You do have walls for a reason, to control access.  If you're worried about a griefer planting the wrong crop, put walls around the farm fields.  Only let the farmer in and out.  Post a guard by the door.  Tools getting stolen?  Do you leave your tools in real life laying on the ground?  No.  If you did, they would get stolen too!  So you put them in a tool shed.

The king always has a wall around his garden in real life.

But walls won't work if you can't threaten someone at the gate with violence to make them go away.

Gates in real life usually have two guards for a reason...

After thinking this over more, I think that most of the tools to solve these problems are in your hands, and a few more (like locks) will come in the future.

And these ARE the problems that civilization needs to solve.

Even modern civilizations are still trying to solve these problems.  Lots of murders in real life go unsolved.

I will work on the "can't stab a moving person" issue.  Running around shouldn't be a form of defense.

i would be very happy if there were farmers in OHOL, for now those are random people, looking like everybody else, maybe even nameless, how should i know how skilled or trustworthy ?
i really hope some day we'll get actual professions, IRL not everybody can just waltz in & be a farmer where carrots are

similar is with guards
i have still first to see a town in OHOL with actual guards, so far everything is chaos, stuff scattered everywhere because people just try to survive
but i am already happy if there is no murderer running free & killing people

IRL there are options against murder, violence, assault,
in OHOL it's just running away, which might be the same dangerous as just getting killed, because of bears, snakes or lack of food & clothing in a cold biome
i am not against murder in general in OHOL, i just want options for the victims, the kick for killers in OHOL is to kick out other players out of the town, out of the game,
it's power, they shouldn't be that powerful, they are more powerdul than the kings & queens, killers are the most powerful in OHOL, followed by griefers, what civilization can come out of that ?

#652 Re: Main Forum » Deciding who has a baby » 2018-04-18 00:59:30

Eve should get the first baby after the home marker is set, before that it's very stressful

babies should come rather if mother has clothes, at least a backpack
or the temperature is high, otherwise rather not, kids die anyway far more often in cold
clothes are an indication of a well cared for settlement

also it would be nice if babies wouldn't be born far away from the home marker, otherwise a female has always to stay close to the village's center,
i've got so many kids as i was getting something for the village, sometimes from even far away, in snow, that's very unfortunate, i've lost once a cart because i had to head back to town with the new born kid

if milkweed is regrowing in 60 min first then it's a waste of time to bother with that procedure, one player won't be seeing it regrow within one life time
it's even waste of time to try to make a milkweed farm, it wouldn't be a waste if it would regrow in 30 min & if the farm would be kept for future generations but since it gets wiped out anyways, so why to conserve or build ?

you can type parts of long sentences & then scroll through those & hit enter
they will come out anew without the neccessity to type the same stuff again & again

about long sentences in general - it's covering the screen,
already now if two stand together & both say smthng then you have hard time to understand, lol

If murdering/griefing/low-level playing is a problem, just make it impossible. Disable murder, remove "wrong stage" of milkweed, forbid eating when they aren't hungry enough for it, allow dried ponds to refill, etc. You can balance this by raising difficulty on the different aspects.

Of course, these would make the game less hardcore or complex, and some players may feel their pride taken away.

Jason, eventually you have to choose between wants of you, griefers, hardcores and casuals.

Personally, I'm not too embarrassed to play a less-fallible game and don't hear too much voice insisting the necessity of allowing "obviously wrong" choices.

Just a personal voice.

