I'm not sure why you think the fact that the social structures that have emerged are cooperative rather than competitive is a bug rather than a feature!  You've demonstrated that human beings aren't all inherently selfish and awful but do want to cooperate with their neighbors. and that's kind of nice, right? smile

But I think that if more competition is something you think should exist, the best unit to think it terms of is not the family but the town.  That's certainly how players seem to think, at least the ones who are really invested in it.  You hear people talking about "the good of the town," "the future of the town," "protecting the town."  Not, generally speaking ,"the good of my family," etc.  At least not once the town grows past the point where the town population and your immediate family are essentially the same thing.

I think part of this is because buildings are unique, the most creative permanent thing you can make in the game. They way you set things up is unique. If you think you did a neat job, you want that set-up to persist. Maybe the answer is more player creativity and choice. Another factor is I know in my next life I could be born in the town that I'm "at war" with so war is even more destructive than normal.

This is a bit like an SF story I wrote about a future "utopia" that had one day every year where you had to live someone else's life (they were VR people who had been uploaded so this was possible) The idea of the switching was to make everyone aware of what others deal with and thus more considerate. In the story it works (up to a point) Because the wealthy find ways to get around it. Since people who don't like rich people would do as much as possible to ruin their lives on the switching day, rich people would lock themselves in rooms located remote areas with no mirrors. That way the person taking over their body couldn't discover the wealthy person's identity and thus minimize damage...ok that was a tangent.

But, I have to say: forcing war into the game seems kind of sad and like a bit of a wag the dog situation to me. I'm not against wars happening, but it has to be organic or it will feel like every game I hate that forces you to fight puts a gun in your hand and the only option is shoot things. There are too many games like that, that funnel you in to violence. I like that violence is a choice and it's neat to me that it's one that most players don't make even if it's there. It's more meaningful than if the game forced you to be nice (which other game do as well)

I've had kids who were real jerks, they aren't my friends, nothing like a real child who tends to look up to and follow their parent. There isn't any deep reason to protect your kids over other because both could be just anybody and some of the time the valuable skilled helpful nice player isn't the one in your family. People favor their family and kid in real life because you have formed deep bond over years. In a game like this you have 4 min. That's nothing.

Kids, parents, family can be jerks in real life too, but often the parent knows them better, knows why they are like that again that year of bonding and building something shared.

So, it is about time.

Also not everyone is klanish even in real life. I don't think "feed my kid or some other" *is* and obvious question at all.

Oh. My mistake. It just seemed kind of dated and disconnected from the game.

#1104 Re: Main Forum » Why there are no wars » 2019-04-02 02:29:02

In any story there are antagonists. It could be man against man, man against himself, man against family, man against society etc. in OHOL it's man against nature or the environment first and foremost. You mostly want to see other survive since you know how hard it is. That's a good story and part of what draws me to the game.

There are a ton of games with wars and rivalries and fighting and sports.  In this game you really need to help each other and it give it a unique feeling satisfying other desires than fighting and "winning" you win together or not at all generally. I think some people are not comfortable with that.

It's from Feb. 2013 the date in the forum listing is the date of the most recent response I think.

It's not a new post from Jason someone necro'd the thread. Which is fine. But look at the date.

My mom was eve and she tells me "I saw cut wheat... and a mine" so together we look for the lost civilization having babies all the way. We see yet another mine, then some bodies with decayed clothing! There are now five of us of all ages making our way through the wilds and seeing more and more signs. We go south and the signs get weaker so we go north and come to a little zigzag path. We follow and find a rather large town. In the north I find a body and on it 5 knives! 5! It's clear why the town dies and perhaps who did it too.

Sadly, I died before we could get much further. But it was one of the best lives ever anyway.

I was born in a town and there were tomatos in the bakery and some guy insisting on making carnitas in there (WHY)

I don't think it makes sense to make icecream inside.

ooh oooh I can answer this one. Recently I was making the stew (as you do) and I had this ... shadow. Turned out she wanted to learn how to do it and was watching me closely and copying my steps. That happens with baking too, I think. They see you put a bowl of mashed whatever on a pie crust and copy. I'll say "wow thanks want to take over?" then run off to do something no one likes or understands. But in that case she was like "IDK how" so I showed herb the steps which is a little painful in-game. But it seems rude to be like RTFM!

