You do know you can just pick lock the doors and loot the base instead of walling it off right?

Put chest next to door
Put lock and key A on chest
Try key on door
If doesn't work file key
Use key on chest
Blank the lock using a hammer on the lock and key A you get back from the chest
Use file on blank lock and key x2 to get lock and key B.

Rinse and repeat.

The thought of perma banning someone for hoarding is goofy especially when it's easy to pick locks in game (Minus the fact it takes skill slots to do.) Just loot their base THEN wall it off if you're salty about that goof ass.

My current preferred playstyle is to see how long I can go without using any tool slots.

Not surprisingly, it is very easy to accomplish this goal if you do almost nothing to help your village.   It is significantly more challenging to work around the limited tool slots to try to accomplish something worthwhile.   And it is nearly impossible to accomplish certain things without using a tool slot, like complex smithing jobs and oil collection, since it is very hard to locate who already knows a tool in your village without any in-game indicators of other players' skills/professions.    Walking around and asking people if they know how to make a loom doesn't get many positive responses.

I also intentionally avoided studying the list of tools in detail, so I could have the fun of discovering what objects used up tool-slots, just like a new player experiencing OHOL for the first time.     I was rather amused to discover that a DRY WELL is considered a "tool".    That made me laugh really hard.     And also "hot coals" as a tool.     Really?   In what universe does a hot coal make sense as a "tool"?    And I made the mistake of putting a bow saw into a box and "learned" bow saw.   But I used stakes to build a long road without learning "stakes".    Weird.

List is currently all sorts of mucked up and 100% needs revisited.

-Froe isn't a tool but something like hot coals, tongs, or covering a kiln is ???
-Chiseling a big stone and making cut stones isn't a skill but cutting a block from part of a rock is ???
-Healing people is supposed to be something that uses the pads/sterilized knife/thread skills but you only need to specifically know the knife skill to treat wounds unless it's a snake bite (and those are almost always fatal anyways.)

Plus all the other bugs that can be found on the github. Tools really either need to be scrapped as it's likely to be a 2 month project of updating things in a slow painful way or going to always be a bunch of nonsense. I understand why people thought this was a good idea but it's not remotely implemented correctly and honestly is it worth doing what we're doing the same slow updates to fix the tool skills like we've done with oil?

I think not.

Well the last family survives apocalypse and gets a head start since all other family's start with just one female

So stealing the last resources and start a yum chain is a smart move (imo)

That doesn't work because everyone suicides out of the old families to start new families. Even with a heads up on females with the start of the new arc after two hours the "winning" family was dead. Without looking at logs of each arc I would assume almost every surviving family from the previous arc dies off during the time of the Eve window due to all the people wanting to play Eve vs being in the oldest running lineage.

Arc reset = mass suicide. Mass suicide = dead lineage.

So by stealing/killing/whatever you prolong your own lineage for an hour or two before falling victim to all the spawning Eves who will siphon babies away from your lineage during the open Eve window.

Ending the arc is easy. Learning to work together to prolong the inevitable is hard.

#729 Re: Main Forum » Dude, where's my well? » 2019-11-03 15:03:13

The biggest issue this arc is he didn't push the tap out fix and I believe there's one well this time around. Spent an hour leading the Thunder family on a nomad search to find any spring site or well for about 56 minutes until we finally reached the one along the south side of the map.

This is my first time experience the well search instead of being one of the people who makes the wells and let me tell you - If you have no idea where the wells are located on the map its hell searching around. It made for a good one time experience but if the game was going to be like that an hour after reset I would just avoid playing or /die until I reached a well.

Since none of the springs were completely dry we just assumed there was a well somewhere along the line or fresh springs somewhere ( we walked east to west and then south, and finally back east before we found the town which we only found due to dug big rocks.)

Unless he really refines it (and even still) I think this is just something that should be scrapped. Keep the oil one because it helps with finding the tapped tarry spot but limiting wells via the drying method is just not very good. If he's going to stick to the limiting water game plan he should limit spring sites instead as this allows for people to start up but doesn't kill all the viable spots on the map in <30 minutes of the arc being started.

Experience wise 8/10. Was alright but wouldn't do it again.
Gameplay wise 1/10. Hour long walking simulator has been done better before.

There's still a working newcomen on the map but most people aren't near/around it. Oil is gone but people still have plenty of ponds to fetch water from if they wanted to keep farming like normal.

