you were lucky & i am happy for you that it all played out so well for you, both cousins
lucky already because the mother had a 3 letters name ![]()
but also lucky because your cousin wasn't a killer
yeah, sorry for being that sour, but a killer can be spawned as any person, so you never know
the idea that murder is preventable by naming the kids is an illusion, last serial killer in a town i played in had a name
while i was so many times an unnamed boy & i don't murder nobody ![]()
namelessness is just another foul excuse for a pretend reason to murder
but in general it is a good idea to tell the mother to name her kids
though it can be also a pain in the butt, sorry, but all too eager players are going on my nerves sometimes ![]()
i care more for bare survival, for functionality of the town, for a backpack, for a milkweed farm, for all tools present to make carts, for a working compost-pies chain, for partneship & cooperation
names are important for cultural reasons, but i really couldn't care less about my name in a game, where i am dead after an hour, on top of the fact that i am playing atm in settlements only as males where usually nobody cares anyway because they are either busy themselves with their own bare survival or just trolling ![]()
i think at least the Eve's bones should contain the info about her, even if moved
& maybe there should be a special option to mark bones as nameable before moving them, this would remove the automatic tracking necessity but still give those special persons in someone's life an oportunity to be honored
it could be an object spawned with every new grave, pickable from that grave & if applied to those bones, then this would make them to a named object themselves
i also think, those named bones should be the only ones containing the information remaining, passed down for all people living in that place later, every other grave could just loose after an hour or so the option to name them & those bones should just disappear as well maybe
in any case burial rituals is the most basic form of culture & tradition, so thank you Jason ![]()

yep
no idea if it's a bug or intended
you could post a bug report here https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewforum.php?id=3
here you see what a modest location does to kids, which are not totally up to survive
i was the old dude http://lineage.onehouronelife.com/serve … e&id=73400
if i run around a beginner area as kid or Eve, then i carry the sharp stone & dig all burdocks out, not eating, just making them easily accessible
the even more worse part than starvation is starvation near burdocks not having a sharp rock with you ![]()
carrot has 5 food, burdock 7
- - -
to find a good spot as Eve is actually as seldom as a jackpot
where it falls short usually in my runs as Eve or as Eve's kid is either lack of berry bushes to beginn with, berry bushes & other food scattered too thin, means one has to run long distances to reach the next food source at all, which is for kids just deadly or there are even tons of bear caves, bears, wolves & snakes roaming right from the start
& that's only for the bare raw very first survival ! not even talking here about building a settlement to make the first killn, farm & backpack
i suspect meantime anyway that the first home founded by an Eve needs different ressources laid out differently in a different spot than an advanced settlement, so the tryout to think ahead & to build for an advanced town right from the very beginning will end up deadly for the founders generation & will cause constant struggles for everybody trying to get footing there
& the successful towns i've been to had already literally tons of berry bushes in at least one biome nearby, if i had ever that many berry bushes as Eve, it would have been a paradise, usually i can call myself lucky if i find few reeds & at least two ponds in a swamp near grassland with some berry bushes & milkweed but to expect that there is also prairie with many ressources is already luxury & then asking for desert without snakes & maybe even with cacti, didn't happen so far for me, lol
- - -
@Pronghorn
so you changed over to the dark side ?
i think, congratulations are in place, right ?
after all, Righteously Avenging the loved ones is a Righteous Kill ![]()
- - -
@BlueRock
yes, is a damn nuissance them bloody corpses in the way
i wish there was a way to get them quicker decay, maybe add lime ?
or at least make use of that blood, like bathing in the blood of your kill rewards you with no slow down with the next kill ?
should add that as a suggestion ![]()
- - -
atm trending is GENOCIDE
the ultimate goal here
take the longest lived family line & hunt down all females
the murderer will be even rewarded with an own picture & a well earned place among all those they killed !
also comming up
work your killing way through all the Ages :
baby, freshly grown hair kid, freshly fertile female, fresh mother, freshly unfertile female, kill at 59
Thank You Jason for including the Family Tree feature & not nerfing murder !