OHOL fails bacause it is not attractive enough for hardcore but it allows easily enough for casuals to be just target practice
every casual player with just a little self-respect will stop participating under those circumstances lol
casuals are not just stupid people, too stupid to kill others or too cowardly to kill, contrary to the believe of hardcores tongue

since yesterday played so far only one game in a settlement with others
& already there was a murderer, the settlement struggled already to keep the people alive & then came the murderer on top of this pitiful situation

meantime it's apparently far more fun to be the murderer than a brave citizen,
babies suicide all the time, murderer are in every town

#660 Re: Main Forum » 57 Gooseberry plants for the future, and no kids come into the tribe » 2018-04-16 08:47:14

just wake up, you're playing a multiplayer not an AI singleplayer

atm there are 80 players, mostly on only two servers spread across many sectors of the huge maps
so yeah, lack of female babies is the direct result
use the time to spawn as Eve & learn the ropes

yes

life in OHOL is so short, wasting the last moments on running around & typing is utterly useless
most of the time i neither know nor i care who the murderer was, often there's not even a name, lol
but i care very much to stay alive for those meager minutes of my remaining in game life

any form of revenge in OHOL is superficial gestures, if a player sets out to spend his in game time with killing, then he will respawn
only making murder rather unattractive will help, softening the consequences for the victim will help, giving the victims a chance to survive will help
what doesn't help is concentrating on killers & adding more killing options into the game

burdock & wild onion are the newest food additions with the last update,
they do not respawn, do not regrow & cannot be domesticated
they are there solely to ease the strain of early starvation for Eve & her kids, you can safely eat them
same with the shrooms growing in empty soil pits, though those are usualy not present in early stages

you should farm only carrots, preferably from wild seeds (see my longer post above)

So there are still asshats out there just ruining villages for kicks and the game seems to favor griefers even after all the updates.

The new wounding mechanic is pretty useless in my opinion. I have found out recently that when you are wounded you cannot hold/use any items.  You can only run around crying about getting stabbed. Well what if you could use items when wounded?  In my opinion that would be a great deterrent to murders because if you had a weapon handy you'd be able to just retaliate and kill the sadsacks before they go on a murder rampage and wipe out a village.  To me it would at least provide better defense as opposed to having a guard that just gets targeted first anyway.

I know there are other ways to grief but here Im focussed more on the murdering swine.

with your suggestion you are forgetting that,
if an initial killer was wounded by a brave citizen, he still could kill another one, that means, one killer could kill at least two even if killed as opposed to now when he is unable to

talking about excallation by tools & options insufficient to address the real problem

#664 Re: Main Forum » Armed citizens? » 2018-04-15 12:20:05

& about killing griefers & killers

it's
useless

you can't controll who the killer will be
a killed killer can respawn as a new baby or an Eve
you never know, they all look the same

& people kiling a killer are still a killer & are being killed
everybody who killed is a killer & will be seen by those who didn't witness the whole thing as just that, a mean killer & not a protector
& who does in this game with the limited view & limited tools actually get the whole picture of a situation going on ?

thus useless

besides
i started to play this game because it was promissed to be about building civilization
instead it's a killers simulator in pseudo historic setting tongue

@Lavea

i played on one private server by Norgg, that server is not on the latest update
https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=381

the problem with private servers is they have to be up to date, if not then you cannot access

there's one server with PW protection & PvP disabled, but i don't know if it's up to date, one has to use discord to contact for PW

And to me it would not be for kicks but more to prove a point.  If it makes me an idiot then and idiot I am.  To me it's far more idiotic doing the same thing over and over again with the same outcome and just hoping one day things will change. I'd much rather take some action, any action to help fuel the need for that change as opposed just keep on getting screwed over.

If you have a better idea, I'm open to suggestions.

yeah, the real problem is the lack of creative tools & options in OHOL & the easy way to kill & grief

Jason should have introduced cultural tools & options before or at the least together with the option & tools for murder & griefing
without it's all going just down the drain

OHOL has actually mutated into a "sadist fun kick" as you've put it
so i wouldn't advice to be playing it for now

my experience yesterday was sobering, i am not playing games to be victim of bored, frustrated, angry low lives