Good players always survive off of wild food, newer players are definitely dying a lot easier than normal since it's harder for them to get food and depend on those willing to make decent food. Towns in generally are just cemeteries as new players die, some people are trying to hunt gingers, and lack of skilled players willing to carry the end of the arc is lowering.

People are doing the normal "eNd tHe aRc." thing where they start killing off the weaker of two families. Game is far from being completely unlivable but we've reached the point where people willing to grit their teeth and keep going getting outnumbered by the people wanting reset.

Game is still 100% livable without oil. We still have a working newcomen water pump, there's still tons of natural soil, ponds are out the kazoo, and we still have untapped iron veins.

Get the tinfoil off your head please.

It's purposeful he made squash turn into pumpkins to reduce having to add in another plant to a biome + everything that comes with it. It was the quickest way to introduce a pumpkin without a bunch of work. I'm sure pumpkins aren't going to be inedible forever and this isn't some attempt to fuck food up so much as its for a quick fun update.

My biggest concern is this is one of these things he isn't going to refine until months down the line like quite a few updates. We still don't have all the steel stuff finished being recyclable and that update was released in July yikes. It's bad enough tool limits basically make Eve useless in her camp but I guess it brings early game down to par with the rest of the game (we can't have the only good part be early game so lets make it mediocre to match mid/late game.)

Now the question:  how the heck can you go 62 hours without running out of oil?

Remember, I cut the expected oil production in half for this week....

Oil is a luxury. We didn't even have all the wells dry as someone found a deep well with water this morning/last night. Instead of fooling around like this for the next month run an arc with no tarry spots and see how long it lasts then do one tarry spot, etc. At the very least it'd be interesting to see how people adapt around the water stopping after newcomen tech and to see how hard they buckle down.

You've still got people out here draining ponds to survive and everything else. You might as well give us one big sucky arc so you can get some real data instead of slowly dialing it down every week.

Dodge, there are no family homes because people have no reason to care about family.

As others have said before there aren't homes because houses are basically aesthetic items you build to make things look nice. The static heat bonus you get is basically useless because no activity requires you to stay inside a building the entire time. Rooms are too small for you to really care as anything bigger than 6x6 suffers from cold areas so why would you make a giant room that takes up resources and space for the sake of it just looking nice?

Having rooms or building in the current game isn't much different than if we used the old trash pits to divide up animal pens. Sure walls would look nicer but trash pits would keep things out and always we easily expanded.

Unless you add activities that take time like fishing where you sit in one spot for an extended period of time buildings will always be useless. However, if you do create something where you stand in one spot we've already discovered the most optimal one tile building set up which means you'll see a bunch of random ass T shaped buildings instead of square ones.

As someone who has built my own personal home in different villages on the server in the past it makes for a cool activity but between buildings basically being useless and not having real decoration options why would people build houses? Lol.

Could you only learn one category?
If you can learn two you already have most tools

As I said before in another thread just break it down into basic tier and advanced.

A basic cook does things related to hot coals cooking for example and an advanced cook uses ovens, cooks on flat rocks, and can butcher sheep.
A basic smith can make steel tools and an advanced smith does newcomen related tech.
Basic tailor does rabbit fur and can shear sheep and make thread while an advanced tailor does wolf hats, seal skin vests, snakeskin boots, saddles, and loom stuff.
Basic carpentry skill is making bell tower bases, cutting stones, making boards, making mallets, cutting discs and putting up walls. Advanced construction is taking down walls, installing doors, installing floors, making boxes, making slot boxes, making rail carts + rails and carts.
Basic farming is planting seeds, taking buckets of water out of a well, tilling soil with a stone hoe. Advanced farming is steel hoe, shovel, making compost, breeding animals, catching animals.

You get the drift. You can add more categories such as animal husbandry, (breeding, catching, etc.) transport (horses, horse carts, cars, and planes) or expand skills. Give players 4 skill slots which means you can do two things really well or four things alright. This cuts down on so many useless skills that have one use while still giving people distinct jobs.

The point is as of right now it's possible to do dumb stuff in a really bad way considering all the trap options.

#742 Re: Main Forum » Jason here are some quick changes that could make tools better » 2019-10-31 00:51:25

Just put things into categories instead of making 60+ tools that have one to two uses.

Newcomen tech is incredibly important but once you basically make an engine you probably just kill yourself because you have a lot of wasted slots. I mean right now it's possible to create a skill set up that has zero applicable uses which is silly and we're now at the amount of tools + slots that Eve is basically a baby factory which is just plain awful.