Thank You for making everybody a good target which makes for so many creative ways to kill them all
it's just SO MUCH FUN to be able to roam about freely ![]()
also Thank You for the Red Text & the Scream of a killed target, it's every time so satisfying to be rewarded this way ![]()

mulgara wrote:Nope, he killed a few more people after you. I killed the nameless guy up north with an arrow, came back down to let everyone know, and immediately got stabbed by some woman.
You were Dereck, you killed Nameless Strong.
I was Rose Strong. I stabbed you for fun. Then I stabbed Triss, who was my mom. I was bored and let Lola kill me.
We only murdered boys and non birthing age women. Never girls or adult women. It was just for fun.
I love you all.
selective murder - you must feel good about that ![]()
for me nothing changed
i still suicide as female baby
get abandoned often as well
see often other babies suicide too
playing Eve alone is boring
maybe instead to concentrate on death you could concentrate more on the life, to make it worthwhile living
like adressing murder for the benefit of the victim : medicine, two strikes needed, positive/negative karma ?
& culture ?
Well, I didn't get griefed. Leia was just a baby when I died.
then you missed all the "fun" we had as Leia grabbed the knife & started with the sheep pen builder
yeah, i was there too
at least Leia did not get me
i wish i would have acted quicker but i am so tired of all the killing by now, totally worn out
played yesterday few times, several murders occured & two times outright outspoken mass murder, it's now even genocide happening
the systematic erradication of all endevours on continuation, the systematic murder on family lineages
on official servers is playing as family not possible anymore, there will be at least one murderer & players are just leaving the game
the murderers will be the last to go, they are the rulers in OHOL, Jason has invited them & nurtured & catered to them, so they thrive
it's not the game i wanted to play
there are better games than OHOL if i wanted a game surrounding killings, tons of them
i often eat at 5 bars left as lag killed me with item in hand near a bush, so there is that
also i always signal f when i grow a bit as a baby, f at 2 bars? im good as deadgood luck having enough rabbits
this whole food thing is different topic
my point is, 8 carrot pies are needed to clean up the grain left there by makign baskets, so take the wheat sheaf where free tiles not an issue, if you need baskets, wells are full and baskets decayed, means you need a huge wheat farm and carrot pies are finei do think all people need a purpose in their life, so even if its ineffective, its a purpose, a kid getting me firewood? he jsut saved me tons of time for forging, getting me one piece of clay? im happy about it as he scouted the map a bit and even one bowl made is something to use the kindling on while making clay
i often see people living their life in the clothes you gave them, wandering around the town for half hour not doing anything useful, now every well which is full, its a water wasted every 5 minutes, every berry bush which is full its a bowl of berry wasted every hour, less time for griefing, murdering, crying about seeds, making drama
maybe that's the thing
nobody really willing to hunt rabbits, lol
not enough patience
hunting rabbits is probably the second unpopular thing after farming carrots ![]()
but so far it's an exception that rabbits are rare around a settlement & that's then just a badly chosen spot or a spot chosen to head straight for sheep herding
& please don't tell me, that to waste two soil with domesticated wheat for one basket is more sustainable than to run a little longer with a cart & get 4 baskets from wild stuff, which simply stands there unused
lazy ? that might be the point
i am really looking forward till Jason introduces mass production plagues, will be probably as popular as apocalypse & decay was ![]()
Carrots AREN'T sustainable - that's the thing.
I just want to address some of the misinformation in the forums. It's too frequent that I see "Q" babies doing things that make me shudder - because they read it on the forums.
I'm not as interested in breaking records, as I am in people playing as efficiently as they can.
Also, since in a well-functioning town every has a backpack, you should be producing about 126 calories per person, which is more than a third of their caloric intake, and in combination with mutton pies and berries during childhood and old age, you've got all your food sorted. Putting a carrot in your rabbit pies is usually a waste of time and 7 calories.
you just can't let it go
just can't stand that others have a different view of things
cause what you say is just per se absolutely true while what everybody not agreeing with you says is misinformation, thanks
btw
there are no calories in the game, but because you said that there are, therefore this is oc no misinformation, right ? ![]()
i won't be discussing anymore with you
cause what you say is just true, so what is there to discuss ? ![]()
A Cart can hold 2 straight branches, 1 azde, and a 1 shovel.
BP can hold round stone and stakes (and a pie)That's your fence making kit right there.
