Yes! This would force farming apart and create the network of roads and villages people love so much. Genius smile

How would a procedurally generated tech tree work in OHOL?

I googled this and all I can find is random magic type tech trees where the concepts are generic to begin with.
How does this suit the realism of OHOL?

Replace biomes with seasons.

@Flintstone
You said you had trouble with how to calculate shoes... Can they be treated as "floors that travel with you"?
I think keeping the number of gauges down is important, and tying the environment to energy consumption is close enough. Since you can tie healing into the already present energy gauge I think everything relevant to survival is already available. You are right that the math for factors affecting energy consumption need tweaking though.

I like your ideas for calculating inside vs outside. Houses really need to be easier to build and more important in use.
Wooden floor roads everywhere are silly and wasteful.

Regarding baby suicide. I just finished a game in a large town where I had SIX daughters, five suicided and the last one died before puberty.

http://lineage.onehouronelife.com/serve … &id=362990

I can't make sense of the suicides. Some happened while I was out foraging. I say "big town" as soon as they appear and I drop everything and try and run them back immediately, but they drop out of my arms and run off to die anyway. I had one quit in my arms. Some suicided right in the middle of the town, I have no idea what would have made them happy.

How do you calculate "bad mother"?

Eve with a fig leaf chastity belt would provide this. And if you change your mind and want to play with others simply take it off.

Lower food consumption when standing still
This one's not really a huge change, but it would definitely help with communication. If you didn't have to worry so much about starving to death while talking to someone, players would be a lot more capable of teaching others, which would help immensely with fostering co-operation and easing the learning curve.

+1.

I want to teach people things, but they don't stop to listen.

Or we're constantly interrupted, because one of us has to run to get food before we starve right there on the spot.

Advanced players say things like "I don't have time to stop and talk".
^-- it's possible they would say this even if they were standing on a perfect tile. I'm not sure how to encourage those people to teach.

Agreed. This is such a great idea. Brilliant!

EDIT: This introduces the whole concept of comfort. Standing out in the wilderness is somewhat relaxing, but a hut, or chairs, or a bed should be more comfortable and relaxing and use even less food. They're all stationary so they're only good for talking... A bed could totally pause food consumption but you're asleep so you can't talk either (but this would give players a chance to go to the bathroom IRL without dying!)

Abandonment is bad but baby suicide is just as big a problem, if not bigger because you have no control over your daughters running away.

With so many baby deaths (neglect, suicide, cluelessness) punishing adults with lowered fertility is a death sentence for everyone.

Technically a mother who abandons is trying to enact some sort of family planning, what we need is the ability to prevent unwanted births (like the super annoying baby born before you even load in as an Eve) and some sort of fertility treatment for when you really want a baby.

I had a long ago suggestion of a fig leaf chastity belt that decays after a few minutes. Eves should be born with one, so that there is some time to at least scout a location before the babies start coming. It should be removable if she wants babies earlier. and replaceable if she wants to wait longer. Similarly a fig fruit could make her super fertile.

More than anything the zoom out mod is required to survive. The current visual field is way too short sighted.

Ideally though zoom level should be attached to the mouse wheel, or maybe use the currently unused numbers on the keyboard?

RANDOMLY GENERATED PEOPLE.

The whole idea of a unique life is lessened when there are so few character types.
Would it be possible to divide the characters into parts (eyes, mouth, skin, hair) that are randomly assembled when you spawn?
Then add a whole bunch more options for all those parts!
Could weight based on how full you are also be a thing?

#487 Re: Main Forum » Little things that need fixing. » 2018-06-18 21:23:46

- Flooring should bring the temperature towards the middle, rather than heating things up all the time. It should insulate, not generate heat.

#488 Re: Main Forum » What's missing from the CORE experience? » 2018-06-18 21:17:03

I asked a friend and he said the #1 reason he doesn't play anymore is because of the murders. His suggestion was just get rid of the ability to murder. I explained you wanted murder as an option in the game (and I have to agree it has its place), to which he said "medicine then". So medicine, or no PvP at all...