I'm not against limiting things or trying new things but actively making the most polished part of the game worse for zero payoff is just bad.

-Shorter lifespans aren't really a negative and honestly at times are a positive as you avoid time spent infertile.
-Longer lifespans also aren't always a positive either. Who wants to live and be feeble when suicide gets you int a fresh body?
-Birth defects that are bad just means you reroll (blindness) while stuff like being mute has no real drawback besides the inability to name children.
-The head drooping can be done already in your settings. Don't like a sagging head? Just change some files. Don't like your head on your body? That's doable too.
-Speed is interesting but then it just becomes a game of killing yourself when you lose speed as you age since you're already suffering from some sort of negative. Better to enjoy the benefits and move on rather than try to dig out of a hole.

#745 Re: Main Forum » If genetic fitness actually matters, is life limit still necessary? » 2019-10-30 20:04:25

Back to the start of the thread the life limit is clearly harmful in cases where the end is near as babies keep spawning themselves into mothers who won't feed them thus running them out of lives. However, if your meme score is low enough you might as well just kill yourself mid life to get around the tool limit.

For example: You want to help make your town an engine so they've got water and what not. First life learn tongs, firing kiln, hammer, newcomen hammer, roller.

Convert all your iron to steel
Smash one iron for the tank with your hammer
Make your Pistons and rods.
Kill yourself.

Get reborn and learn bore, lathe, knife, oven, free space.

Bore two pistons
Bore three rods
Lathe the stuff
Fetch rubber from wilderness
Combine stuff together
Finish engine.

Kill yourself again and now start actually playing. Unless your gene score is high enough to have 9 slots then killing yourself is probably the better option due to the increase chance of fuck ups when introducing a second person to engine making. Fucking up also means you need +1 tool slot bringing your required slots to 10 which is the max slots atm.

So long story short, score only really matters if you're playing a single life in a single sitting. If you're going to binge and play a few lives it doesn't really matter to have meme score and you'll actively be sinking someone else's score to get around the restrictions of tool slots.

#746 Re: Main Forum » Donkeytown mechanics » 2019-10-30 01:00:42

He lowered again to 5-10 max.

I do think it's problematic to have the trolls be able to curse trade with you and it actually negatively effect you. I've had this happen exactly once while playing but after instantly suiciding I was back in the rift so I can also back up the whole issue of cursing trolls can negative effect a normal player.

Players are dumb this isn't something new. We've had issues with dumb players attacking good guys due to seeing blood and not thinking through or listening to the situation. Hell, we see this all the time where "medics" heal anyone who is wounded instead of asking about what is happening even with a large group of players saying don't. Either way players are dumb and you should expect that you're going to run into dumb players constantly.

In relation to the town thing it's good that towns are close as it raises the strength of curses overall. Minor griefs who are caught can easily be banished out of the rift for being foolish enough to do things in plain sight. Of course you risk good guys getting cursed but if you're willing to remove trolls you just have to bite the bullet.

Then why have you left it like this for so long? People have asked you to give out Eve tokens for either living to old age multiple times or some other positive way instead of making the only way to Eve be annoying a bunch of players.

The only way to play Eve without using /die constantly during the Eve window is:

1. Be one of the first people on the server after reset.
2. Be banned from all the birth mothers while the Eve window is open (which is likely impossible at the start of the arc when there's like 10+ families.)
3. Be cursed from all the families but not have so many curses that you end up in dt (unlikely.)

You don't get to play Eve if you want to play fair.

Then it would be a game of wiping out all the dry/thoroughly dry spots on the map to make sure the wells can only exist on the picked locations.

It'd probably just be better to make it so everyone can have a well but limit it at the newcomen pump which then thoroughly dries out the wells and limits everything. At least then the Eve window wouldn't be a 30 minute race followed up by hide and seek.

It's not called meme score for no reason. Play as Eve on a server reset without map wipe? Easiest first place you will ever get in the game (I've done this two or three times now.) It's mostly luck based on whether or not your kids are smart and how willing they are to live in whatever scenario you've given them.

#750 Re: Main Forum » How to ruin the Eve experience » 2019-10-29 15:51:35

It definitely feels much worse to play Eve now. I don't think most Eve players want to be useless in the sense they basically have to be a baby spawner since limited skills means they can't really do anything but farm without too much trouble. You're basically just the kindling guy which is a pretty feels bad situation compared to what you could do before.