You can either make a cart trip to fence location,
or take some risk and go by horse if you are a fast fence maker catching the horse every 1 or 2 steps of fence making and not forgetting to eat (wouldn't recommend this unless you're a really experienced player tho)
yeah, the backpack
the first thing i usually do in a town is a backpack for me
so it's not common to have a backpack
hunting rabbits is probably preceived as one of the most tedious works straight after farming carrots
add to that the usual lack of needles & milkweed thread & the backpack scarcity becomes real
a cart can hold 4 places, not only 4 things
means it can hold up to 4 baskets & one basket can hold 3 things
so even if i don't have a backpack i can still pack a basket into the cart
even if there are no baskets i can make one along the way with only one simple sharp stone & the branches carry from nearby instead to transport them with the cart over a long distance
i will check out the fence making
sounds interesting
@Alleria
every player interested in preserving of ressources can do the math
i presented it
an adult has 20 food capacity
1/4th of a rabbit-carrot pie fills it completely starting with food need dropped all the way down to 4, you can even wait till it drops to only 1 point & if eaten you'll be filled nearly completely
1/4th of a sole rabbit pie fills only 3/5 of the food meter, that's near enough to only half of it, when it's probably actually eaten
also rabbits are usually rather seldom in a settlement, one needs patience, so to waste all that work to fill only 3/5 of a hunger bar if you could fill it with only one additional carrot to nearly all of it, if that's not being perceived as waste, then i can't help it ![]()
but every player is allowed to eat every fancy food already when the food bar droped one bit already
i will still search among all those useless sole carrot, berry & rabbit pies io to find either a rabbit-carrot or mutton pie
those will remain for me the only viable choice to eat pies when adult & eat them when the food meter is extremely low first
i will also still be putting carrots into the bowls with rabbit to make those pies sustainable ![]()
& oc everybody who needs a quick casual game with "Power gamers" to reach the next record goal is free to follow your advice as your "pleb" ![]()
yeah, waiting too for that to happen

@tumbitiger
Only work around would be to place a fence in the middle of a foraging area like a savanna or swamp. Apart from that, they're just an unnecessary nuisance at this stage...
couldn't agree more
but maybe i should extent my helping gameplay to fence placement in all sorts of areas surrounding a town
though it will be quite cumbersome since a fence kit cannot be placed in a cart, not even a Long Straight Shaft ![]()
but i could at least carry always the basic things in a cart,
hm, does an Adze go into a backpack ? i suppose also not
i should make another suggestion, about more realistic extended placement of things in a cart

breezeknight wrote:i use wild wheat for a basket if there are no tule reeds nearby
but i would never use a domesticated wheat for baskets, that's literal griefing of fertile soilStrongly disagreed. I usually turn about half my wheat into baskets with the other half going to compost. Ideally, you have about 4 baskets per person. There's no point to having more than this, since you're just making it harder for future generations. Pies are now more important than ever, and you should never be eating carrots after ~6-10 generations when you get your sheep pen established. You should also never put carrots in pies (sometimes acceptable if it's a 2nd ingredient).
