those are useful & very practical ideas, which will probably prove themselves in game over & over again as belonging to the ideal layout
i know that because i am thinking about that layout for months now & was collecting ideas in all the runs i've been playing & paying attention to how workspaces built certain way were working in game & which didn't & why

i wrote that already several times but i encountered once a town which had a main crossroads through the town, north-south & east-west, as far i recall both were quite straight lines
this was the best town layout i ever experienced, because one could orientate oneself easily & get from one part of the town to another very fast,
even if you were not on that road, you knew it was there & you could go back to it to get to the other side of the town fast if you needed

if i ever build my perfect layout, it will have such a crossroads, that's for sure

i also know some no-nos, because i experienced their negative effects in game, like
road next to any workplace, wall directly above or one tile above an oven/kiln, boxes instead of chests next to a workplace, bakeries & nurseries with solid wood doors, giant berry farms with no free spaces among them ...

i have few ideas on my own, also collected, like

* a tree farm, but i don't know what the best layout could be for that,
also it's hard to plant trees, cause the next gen has to have the foresight to water them

* nursery not intereferring with neither bakery nor forge

i've seen some mango tree farms in game, but those have their own problems, need plates & a knife to slice them, very few people know how to handle them or that mango trees produce eadibles at all, so what to do with that ?

i've spawned the last couple of days to two towns which had a sheep pen attached to a bakery, i think this is a genious idea,
but that idea is atm in a larvae state
the one town had blocked the sheep entering the bakery with railroads, which are very hard to make & it didn't have an elegant passage between them two
the other town, with a door to the sheep pen run into the problem, the sheep escaping into the bakery
so that basic idea, which is great, needs some more work to ripe to be functioning well

i have many question about a town's layout, like
how to place the main roads in relation to the ponds ?
where to place the forge, where the bakery, where the pottery ?
how many kilns in a forge ?
where to place the chests belonging to a forge/bakery/pottery
does a newcomen pump need an own kiln ? or is to head for the kerosine pump a better idea ? if so, how fast should it happen ? & if so, how to connect it in an elegant way to a kerosine source, how to design that one ?
if newcomen pump, then where to store water ?
should a town have a main fire in the middle or not ?
where to place the hospital ?
where to store wood & kindling ?
...

& also important to be mentioned
players using the zoom mod have a totally different gameplay experience than vanilla players
i play vanilla, a mess of a town is playing vanilla ten times harder than with the zoom mod, i am in fact losing in game decades of my lives just searching for a round stone or a sharp stone or a basket or a home marker or if there is a milkweed farm or if there are trees nearby or if there are enough plates or if there is a rabbit furs place or if there are enough carrots growing & so on ...

as far i understand OHOL, is that you are a small part of a whole community, this is the experience

though you will meet people in game that become in that short life span, one hour, few minutes, dear enough that you could cry for real when they die
the game is emotionally moving, not every life, many lives are not only meaningless but outright annoying with annoying people around you, but you still will live through lives which will become significant to you & where you will become significant to the others

i think meantime, it would skew the experience of the lives if you knew who you are playing with
skew in a positive & a negative way, you would settle for old friends & old enemies, without such a knowledge, everybody has another chance either to become constructive after a series of lives being obnoxious or to become a villain after a series of lives of a saint big_smile

that's the pure OHOL experience
if you twin, you miss out on that
to twin is a second rate OHOL gameplay imo big_smile

As somebody who has spent many a lifetime building roads in this game, there is a certain art to building them well.  My tips would be as follows:

1) Anytime a road is forked a wooden or flagstone tile should be set at the intersection.  Otherwise, inevitably townsfolk get routed down the exact wrong path they wanted to travel.

2) Roads that are three spaces away from berry farms are ideal.  Why?  1st empty tile is where townsfolk should stand to harvest.  2nd empty tile should either hold spare bowls, spare baskets, dumped dirt, buckets or compost piles.  Then the 3rd tile should be the actual fast travel road.  I also prefer to place a wooden or flagstone tile next to any well location.

3) Keep zigzagging roads to an absolute minimum!  Personally, it gives me motion sickness to see the screen jiggle.  You should have a clear layout of your path in your head before putting the first tile down.  If there is a temporary obstruction like a stump or big rock, skip over it, you can back fill later.