I still have not seen locks used for anything but greifing on the regular server.

#1113 Re: Main Forum » Nerf Compost » 2019-04-01 00:40:14

This could be a case of expert players looking for the early difficulty curve again. So, the idea is to make the game harder. But what if there were other sources of difficulty. like exploring polar regions where even the best clothing is in effective to get some rare resource. Or danger of electrocution with some tech? This kind of thing is a nightmare for new players.

#1114 Re: Main Forum » Why do people... baffling behaviours » 2019-04-01 00:20:44

Why, since the update is every village littered with bowls of sugar and salsa? I swear making sugar bowls is borderline greifing...

I imagine if you make games people coming to you with “cool game ideas” is a lot like being an author and listening to everyone’s plot for the great american novel. (oddly no one ever comes to me with ideas for a killer proof when I tell them I do math...anyway) But, I like to hear about such ideas, and of course I have one myself.

It’s similar to OHOL in that it is a farming resource management type game. I didn’t start working on it when I had the idea about a year ago because I was convinced, given the success of pokémon go, someone would make it. It’s it just seemed so obvious. That hasn’t happened so either it is harder to make than I think (very likely) or it’s not that “obvious” but seeing another game “auteur” do rather well makes me think “you should try this”

So, I want to make a GPS farming and resources discovery game where you plant crops and build in real locations on the map. And you can’t just sit at home and play you have to go to each spot to plant harvest and gather.

Should I stop being lazy and try to make it? what sort of mood should it have? a lot of mobile games feel ... exploitative, like casinos or skiner boxes they are there to get you hooked and take your pocket change. can’t put my finger on what the difference is though.

We can make glass so why not binoculars. They would let you have a look at the view from the zoom mod, but only for a few moments. They probably should wear out. A very end tech way to get another look at surroundings plan towns better and not get as lost. They would take up space in a bag, so I don't think it'd be too powerful. Really fun for scouting and hunting.

#1119 Re: Main Forum » Nerf Compost » 2019-03-31 18:04:58

If the items decay people will make them "on demand" only. It also take a bit of the fun out of finding ruins. IMO.

#1121 Re: Main Forum » Why do people... baffling behaviours » 2019-03-31 17:54:17

Milkweed should be harvested right away so it isn't used for thread. The only other use for thread (other than lightbulbs) are arrows and we don't often need more of those. When I grow milkweed I harvest it as it matures and leave the ropes there. If I have a horse I bring back rope and leave it in the milk weed area.

It's tedious and one of my least favorite parts of the game. Yes "it can be done" but why? I would even like it if one could grow rope in a manner like potatoes where it just takes up less space and maybe uses more soil?

I tend to plant in the center of town where it can be seen so if it's being swiped people can comment on that. "secret milkweed gardens" are where the hoe for the stew farm vanishes to most of the time If you want to use up a hoe making a big garden that's great, just make an extra hoe. Stew production requires constant switching between growing and cooking and if the hoe wanders off it's a nightmeare.

One solution is to put a few skewers in your pack when farming soup. But, that's only sensible if you have a ton of packs since the stew farmer technically doesn't need one.

But, I just did. I was trying to give the knife back. Tried to set it at her feet. RIP. Someone killed me for being a "murderer" and I would not have minded but I was one of the few fertile women left so I felt bad for the town.

So, confirmed by me at least, accidental stabbings do happen.

#1124 Re: Main Forum » Nerf Compost » 2019-03-31 17:42:48

Just make it stackable. Tomatoes and peppers are also annoying for this reason. I rarely see a village with a "surplus food problem" there are other things to do like build, and work on complex tech and to do that you need a generation or two of surplus food.

Don't "nerf" anything make other animal meat useful. Make pigs useful. On what planet are tacos the only thing you can make from pork?

I hate the idea of something that was fun in the game becoming super hard all of a sudden.

#1125 Re: Main Forum » Why do people... baffling behaviours » 2019-03-31 06:58:53

This could be controversial... but why bring shrimp to the kitchen? I think it's to get plates and get them cut with a knife... maybe. But, after this update I really think we need a grill that functions like the flat rock but without the waiting. Perhaps you could just IDK hit an adobe oven with the chisel and mallet and BOOM grill.

You put kindling in and right away you can cook on it like a flat rock.
