Some tips to avoid grieffers on low pop servers :

-Never settle at your spawn point or near. The next Eve is gonna spawn really close to you. Before the band update, I would find the closest ruins or Eve camp, set a landmarker, pick any direction and walk at least 500-700 tiles away. Find a good spot to settle and remember how far it is from the landmarker. If you lose your new spawn point, you'll just have to do the same trip again. Now with the band update, I would go east (then north or south) again to avoid new Eves who will spaw west. You're not even obliged to settle very close to the bands, as long as you're not afraid of travelling a bit, you'll get a horse eventually. Talking about horse, I sometimes dedicate my first life to get a horse, just to travel far away. You should find ruins that make this job even easier : some already have mutton or knife.

-Build a 3x3 room with stone walls and a lock door (choose well spot of this room as you won't be able to remove it later). The north walls can be plaster walls with boxes. This is where you'll put all your iron, tools and horse before dying. Hide the key behind a tree farther from your town, go die in another spot. It's a constraint but it never takes more than 2-3min. Later when I'm rich with iron, I would surround the smith area with walls and one locked door. The key for this room would be in the 3x3 locked room.

-Empty all veins around your town. The idea is, if the grieffer wants to destroy my town then he has to work a bit on it. Before the well update I would empty all veins and gather all the loose iron 400 tiles all around my town. No close iron available to make tools.

-I have surrounded my towns with stone walls and made locked doors, but it's a lot of time and I realized that it wasn't always necessary, as I was already very far from the new Eves spawn. Don't forget grieffers are also lazy.

That's all I can think for now. Hope it helps ! And yes, reaching tiles diagonally is a bad idea.

#27 Re: Main Forum » Bug water on solo server ? » 2020-10-15 06:21:11

It seems the well resets if someone else also plays on the server, in another spot, so the time goes by. I also play on low pop and sometimes my well doesn't reset, it is just that nobody else played.

I would advice you to never upgrade it. Just empty the shallow well into cisterns and let it be reset. It will cost you one stone plus a shovel dig. If you upgrade it into deep well, it may be reset too and you'll lose a bucket. I haven't tested out the other wells, I don't know if they reset, I don't want to risk losing a full pump. And the basic well seems to be way sufficient, even if it's kinda time consumming to empty it.

I don't play anymore but I would use russian names because they rock.
My girls would be Olia, Olga, Zofia (this one is maybe more polish, that's my rl sister's name).
My boys would be Vladimir (even if it annoyes me it's Poutine's name), Stanislas, but my favorite was Piotr.
And after 6 or 7 games when I had no more ideas,  I would name them after what they where born next to : Barry if he was born in the berry field, (still) Olia if I was working on oil...
Running babies would be named Forest (run Forest, run !).
For the annoying ones, I would just type "you are boring/tiresome/annoying" and they would get a random name.

I plussone on what Cogito said. Vertical palings are too fat, however it seems difficult to draw it well.
I would also add your wood need to look the same everywhere, gate and fences.

I made that quickly :
9BGqIoJ.png
How about spacing horizontal palings ? It looks lighter and kinda helps solving the junction of textures. On your current one you have a space (which could also be filled in streching the texture of 2-3 pixels).
Good luck on vertical ones... On the pic you can see my failed attempts.

This is what annoys me :
FktKBMF.png
The automatic path will make you zigzag between boxes, instead of going straight down, straight left then straight up, while the diagonal boxes
MNo1XXq.png
still makes you zigzag but much less, so you save time. It looks like it's nothing, but imagine this pattern of boxes-farms is repeated several times in a row, your character is gonna zigzag between all of them (and this really annoys me).
Spacing isn't an issue as I left two tiles between each farm plot. That's also something you should do on BS, leave a gap of two tiles between farms so you never lack room to drop things and you disturb less the other farmers.