4) Roads are better above a smith than below.  Smith sprawl always seems to go south and roads can be very inconvenient when trying to work.

5) An early road out of town goes a long way to encouraging a graveyard to be built further out, rather than having it crowding a growing town.

6) A well built road that connects all the elements of composting makes that job so much more efficient and keeps everyone well fed to boot.

The_Anabaptist

do you have some ideas about a general ideal town layout ?

i didn't built roads so far because i cannot decide how a layout should look for a town

i recognize one solid obstruction - the ponds, those cannot be moved at all atm,
everything else can be moved eventually
so one has to work with ponds in mind, where & how they are positioned in a town's map

but overall some good tips
do you have more ?

i don't play to collect yum
i play to collect goods for the village

collecting yum-bonus is THE MOST BORING GAME EVER, well, ok, i exaggerate, but it is really a boring game to play tongue

#308 Re: Main Forum » There's nothing fun on the forums right now » 2019-03-13 08:04:46

my current lives are nothing special
one positive is, i am not being killed, very few attempts, so that's a plus
i die often to boars, mosquitos & wolves, too often & at times with a cart, too bad tongue

i am always very happy to see that someone had the foresight to plant a bunch of maple trees & such
but some players are still being quite jerks, like yesterday a female who made about six bowls & six plates
but as i wanted to set out an omeletts spot for all to survive better, she claimed them as "hers", i hope she'll have some miserable lives tongue

i made a small milkweed spot a touch away from the town
for the first time since milkweed has been nerfed
but it's so darn necessary for the carts & often even for the snares
i could have claimed too that milkweed "mine", but nah lol

#309 Re: Main Forum » for the last time shearing that last sheep » 2019-03-13 07:40:25

the solution is simple to what bugs you

born into a town head asap for the sheep, if there are only few, feed the young, so they can multiply
then you don't need to worry that much about the last sheep being shorn

& about other players being unreasonable
two solutions depending on what you prefer :

A) you kill them
B) you ignore them

with time they will either learn or stop playing lol

i was even bitten by a snake in snow tongue

#313 Re: Main Forum » I can't deal with roads anymore. » 2019-03-12 15:02:44

there are some problems with roads

a road next to any workplace is absolutely ANNOYING, no matter if a berry farm or a bakery
a road should NEVER lead directly along any workplace !

roads have to have usefull stop gaps, near any workplace
i've seen one useless stop gap, it was a landing pad for a plane

other than that, roads are great
i wish i had enough time to build them, usually i am too busy with other stuff, especially as female
& i still don't know what a perfect town layout would be, so even if i'd be building roads, i wouldn't build them in a sensible manner

so this is a second time i starved to death literally in seconds because of the combination as stated
temp update + clothing + mosquitos

after the temp update is to head towards fully clothed, the most resonable thing to do
but the mosquito bites are just totally OP when clothed, fully clothed is simply deadly & in seconds, because when bitten, the temp is still at its peek, as it was before the temp update
so if running in the wild, mosquitos are as deadly as boars, snakes & wolves, absolutely no chance of survival because the time is just too short to recover & be able to grab some food

a backpack is not expensive - it's THE most basic thing

this question is useless

i ask it very rarely, to clarify, but usually it's evident
i teach on the fly, just in case, if the player is not new they can say it then, if they are then they can learn right away

it's also pretty quick evident if the mom is a new player or not
i'd say, moms asking me that question are quite new lol

if a male kid is lost then
either the player behind has lots to learn & should utilize that moment to train his lone survival skills
or the place for the base is extremely badly chosen by Eve,
like
been yesterday to such, no food in near proximity, i, a male kid gave up in my thirties because it didn't look like it had any future, should have probably already earlier, as teenager, as i realised that there is no future with this settlement, all female kids died for that reason as well

the map generation had to be improved

the map generation is too random, vast parts are uninhabitable for an Eve, less experienced players are in many areas absolutely not able to found a successful settlement because the areas are just too bad to live there as beginner
i myself don't like to be an Eve at all, it's boring because of all the kids one has to take care of & is extremely hard because of the bad RNG map, especially ruinous if the kids are not hard tested players & an Eve's camp is dependend on skilled male kids

& in general
if a kid is lost in the map, then the player has forgotten rule number 1 - set the home marker ! big_smile

