Could you explain this more? I don't understand this idea.

a shovel would be used instead of 40 times now 60 tops
it could still break already with the 20th use but the probability to break soon within the initial 40 uses would be diluted because the pool to choose random the breakage would be bigger, namely 60

if 50% sounds too big, one could extend it to a lower number, 25%, in the case of the shovel it would be then a pool of 50 uses to break sometime inbetween

#627 Re: Main Forum » Randomizing tool breakage? » 2018-04-25 18:05:50

the breakage like with UncleGus' mod sounds ok to me

one could maybe include a minimum breakage number, like after 3 uses first

other than that, since objects with many possible uses are usually used in a settlement not only by one person but by many so if i use it i never know if it was already used that many times to break with my use already

to make all that less breakeable you could also up the number of final breakage for every object by 50%, this would enlarge the pool of possible breakage for any tool & make it this way seem less random

As long as I'm exposing weird useful bugs that Jason should probably fix, here's another one: Your temperature only updates when you stop moving. If you are planning a long journey, go to a desert and search for a tile with perfect temperature. Then start your journey and never stop moving (either by spam-clicking or holding down left click). You will be at perfect temperature even passing over long snow biomes! It will be quite a long time before you need to eat.

those exploits should be probably fixed

anyway, i didn't use any exploits, just dangerously straight forward attack lol

#629 Re: Main Forum » Biome temperature/Player skill » 2018-04-24 19:54:04

i tried to care originally for every kid, now i portion, also because the last updates made the life harder so either few survive or all die

#630 Re: Main Forum » Biome temperature/Player skill » 2018-04-24 19:29:27

don't care so much for the others,
either they learn how to survive & that this game relies on the skill of everybody or they will just die & die again & maybe even drag you down with them

i do not explain much as mother, i started now to portion my babies according to the actual food supply, i try not to be any nuissance as kid, i don't ask usually what a job is there to do, i just take my time to evaluate the problem zones myself, i remember to eat, i remember to set the marker !!! & then i do my best

usually people die left & right around me, especially in smaller settlements, indeed only very few survive on their own, everybody playing OHOL has to learn it themselves

if you care for every kid popping out, then you'll probably all end up dead soon
the chance to stay alive is indeed higher if you care for a handful only & refuse the other, only if some of the first die, then you can keep another one alive

about the biomes
many seem not to know that to stand by the fire & in desert is good for them, i had mothers puting me as baby into the snow, mothers taking me out of the desert, i had other kids telling me that the balanced temperature is the best not the high one & i saw mothers cloth their babies in full fur while those stood in the desert - so yeah lol
i just take care of myself mainly, i think that's the best way to support everybody, just not to be an idiot

#631 Re: Main Forum » How to survive a farm collapse and how to avoid it in the first place » 2018-04-24 19:07:26

just evaluate how many people the food in the area in reach can support & then you know how many kids you can actually afford as a female at the given moment & then stick to it

but if there are several potential mothers, then it gets complicated, because probably there will be overpopulation & nobody really will want to farm, nobody knows how to make compost (i myself didn't make compost since the worms arrived, so i do not expect others to know better), wells, should they have water will be probably soon driven to dry out & yes, the old nuissance of the seeding field

it all depends on if you want to care for those who don't care for nobody, for you neither
or if you care to survive yourself first io to be able to support others with your work later

also the scenarios in the settlements are every time very different
sometimes there is someone who actually can make pies & is efficient, sometimes you have to rely mainly on berry bushes, sometimes you have to sacrifice the rabbits & cook them instead to make pies & sometimes you're lucky to have cactus fruits in reach

i think in the end, everybody playing OHOL has to learn how to farm & how to evaluate the food situation, has to be at all conscious about it

#632 Re: Main Forum » i've killed my first bear » 2018-04-24 17:16:52

@xRaenboe
at some point you will have to
if you spawn as Eve badly, then run through many biomes & come at last to a fairly ok place where you want to settle & then the wolves appear, that's your chance to kill wolves instead raising kids
also it comes rather handy to know how to handle bow n arrow if a settlement with other people is being harrassed by animals, it's oc too late to make the weapons first after the bear is there killing, it takes a while to make, especially the arrows
& yes, one has to go through the danger of being killed by your fellow people instead of bears, wolves & snakes tongue

thank you @JS

#633 Re: Main Forum » connection problem » 2018-04-24 17:09:27

connection lost today :

female, 33 years, was in a big town, bears were north, many rabbits, big farm, many doors, i had few kids
male, 4 years, big town again, bears near, not enough food, nearly starved, was about to eat the berry & then CL