14 apr 2018

on that singular day i witnessed several murders &
i was killed two times

one time in a town

the second time in a settlement i was the Eve founder of, i was killed by the person who was my own child i nurtured & cared for sacrificing my own gameplay,
since that experience my gameplay changed drastically - I DISTRUST NOW EVERY IN GAME PLAYER !!! since every player can be my killer
i played since those two incidents only few times as Eve on an empty server, i've build two beginner settlements & learned a little new gameplay stuff i didn't get to before

but OHOL is not playable for me anymore
i do not trust the remaining OHOL players anymore
i have no fun playing this game while i have to watch out constantly for murder, either as witness or as victim

the players' base is dwindling because there is just not enough tools & options to protect from murder in a peaceful way,
if i am forced to become a killer myself, then i could be playing, if i wanted to, games that are more diverse than OHOL, more beautiful & more lively
i started playing OHOL because it promissed to be a game about building civilization - it isn't

OHOL in its current state is a murder & griefing simulator in a pseudo ancient setting
it has little to do with building civilization
creative, constructive, cultured & peaceful people are not being supported enough while murder is easy & the game forces all still remaining players to become killers themselves

i will be wrapping things up around OHOL for me,
i will examine the next couple of updates,
i will come back to actually playing OHOL again only if something substantially supportive will be added to the completely missing culture in OHOL

afaik, bushes with the last berry present replenish faster than without any

Excellent advice in this thread and in breezeknight's post with the exception of the above section which merits some clarification.  The wild gooseberry respawn timer is 10 minutes from last activation regardless of how many berries are present, so berries will regrow at the same rate no matter how few are left on the plant.  However, it is true that the timer is "reset" with every activation, meaning that if a berry is taken off a bush that had 1 minute to go until regrowing the timer is reset back to the full 10 minutes.  Bearing in mind that wild gooseberries "rot" and despawn five minutes after being plucked, it can be a good idea to harvest a few berries at the same time.  For maximum efficiency in an area with multiple berry bushes, as fragilityh14 mentioned, it's best to not focus on harvesting one bush at a time and instead rotate between all available plants.

Domestic berry bushes are a little different.  Their berries never "rot" once plucked and the bushes only begin counting down towards a new harvest after all berries have been removed and the bushes have been watered.  If not watered within 7 minutes, however, stripped domestic bushes will die.  Players should thus never harvest the last domestic gooseberry unless they are willing and able to quickly water the plant.

ty for clarification, very helpful

#672 Re: Main Forum » Dont build wells! build cisterns » 2018-04-14 12:54:55

yeah, agree with that

in every still populated town i come into, wells are always dry,
if one gets lucky then one well is still with water, if it's a deep well that is, shallow wells are 100% dry
in whole i encountered only few towns with cisterns
the only wells filled with water are in towns void of any populace lol

cistern is always better than a well because it doesn't break, you can't break it, if it is empty you always can fill it with water, a dry well remains for a long time just that - dry

but people don't build cisterns mainly for one reason only, it's the bowl of plaster, complicated to make apparently

maybe the situation with wells would improve if there was a sign how much water is still available in the well,
someone made a suggestion about that already, it did get 25 votes https://www.reddit.com/r/OneLifeSuggest … r_is_in_a/

yeah, the knives

handle with EXTREME caution !!!

do not place within one tile reach - NEVER !!!

if you see someone carry a knife, move away
if someone you trust wants to give you a knife - move two tiles away, just to be safe

but as i know people, probably everybody will prefer to have a dramatic story than my wisecracker suggestions lol

#674 Re: Main Forum » Update 75: The Monument Update » 2018-04-14 09:08:30

it's a good update

i like several of its contents very much

the additional diverse food sources are great & make the gameplay more rich

i also like the ability to replant griefed berry bushes

i was already mudered in the new way, with some time to live afterwards - doesn't change anything imo, maybe the chance to tell that one was murdered but
this will end up in new griefing, griefers running around & telling others that they were murdered, lol

it would be nice if one had a chance to recover, eg by eating the shroom smile
i am not against in game murder, makes it realistic,
but griefers shouldn't impact the game more than those playing constructively
& to take another player's ability to go on is a huge impact on the other players
murder is just too easy in OHOL, way too easy than in any RL ever