In my previous post, I said "nothing you can't do on BS2" tho now the diesel engine produces only four buckets of water (three actually as you'll need one to make oil), painted walls are probably not a thing to do anymore. For instance, the drugstore I made (red and white building) is 24 plaster walls (so 24 bowls of water) plus 16 painted walls (so 32 bowls of water for salked lime, plus 8 corns (2 bowls of water) plus 8 bowls of water to the cow (for extra bucket of milk)) what is 66 bowls of water in total. So... bon courage !

And for the smith area, I agree with you Gogo. On BS2 it's more convenient to have it in an open area, preferably a huge one, and leave tools on the ground because you're not the only one who has problem with perception ! smile

#31 Re: Main Forum » your town planning ideas » 2020-03-16 16:48:38

To me, the well should be the center of the town and not the center of the farms, because everybody needs it. Also, leave room around it, to build boxes (for tanks), to have room to drop stuff (oil, buckets...).
I personally always build north-south and east-west roads leading to it, because you'll need to run to the well more than you imagine, then I build the town around.

Here are some examples (those have been built on low-pop servers but that's nothing you can't do on BS2) :
IaIdSX1.jpg
16Ha2f0.jpg
(sorry for the blank parts, the well is in the middle under the blank spot)
I didn't plant any berry bush in this town, I had a lot of wild ones north (in the blank spot) ans some more a bit everywhere. I removed the less I could of wild ressources and built around (for the aesthetic and because I'm lazy). My farms are also 3x3 but in diagonal, so the boxes won't stop you from walking.
Don't leave food in the kitchen, put it outside. Build some yummy spots a bit everywhere around the town.

I like this kitchen configuration :
qQ3RY8Q.png
because you can stand behind the oven and cook pies from the three boxes without moving. I never put anything that blocks walking in front of it (because I hate blocking things and the automatic path that can be dumb), I keep room for things that can't go into boxes (bread, pumpink pies...).

For the forges
RbvGHYt.png
I like Pein's configuration : one tile between both kilns (faster to light them, to make charcoal). Some like two tiles between forges and newcomen, I prefer one tile (faster). Although, I should have left two tiles instead of one between kilns and back wall, I sometimes got stuck to drop something in a hurry.

For the sheep pen (sorry for the line in the screenshot)
5W2M9Wi.png
I like it when you can enter from any side (again, I hate block-walking things). Hard to see but there's also an entrance behind the loom. On BS2, you shouldn't leave a tree because someone may cut it, or people don't see what's behind (I play with transparent trees so it didn't bother me).

And now, some building ideas (because you're not obliged to make square rooms !)

Due to the sucky auto-oriented walls, it's a bit more tedious to get corner shapes. Just use propriety fences (no need to hit them, just need to place them near your wall). Plaster your walls before removing them or they'll turn back to straight walls.

And don't forget to make sucky puns !

#33 Bug Discussion » Can't respawn as an Eve on low pop server » 2020-02-27 15:57:55

Not sure it's a bug, I don't know where to post this and I have to share my irritation so here it is :
I can no longer spawn as an Eve on low pop servers when there's another player (fertile woman). Before, I would /die once or twice before respawning in my town as an Eve. Now I can /die dozen of times, I'm still born as a baby to the other player.

I asked to one of my mom to curse me, so I won't get born around her anymore. It worked for one life, then next life I reborn in DK (some other players had joined her, I guess they cursed me too, or had cursed me previously, whatever). I suicided and logged back when the server was empty, obviously I had lost my town.

That's annoying. It worked perfectly fine two or three weeks ago, what happened, what changed ?

DestinyCall wrote:

Trust me, I could write my own tutorial on milkweed.

I don't doubt about this but you sounded so desperated about farming milkweed I wanted to cheer you up showing it can be not that frustrating, as long as you don't have to make compost (because filling tons of bowls with berries is really annoying). Also, if you're farming milkweed for a personnal project, it can be even more irritating when random people harvest your production under your nose, to make an n-th bow or arrow.

It's not THE way to do, it's one way to do. I did that several times on low-pop server, fields of milkweed and skewers, and that's still my favorite way, except that I use steel hoes. The purpose was more to show a way to farm without relying on town for tools : be an independant farmer !