My thoughts:

Start up problems:

- There needs to be more instructions when the game starts up. Most people have no idea what to do.

- Link to https://onetech.info or make something similar that you personally maintain, so that people have any idea about what changes are happening

- Add a tutorial mode (that is always available from the start screen) where they go through the basics of starting a camp, and raising a baby.

- Like it or not baby carrying needs to be a thing. New players especially get frustrated when they die several times in villages then fail to raise their own babies when they spawn as an Eve. It's a Pavlovian negative feedback loop that is driving people away. Being able to work while caring for a baby is essential. Similarly being able to watch someone work while a baby is essential. Real life is like this. We learn from observation.

- Adjust the biome temperatures a bit more interestingly, most are freezing except the desert which is boiling. It would help if there was a good reason to build different types of societies in different biomes, rather than looking for an "all in one" space every time.

- We have food, but I think the starvation rate is too high. Even with the new variety of food your whole life is a mad dash for food.

- We have clothing, but the temperature/hunger rate needs to be explained on start up, and the style range could be expanded to keep people from getting bored.

- Shelter is really lack luster. We need some simple easier building materials so that buildings don't take multiple lifetimes. Even if it's grass huts, people want a space to call their own.

- Expand the tech tree. Several times I've seen people straight up declare they're bored and are quitting.

- More of everything. I know you don't like swap outs, but they keep things interesting. Some people like roses, some people like tulips. Both are good even though they both fill the same niche.

Some of this stuff is the way it is for a reason (you wouldn't eat predator meat in real life, top of the food chain, yuck).  Other stuff, like saplings growing into trees, are bigger things that will come later.  Names aren't automatic because it makes the act of naming meaningful.  Name your babies, people!

Stuff that I fixed (will be in update next week).

--Two pieces rabbit fur containable.

--Broken cart decays in 20 minutes instead of one hour.

--Salt in bowl no longer permanent (can turn it back into salt water).

--Partial bucket looks different from empty bucket all the way down.

--Non-ancient stone walls can be removed (sacrifice mining pick per wall).

Thank you so much!

Other little things:

- Snake skin is not containable.
- Straight branches can be carried in carts, but their processed form "long straight shaft" cannot.
- I know you don't like the idea of baby carrying, but could babies ride in carts? It's far up the tech tree and when you have a horse and cart it seems silly that you can't bring kids home without abandoning one of the most advanced techs in the game (to run off and never be found again).
- Perhaps replace the current horse with an Ass smile and reintroduce horses that are actually tame and follow behind you while you hunt.

That gives no valid reasons not to eat carnivores other than it being inefficient. We eat top level predators all the time. Like tuna? ... but seriously Native Americans and plenty of other people totally eat seal and bear all the time. The sentiment about eating wolf/dog is cultural - In fact The Lychee and Dog Meat Festival starts next week, June 21st on the summer solstice. Game meat is food, it's silly to starve while there's dead animals lying about!

#494 Re: Main Forum » Dogs vs Murderers » 2018-06-15 13:31:16

Although now that I write that out, it would mean dead puppies everywhere which would be depressing.

wolf pup + bowl of minced rabbit = domestic wolf + bowl of minced rabbit = domestic wolf with puppy
puppy + time = dog

... and you would have to feed the dog "bowl of minced rabbit" to get another puppy.

#495 Re: Main Forum » Dogs vs Murderers » 2018-06-15 13:26:04

Ya, wolves could have a pup, and you would have to capture it similarly to a capturing a mouflon lamb.

wolf pup + bowl of minced rabbit = domestic wolf > domestic wolf with puppy
hungry puppy + bowl of minced rabbit = dog

#496 Re: Main Forum » "Sry too many" » 2018-06-15 13:02:24

The lineage ban is to prevent baby suicides abandoning Eves.
I agree there should be more family planning options though.