#634 Re: Main Forum » [suggestion] Wider tools variety on low technology level » 2018-04-24 14:16:58

i would like to have a full range stone age tools,
but it's probably not gonna happen sad

& we would need finally something to carry either the baby (baby sling) or the basket (balance on head)
also would be nice to have a reed/wheat alternative to the rabbit skin backpack, less durable but otherwise working the same

btw suggestions here in

after i killed already a couple of wolves in some of the previous runs i wanted for some time now to kill a bear
last time i spawned among several bears but what was missing were ponds with geese, so no arrows, no killing bears

but today, i didn't even intended to kill a bear, i spawned as a male kid, so with plenty of time on my hands & the mother was kind enough to nurture me to my self-reliance, then she went off with the second kid & was after some time no more to be seen
later in that area, much much later, years went by & i tried to go by as well, the settlement was once a big one but everything went to pieces, nobody was living there anymore & only few useful things remained
food was low, so i wanted to make a small berry bushes farm since the old one was dried up completely, also milkweed was oc very hard to come by, so i made also a small milkweed farm & while i was roaming about i've seen a bear in that area, but since lots of stuff was missing in that settlement, especially food so i cared more for my immediate survival than killing bears
i managed to make a backpack with the few furs & some freshly catched rabbits, was about to water the milkweed when the bear appeared for third time now & someone was chasing him with a bow but as it turns out this must have been an inexperienced hunter, since you can't kill a bear with one arrow
the hunter was killed, the bear remained still around with the arrow in his back, so i decided to gather all the necessary stuff for new arrows, i found even a bow in the settlement, so didn't need to make a new one, the hunter himself must have dropped his bow somewhere else, i didn't come across his, i also didn't want to get killed by the bear while i searched for the bow, that would have been pathetic
after the arrows were made & i had enough cactus fruit & berries to sustain my hunger i searched again, now very carefully for the bear to not waste my life due to my clumsyness
i've managed to shoot the bear one time & to run off as fast i could into an open field, i was very carefull this time because the last time i managed to shot a bear i got mixed up between some nearby trees & that's where the bear got me then, but not this time
this time i replenished my hunger bar, clasped the third arrow for the bear next to the bow & shot eventually the bear dead, my very first bear, hurray !

if you come across a skinned bear, a bear skin, a backpack with one arrow in it, that's the scenery of the whole crime where the first hunter was killed by the bear & the bear then by me
you find my remains near the freshly planted berry bushes

then i suppose Jason also doesn't want to enrich the gameplay by adding stone age tools roll

if so, then those decisions are making the game too coarse to care,
all that on top of all the ommitions regarding non material essentials beginning already with a family tree

this makes me sad sad

i really wonder
what's the point of having to rush through the tech tree without any care or understanding why things are there & why they were developed & used, some of them for not only thousands but for millions of years !
indeed a game where the players enjoy more to grief & murder than to participate constructively is a symptom that it's not at all about civilization sad

depends how Jason wants to have the game

if it should be more RL oriented leaning towards dystopic then the things ought to be finite & one of the goals of the game is then to preserve the few ressources left

if it should be more gamey, then it ought to be balanceable into at least one stable state if not several

#638 Re: Main Forum » How to deal with the carrot sponge once and for all » 2018-04-23 06:07:36

@KucheKlizma
temperature affects hunger, hunger is basically a signal of a low energy level, low temperature means an external generally lowered energy level, which has to be compensated by a higher food consumption or by a more nutricient food, like more fat eg

so the hunger bar could be directly remade to a energy bar

a 3 or maybe 5 boxes of overeating could function, i am not sure
but it should be probably tested

i don't dislike the decay,
it just needs to be a little toned down & the remains need to be kindling & maybe even tinder, so of some use & not cluttering uselessly the space

i hope the connection lost issue will be resolved soon

#640 Re: Main Forum » What do you name your kids? » 2018-04-22 08:39:15

i still don't care as long there is no family trees option

i name if i have the time or the kid wants desparately to have a name, usually they die anyway, so what's the harm lol

had now several noobs trying to name a kid as male or grandmother, yep ...
maybe one day lol

i understand Jason completely wanting to stay independent, there are pros & cons to it
for not so streamlined ideas there are more pros than cons, OHOL is made definitely along a not streamlined idea

It would be cool to see a Nomad update, where feral eve's would hunt different wildlife for their meat, bones and hides instead of surviving off gooseberries and onions until they get a farm going.