About the quantity of soil... I didn't do math but my woman intuition tells me it's better to use only one unit of soil : tools break whenever they want and mostly when you don't want them to. I tilled hundreds of rows (yes, I exagerate a bit but really, sometimes I till rows just to break the hoe and recycle steel but the hoe won't break) as I tilled barely ten rows and the hoe broke. One argument to use only one unit could be the more soil you use, the less you have near your town, the further you have to go to find new pits. Best was when we could till two units of soil, but RIP this.
Also, I would advice to not use skewers too much (except in young towns) : 1-they break very fast, it's frutrating, 2-people use them to make new arrows (because they don't find them behind trees), 3-you need them for latex, tomatoes and cook on coals, 4-you need them for letters.

Here is how to farm from scratch and how to make compost.
Now I'm bored with tutorials.

As for the reason auto-orient was put in place, it's because many players couldn't be bothered to orient their walls properly.  In terms of gameplay, non-oriented walls are just as functional as oriented walls, and poorly oriented walls were all over the place in the game.

I guess you mean EW wall shelves that we used to see. People would build them NS if they existed, because it's a convenient storage.

jasonrohrer wrote:

But also, in general, if something CAN be automated by the computer, it should be.

Then how about filling a bowl of berries in clicking the bush with an empty bowl ? I prefer hit stakes two or three times to choose the shape I really want than clicking bush-bowl-bush-bowl indefinitely for everything and anything (pies, clothes, compost, rabbits...).

jasonrohrer wrote:

You do have full control over walls that are free-standing and not touching other walls.

but

jasonrohrer wrote:

Walls were supposed to be functional.

How a free-standing wall is functionnal ?
Also, walls are functionnal for a 6x6 or 7x7 room, but a room of this size isn't functionnal. It's way too small for a kitchen that is supposed to feed a whole village. Even in playing alone it's too small.

A little video about what I said in my previous post, about removing fences, ending with me not being able to place a fence close to a building.

#39 Re: Main Forum » Auto-orient on ancient walls. » 2019-11-28 20:14:17

I plus-one. No more pretty buildings with a mix of straight and corner walls, waste of time thinking how to set your stakes.

voy178 wrote:

The only thing that would need it is fences.

I hope you mean propriety fences ! Because it's trash for wood fences too.
Before the update, my horse was tied where the red arrow points to, it was an EW fence :
gTlDG99.png

When I took back the horse back, it turned to NS and the one above turned to corner. That's not as pretty but above all it's not as convenient.

Also lately in some town with a guy, we fixed the sheep pen, adding a row above the one already existing. Both rows turned into corners, and when we removed the lower row, the top row remained a line of corners. Fortunately he figured out hitting fences with mallet would turn them back into EW fences. But that is annoying because it demands more time and a tool slot to use the mallet.

#40 Re: Main Forum » Is there a sound directory? None of them are labeled » 2019-11-25 09:05:39

The whisle ID is 1019.
To find back any ID, go to OnTech, search for your object, get its ID (here for horse-drawn cart it's 778). Then go to the Object folder, open the matching .txt file (778). Look for the "sound" line, it gives the ID (here 1019).

If you're making rods, you have time to smith some hoes with the remaining of your firing forges, assuming you have enough ingots.

But people asking for tools, please, bring KINDLINGS to the smithy. Or at least branches.

#42 Re: Main Forum » Posse implementation » 2019-09-28 07:12:06

How about a solution that doesn't involve weapon, like a vote system ? Someone could launch a vote "should we kick XX from the family ? yes/no", with a majority of yes XX is killed instantly and can be born to another family. If no family available, because XX has either been kicked from all families either been cursed everywhere, he goes to DK.

#43 Re: Main Forum » Teaching methods » 2019-09-25 08:59:51

I often teach compost and burritos. I quite always do the tasks with my pupil, at the same time, telling him/her the steps and showing him/her the actions. Then he/she has to do the same. This way, you get twice the amount of what you're doing. It's also helpful if I forget a word, I just have to say "use this" (taking and putting back the item) "on this" (taking and putting back the other item). And as I use zoom mod, I can get them the tools they need easily.
I remind them to not forget to eat, but I also feed them by precaution.