#319 Re: Main Forum » Some interesting statistics » 2019-03-11 08:52:34

Death by hunger: 72.88%

that's why i am constantly hunting rabbits now, life after life
& if i can get hands on seals, that's a jackpot for everybody
clothing is underrated still, the hunger goes rapidly down if fully clothed
& i am very happy to see now many running with shoes also, i always missed to see shoes before the temp update, it felt like a waste,
now not anymore
both shoes lower the hunger by 17%

#320 Re: Main Forum » I have seen the perfect town » 2019-03-11 08:39:15

i've never been to a town which would have been well running, sorry

i've been once to a town with one huge crossroads going through it, north-south & east-west, that was the best i've seen, they had kerosine in far south, wood in west

i've seen some patches in towns which were a good foresight, like planted tree area, once even someone was intelligent enough to plant all sorts of trees but didn't manage to plant juniper, so i wanted to make that, but never came back to do it because the town was lacking in the other, more pressing areas

every town has the same difficulties now - backpacks, clothing, compost, plates, bowls, tools, carts - lacking town layout
very few manage to get behind one of those problems, like managing well the compost cycle or the clothing
but since the temp update i was to no town that would have been comfortable to live in, i am constantly pressed to either compost, get rabbits or get clay for plates & those lives are already the better ones, cause at least productive

also with the rooms now built often i've been to some towns where those are just either badly planned or badly built, because either too small or too big or with those problematic doors or have no nursery which makes then the bakery or the forge to a semi nursery hindering the production of necessities

been once to a town with both : a bakery & a nursery !!!, where i could direct the mothers away from the bakery fire to the nursery & tell them they should make fire there, cause they didn't have it

& it still is a huge problem, that a pottery has to share space with a forge, if there is a forge, then plates & bowls get rarely done because players prefer to smith & not do claywork

i am trying to find out how a perfect layout of a town would be, so far didn't succeed at it
the basic chores just stand in the way

i am also trying to do as much useful things as possible but as IRL, everybody there has to participate in that endevour, it doesn't work as a singleplayer
i am realising life after that i am only one person & if the others are useless, then the town will falter, i alone can't save it
a well running town is a result of a multipersonal effort, that lesson is loud & clear, i hope more players will realise that & instead to grief or just stand asking what to do they start learning by watching, many things i know i have learned by looking how others have done it
the power of observation in this game is still highly underrated

#321 Re: Main Forum » The best CLOTHING for best TEMP! » 2019-03-10 17:49:32

i though always the wolf hat is more decorative
i am rather into the practical things first
so it's great, that both sides meet

in the end i wish we had more clothing options
more furs, leather, clothing that alleviates the heat from deserts & jungles also
we all know, full fur clothing in a desert or jungle would be deadly IRL, not insulating lol

some numbers

Wolf Hat                 22.5%
Sealskin Coat          31.5%
Rabbit Fur Loincloth 17%
2 Rabbit Fur Shoes  17%
backpack                  5%
----------------------------
insulation                93%

The Eve spiral goes round and round, and as it comes back around, it may intersect with where people have actually set up a city.

I heard that people were using multiple lineages in the same city as a way to keep working on their projects life after life.  This is not good.  That is not the point of the game. The point of the game is passing on what you worked on when you die!  That is pretty much the only point of this game.  Otherwise, it would just be 2D Minecraft.

Also, apparently, griefers were using this to come back again after being murdered.

Now, maybe the distance-based lineage ban is too large.  It probably shouldn't be larger that the "hop" on the eve spiral.  It's the weekend, and I can't look at this now.  Can someone check the code and server settings?  What is the current eve sprial spacing, and what is the current lineage ban spacing?  Do they make sense together?

If not, please post an Issue on github, and I will fix it next week.

thank you for the clarification what the meta goal of the game is

i played for some time the game The Trail
in the beginning it's lot of fun if you're into traveling around, crafting, trading & skilling up
it's nearly a nomad's life & there is some multiplayer in it
but then the next thing is to settle in town, the things crumbled from there for that game
it was neither fun nor made it any sense anymore
but the worst part was, i was unable to go back to the traveling mode, the game is as well designed with the goal to settle for good

but i prefer to travel, to wander around
if OHOL ever gets to a state with trade, music & painting, then i will be a traveling trader playing an instrument & painting on the go
that will be my finest sort of life

& to entertain oc, as IRL big_smile
