I agree with this pretty strongly

Trouble with this idea, and it does have to do with the engine, can be better explained by changing the terms a bit.

Assume that we consider players "Actors", and everything they interact with are "Props".

An actor can use a prop, be it a food item, a horse and cart, or even a theoretical Horse Carriage.

A Prop can not act upon an Actor, Your horse can not ride without you telling it to, your pie won't automatically smack you in the face, no matter how many bananas and cream are in it.

An Actor can act upon an actor though, or use a prop on an actor. But this is the actor performing the action, not the prop. Feeding babies by picking them up, or giving them berries, or killing him once he spams the whistle emote are all examples of this.

To make a Horse and Carriage the way you traditionally think it would work, it would require the carriage (a prop) to work on an actor, because the carriage will have to force the player to move, even though someone is driving it.

There is no mechanism in the game that forces a player to move without the player clicking the mouse on a position.

What there would need to be first is an auto-follow function.  This would be needed first before designing the rest.

THat being said, how many times have you lost someone you are following due to lag? Auto follow would certainly be helpful.

What if you just made the cart part of the actor once in use?

You said there is no mechanism in game that forces a player's movement without clicking the mouse, but a mother carrying a child is just that. I would consider her a vehicle basically.

Like you said its actor acting through the other actor at that point with mother and child. Use that model for vehicles.

Wouldn't a boomerang be used by a griefer?

The idea here is that killing is a last resort, but once you decide to do it, it just happens.  There is no execution or dodging or dancing or any two ways about it.  Someone decided to kill you.  If you don't have friends who can heal you, you will die.

Well yeah they could.. carrots can be eaten intentionally by griefers as their main food when they lose a single pip. Doesn't mean carrots need anymore tweaking though.

I could cope with having friends that could heal me if most of the time they COULD heal me.. stabbings usually only get treated half of the time. In ALL of my lives ive only been saved from an arrow wound once.

Maybe a slight med revamp then?

My ideas would be to change the bowl of sterile pads color (hell just put a red cross on it) and maybe make something other than a knife be able to remove a arrow head.

Aww.. can we at least get a ranged boomerang that only disarms? tongue You could also throw it at a tree and get a bird (for foods and maybe different feathers)

Interesting, so it would seem people are still dumb when it comes to that sort of thing tongue I guess you win this round of theorycrafting vs how things actually play out. Seems people aren't smart enough to attack first with their bow or are hesitant.

I honestly have no idea why it works and maybe I'm just lucky, but I think people just kinda let their guard down if they think they're getting an easy kill. When they chase you down they're thinking they got an easy win and can do it at their pace. Then all of the sudden their prey pulls a knife and rushes them and probably scares the shit out of them for a split second.

Correct, griefers can use snowballs against you just as you can use snowballs against them which is demonstrated in the case of Futurebird and her family being snowballed to death. The snowball is basically the tie breaker in the eternal game of chicken that is melee combat where as ranged combat is just a game of never getting near another player due to not knowing who has the better latency. While snowballs are definitely overpowered and should be nerfed I do feel like something should exist in their niche of disarming with preference to whatever would replace them not be lethal if possible.

Combat as is happens to be a weird system:
Melee beats unarmed (duh)
Snowball beats unarmed and melee
Bows beat melee and unarmed
Snowballs and bows play chicken.

Melee is only truly effective against people who you are outside of their FoV or for surprise attacks with the classic example being stand next to someone and pull out a quick knife.
Melee vs melee is either a game of chicken or a situation of which of the two players is smart enough to fetch a snowball
Ranged vs ranged is just the chicken situation.

While you've removed some of the dancing from combat (melee combat when people are being silly) ranged combat should never result in one player shooting another as it's safer to just avoid the other person until they drop their weapon. So the most effective way in game to combat someone with a bow is to just run around until they have to eat which is also silly in my opinion.

In relation to the bug I have no real idea if the underlying cause for people to permanently lose their surname is related to the server hiccups (completely random disconnects) or if you've managed to fix the root of the problem with players losing their surnames now being cursable.

I've actually only been killed by the bow and not the sword since the change.

#407 Re: Main Forum » Is Jason's coding really spaghetti? » 2019-06-05 21:02:08

If by spaghetti you mean delicious, then yes.

I actually haven't gone through the coding for this game, but when i see examples of it in the github with changes, I can usually decipher what changed by reading the code. However I'm mainly a script kiddie and just change 0's to 1's and plug in stuff. I'm guessing by spaghetti you guys are saying its jumbled without some kind of natural order?