I tried being a nomad and found these (hopefully) small changes would make it much more viable:

1. allow a flint chip to be applied to a skinned rabbit to get rabbit bones and raw rabbit meat (which you could eat if Jason implemented potentially getting sick)
2. allow babies to fit in a backpack (at least up to a certain age)
3. spawn at least some cactus with fruit
4. spawn at least some rabbits with families (this one is not essential for nomads who are willing to go "scorched earth" but it would be nice)

Nomads have a lot of potential - for example, stealing carts (which could also hold kids) and pies from villages to sustain bigger families - but right now that playstyle is completely hobbled by having to harvest twelve milkweed (not counting the snare or thread) just to start making backpacks.

eating raw meat doesn't make one sick, it's just not as nutricious, it costs more energy to digest it, if minced before eating it should be nearly as nutricious as cooked meet

would be great if one day we had in OHOL the option to live before the invention of fire

i want to play the whole spectrum of human civilization, not just to take the steps of development as given
i want to experience what actually has driven people to advance & that's why we urgently need culture as an addition in OHOL & not just bare functionality with some fancy useless monuments

i also would like to have all necessary tools to be made mainly out of stone & wood, with a seldom usage of milkweed & therelike,
i would like to be able to live stone age like, without the necessity to rush towards smithing
there should be other advantages to smithing than the plain necessity to survive
a small family with a steady sustainable lineage should survive on stone & wood alone, with little binding materials, while farming, gathering & hunting parallel for food & clothes

i do not like the rush we are having now in OHOL, it's boring & producing every town to look the same, the life to lead is painting by numbers, if one wants to survive for a longer period of time, then are oven, pottery & smithing unavoidable, which is a shame

there should be a difference between progress with growth of the populace number & sustainable life with a steady number of participants
imo, civilization has to contain both options, progress & sustainability, to be able to react to the unpredictable io not only to barely survive but also to thrive, to live a fulfilling life
civilization is about thriving & not surviving, surviving is demotivating if practiced for a long period of time

stone age was not all just bare survival, it was a culture
same as nomads are not just about survival, it's a culture, a way to lead a life

& yes, the amount of milkweed needed now combined with its slow growth & its rareness on the map is a pain in the butt tongue

what i also would like is a rainforest biome, with plenty of options to eat & craft
i would like to live more wild, to have the option to live on a low level of civilization for as long as it doesn't bore me
i would like to have different ways to lead a life & not just that one way we have now
i would like to have boredom driving me towards advancement in civilization & not the necessity

#643 Re: Main Forum » connection problem » 2018-04-22 06:44:53

since yesterday, so far EVERY successful life ended up at young age in connection lost - EVERY

since yesterday i didn't manage EVEN ONCE to live to old age after i survived the babyhood, because i died then eventually by connection lost

I guess Jason implemented server decay, too.

that might be the probable reason why lol

my count starting now :
male, middle age, met a second settlement - CL
male, 13 - CL
Eve, 44, several kids, many starved, survived mostly on cactus, two teenage sons - CL
male, 23, brought the first batch of rabbits into settlement - CL

#645 Re: Main Forum » The Male's Sonnet » 2018-04-20 12:47:11

i prefer to play as male,
no fuss with babies in most inconvenient moments, as male one has a chill time, as female it's just stressful

also as female the appreciation of the people around is not good enough to compensate for the inconveniences & limitations, i had to be as heartless as to leave my kids die to fulfill my freedom as female & to do what i want

& as long there is no family tree it's useless anyway to be Eve

i would really like some sort of improvement regarding carrying of babies, basket on head, or pregnancy, or baby sling,
or limitation to where & when getting a baby, something !

btw i suicide now as baby when i see a girl named Hope,
& in general i prefer to suicide if i am a baby girl because of the reasons mentioned tongue

Easy to counter if you are one of those who are not squeamish about carrying a knife or hiding a bow or two. I have run into to many people who just assume a knife is useless except for killing people.

They are fine with you giving them a new pair of snakeskin boots, never wondering how you got them.

Or taking that beautiful new horse for a ride, sometimes without asking, never wondering how you were able to "saddle" it.

They happily eat some mutton when they are starving never imagining how you killed the sheep that just fed their entire family.

If Jason want's us to have a more nomadic existence I think hunting need's to be more able to sustain an entire tribe like it did for ancient nomadic peoples with concomitant animal resources, perhaps the bison of north america?

I've been killed more than twice for making a knife or bow in front of power-trippers who want to be the only one with a weapon (or scarred people with a bad memory of a griefer...)

yes, did experienced this myself as well

i was once killed purely by paranoia or maybe indeed just hunger for power fired by fear

as i wrote in my other thread already, distrust has spread because of options to murder & punish

what this game needs are options for culture

only culture can save civilization, if fear wins, this game is dead, killed by distrust with nowhere to go
