But here is the problem, and I think your post helped make it more clear:

What is failing or succeeding?

To the normal player, succeeding is surviving, building civilization, leaving the place a better place to work in for your kids and grand kids.

A normal player might maybe decide that the only right thing to do was wage war on a different clan and steal their resources in order to ensure survival, in order to succeed.

But to a griefer, succeeding is none of these things.

The ordinary griefer will be born into a town, if they can they will kill the last female, perhaps stay to see that everone dies out, and then they will not rebuild the town and ensure that their kids and grand kids are better off. The griefer will, when there's nobody around to harass, suicide and be born into a different town.

The griefer plays outside of what the intention of the game mechanics is.

What to us is SUCCEEDING is to the griefer FAILING, and what to the griefer is SUCCEEDING is to us FAILING.

This is bug, not a feature.

And of course, the griefer will use the new game mechanics and wreak havoc on towns that are not his family's, but they will not do so to ensure the survival of their own family. They'll do it because they're playing a different game than the rest of us.

What Jason really means to say I think, although he hasn't come around to seeing it that way yet, is that "some conflict is necessary", and there I agree.

But griefing is an entirely different beast.

And trust me, even if we managed to remove all griefers from the game, there would still be conflict. There would still be people who were viewed by others as griefers, people who are not really griefers in the strictest sense, because their goal is survival even if the others don't see it. Those are the people Jason is thinking of, I think. Not the trolls.

Winters? One year out of sixty winter destroys all food left outside, destroys crops (but not seeds) and drops your temperature even if you're wearing clothes or near a fire outside. So we work to create safe spaces before winter comes. We don't need snow covering everything during winter, perhaps a few snow flakes could drift across the screen while the food is destroyed.

Fences - Would it be possible for one hit with the rock to repair an area of fences, say all fences within a radius of three tiles?

And I like the "usefulness"-approach overall.

How to make dogs useful:
When given the command "find axe", they run in front of you to the nearest axe. Extremely useful.

How to make walls useful:
A shelf that has to be placed on a wall.

How to make doors useful:
Springy doors open automatically, and the pathfinding is not aware of them at all, but finds the way through a closed springy door.

How to make civilization useful:
Civilization is not only needed to survive, it makes surviving easier. Like in Stardew Valley, when upgrading your tools and building sprinklers make farming a lot easier.

Cameras are fun. I suspect they might be in use more if it was easier to find the ingredients for photo paper. My sister showed me how to use it in one life, I spent my whole life searching for electrum, we took a few pictures, and I've never used the camera again.

When it comes to the fun things in general, we will do them if and only if we have an abundance of food and clothes. In an abundant town where we don't risk starving to death (or be killed by random griefers whether insiders or outsiders), we are free to play around with the non-useful toys. But that requires that at some point in the tech level, surviving is no longer the main challenge. When the town is always at the risk of dying, there's no time for hobbies.

As for races, even though I see the value of having different families of one race only, it still does tingle my 'political correctness' sense. It seems a little off in 2019 to implement something like this. Now I don't think anyone should be limited by political correctness, but at least be aware why this might be an issue and seem of poor taste to some.

A solution, which I don't think is a good solution, is to let families start giving birth to different skin colors than their own if they are exposed to other families of that race. But it can perhaps seem a little "rapey", another political correctness issue...

Personally I'm fine with how it is, I would be fine with a change like this, and I was fine with how it used to be.

This does bother me a little. If someone is annoying on purpose, like babies whistling without stop, the only way to stop them is to kill them. It's too harsh a punishment for too small a crime.

And yes, we're not actually killing people, we're just helping them relocate to a different place... but if we unlike griefers are immersed in the world, then killing becomes a psychological barrier to climb.

(It is one of the reasons griefers have an advantage. The other being that you have to kill a lot to get good enough to be able to deal with some griefers. But if the game is not about killing for you, you'll never reach that level.)

... Waging war could work like this:

You have a war sword. It can't be used against anyone.
But then a person from a different family kills someone in your family with bow or knife. They can still not kill you with war swords, but you can attack anyone in their family with yours. You can wipe out their entire clan if you wish.
But, the moment you kill someone from their family with your war sword, now their war swords are activated, and they can kill anyone from your family.

There could be a note on the screen of every family member: "Currently at war with the Johnsons."

What if you had to wage war before the magic sword would work?
And if the families through some ritual ended the war, the sword would stop working?

I do like the idea of adoption though. If a person is adopted into a family, they and their babies can no longer be killed by the sword, nor can they kill others of the same family.

Well... since we already have magic in the game (magic swords, magic apocalypse), how about having magic swallows that once in a while fly across the screen in the direction of a large town?

In the real world, if you are miles away from a city, you might still see it in the distance. Or if you can't see houses, you might see smoke... light in the darkness... It wouldn't be immersion breaking if the game offered hints.

If Eves spawn further away, as before, and road building is quicker and cheaper, as someone suggested, the result will probably be meaningful interaction between towns. Road building is fun.

I would like for there to be a special knife for use in the kitchen and for slaughtering sheep that can't be used to kill or wound people. It would just be nice to have the option to not make weapons until you really need weapons if you don't want to.

I would also like to see how a baton for stunning people and a lasso to force people into jails or fenced areas would work. It might be an interesting option for those cases when you don't want to use knives and swords (if you need to stop someone from misplacing things or from whistling incessantly perhaps). I'm not 100% sure this is the way to go, I'd just like to see it in play.

Haha, ja, hvorfor ikke? lol

På en måte synes jeg det er veldig morsomt at alle snakker forskjellige språk i spillet. Men jeg antar at hver Eve får tilegnet et eget språk, og at det av den grunn ikke er noen vits i å prøve å lære de forskjellige språkene som dukker opp i spill, siden familielinjene har en tendens til å dø ut ganske fort.

Jeg traff noen som snakket Koreansk en gang. Den ene i familien ba om unnskyldning for at den andre ikke snakket engelsk.

Hun: "His English is really bad"
Jeg: "Not as bad as my Korean"

Det kunne vært gøy om spillet bare oversatte alle fremmedes språk til ett enkelt fellesspråk, slik at man kunne lære seg det. Esperanto, kanskje?

Would it help to add some available water to the spring head, so that the Eve could start using it even before turning it into a well? In other words, have it work like an ordinary pond in the beginning.

Maybe your change of heart is a provocation that forces him to take a good look at himself if he wants to remain your friend. Since he doesn't want to face himself, he lashes out at you instead.

Sort of like Luke's vision in the cave in Star Wars, only Datruff can't handle what he sees.