#412 Re: Main Forum » Will the penguin ever have a purpose? » 2019-05-30 23:53:52

I spent half a life trying to trap one that was in our village that I named kevin. This was before fences though, and someone built a trash pit and started throwing away the bone needles I was using to trap him.

If I ever see a penguin super close to home again ill trap him for real this time.

I lost my father figure that taught me about fixing cars pretty recently. I was a mess for a bit.. and probably still am a tad, but one of the things that helped me back to functioning like a person again was getting back into this game..

So thank you for everything Jason

I am truly sorry for your loss. Take your time and be with family.

#416 Re: Main Forum » Another means for new surnames » 2019-05-30 01:50:11

Ive seen this and middle names be brought up before. I'd support both, but not if it would take a bit of work that could be put somewhere else right now.

Also there are first names on the list that are two part names. Some I've been using lately are Brooklynmarie and Blakelee.

You guys can grow milkweed.  As much as you want.  It has no side-effects.

The side effect is that you cant eat it.

It's easy to mismanage soil (and now water) needs vs availability. If someone is in a mindset of "lets organize this place!" And plant a bunch of milkweed for boxes, they might have just doomed their families food production. Most people planting milkweed aren't composting either and can easily steal dirt that might be needed two or three generations from then.

Thats why the milkweed meta was, and still is, to grow it pretty far outside of town. Not only for greed of getting all reward yourself, but also not to burn your towns resources. You take soil and water that isn't dire to you.

On the other hand, I've lived many lives in villages where there were very few storage boxes.  These are not hard to make.  I spent my most recent life making some, and getting all the junk up off the ground and organized.

That said, I may be missing something.

Is the main complaint that there are simply some things that can't be stored, at all?  Or some things that would be nice to stack, that don't stack?

I see this, about making more stacks:

https://github.com/jasonrohrer/OneLifeData7/issues/269

I created this issue about the storage issue specifically.  Please help to fill it in:

https://github.com/jasonrohrer/OneLifeData7/issues/319

I'm surprised nobody stabbed you haha. Well they probably thought you were making carts. Rope is more important for buckets and horsecarts than it is for storage at the moment.

As for stacks, there could be a few added... copper and corn come to mind

Dang only 8 hours? I mean it might work well if we get families that last for more than 20 or 30 generations. It might since there's not eve stacking now, but have a feeling 8 might not be enough.

#421 Re: Main Forum » Rampant Eve griefing has made the game unplayable » 2019-05-28 09:37:19

Hes fixing it next. From the news section last week.

"Next week, I'll be tackling Eve overload around existing cities, and also the balance between close towns and stripped natural resources."

But trust me I feel your pain. I hate running into an armed eve or eves kid when I'm a kid on a supply run. You're a sitting duck and they pick you off. Then you get to a town where there is actually a sizable group of different families and peace, and then there's a wave of war sword violence out of nowhere.

What are you talking about?

The swords kill by name not race

https://edge.onetech.info/3047-War-Swor … FamilyOnly

"War Sword
otherFamilyOnly
"

You kill other families not other races, you can kill same races, different races

How is that racist?

Also im pretty sure if you adopt someone from another race/family and they get your lastname then they are part of the family and cant get killed, but not sure since i havent tested this.

Ok how bout xenophobic?

The only successful multi "race" villages ive seen work were the blondes and brunettes. I think half of the people didn't even realize they were two separate families.. and two different latin families living together with the same effect.

It's by lineage (the word I'm relating with race) and doesn't matter if you you adopt, they can be killed by sword. Like family tree. If you name someone from another family they'll get the last name but they wont show on your family tree and the two families will technically never merge.

At least that's what I've seen and that's what has been explained to me on the discord.

Jokes aside, there is no single point for any families of differing races to interact at this time.

We need the sword to kill by name and not race if we want to see families work together. Vllages with multiple families would work if they ACTUALLY became one cohesive group by mixing.

Even the most basic nomad tribes in life are tiny families within in a unit.

That's the one disconnect from adding these war swords I feel. It made the meta, anyone who doesn't look like me is automatically bad..

Instead of "We are family 1 and its us against the world" it should be "We are families 1,2, and 3 and families 4, and 5 are our friends.. families 6,7, and 8 are dicks and our enemies."

#424 Re: Main Forum » Are there any towns connected by roads? » 2019-05-28 04:44:51

Yeah pretty much. Why build a road if it is only going to end bad?

We need the sword to kill by name and not race if we want to see families work together. Two villages connected with multiple families would work if they ACTUALLY became one family by mixing.