baskets decay, so first you destroy fertile soil, 2 fertile soil for one basket + 4 pies & then the basket itself is useless
while with the same 2 wheat you can make 8 fertile soil
if you're already into sheeps, then is making boxes a far better form of town storage than baskets & carts can be even carried around
about pies & their nutrition value compared to the other food options :
Carrot Pie = 5x4=20 ( Carrot=5 )
Berry Pie = 10x4=40 ( Gooseberry=3x6=18 !!! )
Rabbit Pie = 12x4=48 ( Cooked Rabbit=8 !!! )
Berry Carrot Pie = 13x4=52 ( Carrot=5+3x6=18Gooseberry=23 !!! )
Berry Rabbit Pie = 16x4=64 ( 3x6=18Gooseberry+Cooked Rabbit=8=26 )
Rabbit Carrot Pie = 16x4=64 ( Carrot=5+Cooked Rabbit=8=13 !!! )
Berry Carrot Rabbit Pie = 18x4=72 ( 3x6=18Gooseberry+Carrot=5+Cooked Rabbit=8=31 !!! )
Mutton Pie = 13x4=52 ( Cooked Mutton = 10 )
now about the effort :
* to collect berries needs only one step & no other effort or utensils
* to make a berry pie needs 20 steps, 19 steps for the pie crust alone
* to make mutton one needs 61 steps, one should keep in mind that one needs the entire smithing for that & all the efforts to tend sheeps properly in a confined space, on top of all that there is also THE KNIFE, which can be used & as it stands for now WILL BE USED by somebody, to kill not only sheeps but also people
* to make domesticated carrots one needs 19 steps & only either to hunt rabbits (22 steps) or make pottery (15 steps) to carry water, which is moderately easy to make
* & carrots are anyway there if there have to be sheeps
if i count the effort & tech advancement & care for the steps needed to get to the food then my equation which food is efficient goes like this :
BERRIES - YES, because easy to make
CARROTS - YES, because relatively easy to make
carrot pie - no (because not nutricious enough for all the effort & costs : wheat, soil, fire, plates)
berry pie - no (same)
berry-carrot pie - no (same)
Rabbit - only for limited use (needles, beginner settlement)
rabbit pie - no (same as rabbit & berry pie)
RABBIT-CARROT PIE - YES (that's one of the best gains for all the effort put into it)
rabbit-berry pie - no (similar to rabbit pie)
rabbit-berry-carrot pie - no (waste of berries)
MUTTON PIE - YES, because it's more practical to carry than mutton, not because it's more nutricious
MUTTON - YES, if in town
oc those are the optimal uses, one can always deviate from it if necessary or if the better options are not accessible atm
but one should know how much effort one has to put into something before judging the gain from the end result
people usually forget not only the effort needed before a gain but also the side effects
tending berries & carrots has moderate side effects & needs low effort
making carrot-rabbit pies has a high gain compared to all the effort needed
mutton & mutton pie has a high gain, especially if combined with carrot farming but it has also a high risk & high effort needed
wheat farming is very expensive, it consumes fertile soil
pies are in fact meantime in OHOL rather a luxury
domesticated wheat should be probably rather used for compost, it produces fertile soil
i use wild wheat for a basket if there are no tule reeds nearby
but i would never use a domesticated wheat for baskets, that's literal griefing of fertile soil
carrots are still the main food, especially if you stay in town
pies are good only if you are running about outside the town & there's not enough wild food
the whole thing is interdependend
you need baskets for carrots, use rather boxes instead
use wheat for compost & if flour remains from that, make pies, but only then

breezeknight wrote:abandon all your babies until you've learned to survive 3 times to 60
I feel that this is horrible advice, breezeknight. I get what you mean with it (that the new player should learn everything on his/her own without having to care about anyone else), but it's counter to what the game is about (cooperation, taking care of other's needs, aiming for slow but steady progress). The real skill to learn is how to take care of kids and inexperienced players and still survive. Doesn't matter if it takes longer, because it's more fun for everyone and it's a unique experience in gaming, which is getting lost if people play like you suggest here. Yes, I see that you mean it as a learning phase, but what you would learn from that phase (and what people trying to play as your baby would learn) are not the right things.
mikechar wrote:There is a kind of denial of service attack against new players, or players who want to play differently -- kill them.
You are putting words on what has been nagging me. It's a sad reality that many of the players who are actually loving (or love/hating) OHOL the most, are also inadvertently taking an active role in stifling the growth of the user base. Not all the time, but often enough. I would very much like to see the user base grow. Kill babies, code words for experienced players, kill inefficient players, ignore teaching... all of these methods are sucking the lifeblood out of the game and user base.
As Master Yoda says: The Dark Side is not stronger, only quicker, easier, more seductive. Power gamers: join the Light Side. Please don't be offended. You have the right to play how you wish. If you're active on the forum you probably have a vested interest in seeing the game grow though. It's through the new players that can happen, and through your positive attitude towards them. This attitude cannot only show in the forum and Discord, it needs to show in the game itself.
My 2 cents.