Lately, as the arc doesn't last long, it didn't bother me to teach a class instead of working on something more important/urgent. This almost-done-engine will disappear in a few hours anyway but this player is gonna play again, and next life he/she'll know a bit more what to do/how to be useful.

Also, it has no relation but it seems backpack doesn't decay anymore. I haven't checked on BS2 but on low pop server, the four backpacks I built two days ago are still alive and kicking.

Switching (right click) two full baskets still stacks them and spreads what the lower one contains.

I'm going to guess that this was done on one of the empty servers or on a private server... but impressive none the less, just out of curiosity how old are those corn plants? a hundred and couniting?

Yes, I made that on a low pop server. The corn plants are the youngest plants of this garden, as I first made an E with them, but it was unreadable so I used them to draw the C. The whole thing took me about four Eve lives, so three hours in total. I had a bunch of wild soil very close and most of seeds I used were already available. I only had to make new seeds for potatoes and squash. And onions, as the E made out of single onions wasn't pretty enough. The garden itself wasn't that long, I think the longest part was the cleaning part, removing trees and other blocking stuff. I have also been unlucky with two hoes that broke after about ten uses (brand new hoes, freshly smithed).

Now to reply to Booklat1, indeed buildings are useless, moreover in the rift on BS2 where they'll last only a few hours. Pity because you can build really nice things, build some castles, mix stone walls with adobe walls... I build them for the beauty of it. Cars are also useless, where would you go with only two minutes of gasoline, what would you bring back with only three spots in your car (the fourth one being taken by your tank of kerosene). We once built two cars, still on low pop server, with a race circuit. Well, we raced once, it was funny and dizzy but then... ? There's nothing really interesting to do with cars. Even worse with planes.
I agree there's a lot of stuff to fix beforehand. The way we make compost for example. When everybody yums, feeds sheeps for wool and compost, you end up with a bunch of mutton. Irl, my compost is made of all the vegetable and fruit peels, tree leaves... then worms work for me. I never add sheep poop. I may bring some horse poop once a year, not even every years, directly on the ground. Irl, I would certainly not feed a sheep with human edible food : sheeps eat grass and poop by themselves.
Jason is taking his time on the rift... that's maybe the problem : he releases an update that isn't working well and then we have to wait for fixes. To get what ? Diggable cacti. Why ? Who has ever been annoyed that much by a cactus ? What family settle in the desert so they have to dig cacti to expand their town ? Why make bones in a basket uncontainable ? What was the urge for that ? I would prefer he fixes the ten-uses-and-I-break hoe (I also noticed it for some other tools) than he fixes useless issues.

#49 Re: Main Forum » Mom, I finished your tree. » 2019-09-05 07:51:46

I've been a weed queen in this life. I started planting milkweed at young age, with no real purpose, but milkweed is always good for buckets, carts and doors (oh yes, at first i wanted to make a door because I had found a steel spring), and a field of milkweed is always pretty when all the plants are grown and in different states.

I made some buckets and planted more milkweed.

Then I saw two bowls of wax, so I decided to make the candle tree. A kid found my hidden cart full of all the thread I needed, and as it's easier to steal than harvest what's on ground he helped himself in the cart. Fortunately I still had enough to make the candles and garlands.
We almost forget one candle, luckily you're not as blind as me, and the candle set was done.

I'm glad you could finish it ! Pity it got destroyed so fast, but at least you could enjoy the best part : when it's all illuminated !
This tree shouldn't be as easy to chop down, I guess it's not even an hungry work ?

Anyways, even if the end is sad, that was a nice life and work. Thank you for your help. And don't be sorry !

Me and my sons were a bit sad to "play for nothing", we hoped for a girl until I turned 40. Nothing. Fortunately another Eve came to our town with her two girls, and if I remember well she had 2 more girls after, so we worked for them. But our familly was dead. How is that I had only boys (I was dressed and yumming) and the other Eve had quite only girls ?