@Flintstone
i suggested to abandon all babies until you've learned the basics & know the value of the things needed, if you don't, then you are a liability to everybody & will probably just die yourself
it's not like experienced players survive every time they play, survival in OHOL depends on many things, not just in game experience
if you don't know few basics to be able to survive yourself, then you can't help nobody else, it's simple
i did not suggested to play on an unpopulated server because it's more elaborate to do
but if you manage, the result will be anyway the same, you won't be nurturing anybody else
& atm you are better off playing rather singleplayer, even if you are playing in a town where others are present
it's sad but that's the current reality, there are not enough players as whole
the community aspect is not set well, there are not enough, if any, in game tools nurturing community, already the necessity to use english language limits the popularity of the game & i think the lack of options against murder is preventing many from playing such a game, because it contradicts the core attractivity of a game about parenting & civilization
& YES
i also dislike that elitist attitude demanding to participate in discord & typing some code letters to signalize that you "know how to play", whatever that means ![]()
i even often suicide if i am being asked by the mother if "i know how to play" or if "i am new" or if i am confronted with some cryptic code used
it's elitist & it's going against what is intended, some players try to establish something remaining in a game which is built to play with things that wither
& you are absolutely right
this game needs new players & should stay unbiased towards new players, in game there shouldn't be any questions if a player is new or not
people have the right to be new & even act completely stupidly
my suggestions were meant only for those who want to start in the best way possible
in the time as i still played family, was a mother, an Eve & nurtured many babies i didn't ask if the player is new, it's pretty evidend anyway
& if a player wants to know something, then i tell & show, even now as a male,
i am always trying to be constructive & supportive, but i will do it only to the point where my own gameplay is not being disrupted
& that's why the killers in this game piss me way more off than any newbie inability to play
not the newbies are disruptive but those who kill
- - -
13 may 2018
no Eves
1 female baby - suicide
1 male baby - left for dead
1 male baby - lived as constructive society member till 60
14 may 2018
an Eve spawned in snow, found soon a good spot but all of sudden not only a wolf appeared nearby but two bears, so i run & tried to find a next spot, managed till 46, didn't have much fun with this run, just too frustrating to be constantly running
1 female baby to wild Eve - suicide
2 female babies in settlement - suicide
1 male baby in settlement - a deranged gameplay, didn't have much fun playing, died at 43 killed by a wolf trying to kill it
as clearly noticeable
my fun playing OHOL has decreased
there is no civilizaiton, there is no fun living in OHOL, just chore up the tech tree asap, nobody cares, all nice players went either away or fled to private servers
i prefer to play other games meantime
family tree is just not enough
not only killings & murders are demotivating
it's the entire senselesness of the endevour of survival again & again just to climb the same tech tree again & again & end up dead, in most cases even unnoticed, unsung, not even mourned
in OHOL there is not a bit culture included
civilizaiton without culture is no civilization at all !!!
& nobody fucking cares - that's some "civilization"
updated now to the latest version / 12 may 2018
basically it doesn't change anything since i am still an easy target to a murder
i still play as announced
- - -
but a big city is not Eden, it's hell ![]()
Eden is a garden Eden with no dangers & all ressources doubled or trippled
i am not sure if what players do wrong or when they cause frictions that those are actual errors
i rather think those are things players do who just don't care enough to be bothered to learn & those are not really new players, they just return to the game & dabble a little here & there & pave their way towards griefing without even knowing it ![]()
the atmospehere of the game atm is rather that it's too hard to survive, to learn, it's easier to disturb & just to mess things up & to have fun this way, not really griefing but still unintentionally disrupting
i like mostly now to live as a male baby in a settlement & when i'm old enough
i care first for my immediate lone survival & then
as second i look for things i know are needed to sustain as settlement - pouches, baskets, pies, bowls, plates, carrots, seeds, backpacks, carts
usually among those necessities there is at least one of those needed, so my goal in that life is then clear, that's this one life's objective
@Trick
few suggestions for new players to enjoy the game a little more
1. play as Eve to experience the things needed to survive
abandon all your babies until you've learned to survive 3 times to 60
io to learn how to survive you should consider to study few basic things outside the game

if you prefer to be taught in game by other players then you should prepare yourself to be very patient, most of the players just won't do it
if you play this way it will be a very slow progress
2. play as male baby in a rather smallish to middle settlement, beginner settlements require quick handling of things, indeed Eves have no time left to teach, big settlements are often either too scattered or too confusing
3. be prepared for being murdered, io to avoid it - run away
