@futurebird

Sorry, I couldn't even begin to think about taking on projects for someone else. All my time is already taken up with life and my own projects. But if you decide to go through with the game, it looks like GreatShawn would be willing to help.

@jinbaili83

Well, I'm not really looking to become a game designer, but I'm passionate enough about this game that I want to learn to work with this. I see limitless potential with this game, and I'd like to see what I could do with all that potential. Although maybe later on down the line, you never know.

@Greep

Thank you, this is the information I was looking for. I'll start now with learning C++, then probably python then java (if I want to learn more programming languages). Like I told jinbaili83, I'm not really looking at being a game designer (although it is intriguing). Looking back at the title, I can see how people would get that impression. I wasn't really looking to make a brand new game, I guess I should've specified. If I were to be one, I'd probably just go work for a game developing company lol.

For now, I'll be learning C++. Anyone want to bet how long it'll take me? tongue

I don't want to give too much away, (because this could ultimately go nowhere) but I'm really excited to make my own take on this game. Hopefully people will enjoy playing it.

Fat chance that Jason implements something like a watchtower.  He's just undluly arrogant enough about his game design in general to see flaws like that or care about them.  He'll probably think something pestering, annoying, and disturbing like fire grefing ends up 'interesting', and doesn't seem to realize interest has to be positive, not negative.

You usually strike me as the arrogant one, if I'm being frank. Also, something doesn't have to be positive to be interesting. You know, if you eat nothing but sweets, you start to lose the flavor and it becomes meaningless.

First off, thank you for taking the time to reply to my post. Secondly, is there not some stuff I would need to know ahead of time before I could even make use of the editor? I'm assuming the editor would let me change things like baskets breaking on use instead of over time and the duration of the murder cooldown? But I'm kind of genuinely curious about how it all works.

Learn C++!!

Oh, I've heard of that, but not sure what it is. Is that what this game runs off of?

futurebird wrote:

I do a bit of programming and app building and making a game like this is no joke. The multiplayer aspect of the game is particularly difficult and impressive as is the amount of data being managed in the worlds created. I don't think that making a new game of this scale would be a good first programming project. But modding a game could be more do-able.

Of course I wouldn't build a game like this from scratch lol. Even I can tell that would be a silly task for a novice to embark on. I was planning to use the (I think it's called source code) to build off of that. Like I said in my first sentence, modding was what I had originally planned to do. Also, I wish you luck with your gardening game smile

My first step was to figure out how to make mods like the stuff Mr.XIX, Whatever, and Pein make. I know there are quite a few people knowledgeable about this stuff in the community. There are the few I listed before, a few others I've seen but can't recall, and I feel like Tarr probably knows quite a bit as well.

At the very least, I'd like to learn where to start. If all else fails, at least I can start messing with this "Editor" and looking up C++ tongue

I was wanting to learn how to mod it, but I might just go the extra step to just make my own game (like 2HOL did). The problem is, I know absolutely nothing about programming. I've always been interested in learning, but I usually spend what free time I have actually playing games.

I just keep seeing everyone badgering Jason over the same stuff over and over again. And the argument "if you think your ideas are so great, why not make your own game" is ever prevalent, if not acknowledged. So, I figured I might very well be able to make a better version, and Jason doesn't seem to be bothered at the thought of me attempting. I think he might even encourage it.

So I'd need to learn programming and (if I was wanted to go full on with this) managing a server, but I don't know where to start. Could anyone, or even Jason himself, give me an a list of things I'd have to learn.

Ah, good old Joriom. I miss Joriom.

Are you sure you didn't misunderstand him? "spouting the n-word and spamming noises" is the issue, not the thing you're supposed to be fighting for. Is he not saying your values that cause you to deal with the issue are the "something to fight for"?

#107 Re: Main Forum » An observation » 2019-05-15 01:47:30

@JK Howling

I get you. It wasn't my intention to reprimand you, it was just the most recent examples in my mind. There are quite a few others I could've used. I appreciate you being a gent and not blowing it way out of proportion. Glad I took you as one of the more level headed forum users.

I get that it was honesty. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that. Just wanted to point out how something is said has a big affect on what is said.

jasonrohrer wrote:

Regarding property fences, are you experiencing a bunch of major problems with hoarding?

Not personally. Sometimes, yes. But most of the time, people are more that willing to share. If not, then they're at least willing to trade. I had a nice interaction where I was trading baskets of clay for a gentleman's rope.

I have had a few people just expect me to give them ownership, then camp me (or shoot me from over the fence) because they felt entitled to it.

#109 Re: Main Forum » An observation » 2019-05-15 00:54:30

It's easy to forget that there's another human being on the other side of the screen. You don't have to interact with people face to face. You can have criticism, but people forget how to speak.

"The second you add some bullshit microtransactions to buy more lives is the second I stop playing this game permanently. Keep tossing stupid ideas like this out to the public and you're going to lose people very, very quickly my dude"

VS

"I feel that adding microtransactions to the game would cause me to stop playing for good. I also fear that you may lose people very quickly if you continue to publicly voice ideas like this."

They both say the same thing, but they say it differently.

I was going to use other examples, but I think this one sums it up well enough. The past few messages from Tarr were definitely ripe pickings though tongue

I think it's probably just a product of the digital age. People have stopped talking with eachother, and instead talk to eachother. I don't want to name names (because I'm not looking for a fight) but one forum user in particular embodies this concept perfectly.

#110 Re: Main Forum » An observation » 2019-05-14 23:38:19

Yeah, the absolutely god awful amount of entitlement and ungratefulness definitely has a lot do with the times in general, I feel.

Also, I can't possibly read everything everyone from the community has to say, but I find most of the attacks and complaining comes from the same few people (one person in particular springs to mind). Might just be a case of the one/few awful smells overpowering the good.

Really? O.O

Wow, I had no idea. That's pretty nutty. Can't see why you'd use commas as a decimal point, they already have a purpose. That just muddies the water. Are you looking at 1,594 or 1.594. Using only commas, you'd need context to tell which one.

Cox wrote:

Hey, don't look down on me. I admit, you right on the metric system, but using commas for decimals is wack tongue

#112 Re: Main Forum » Food Efficiency Ranking » 2019-05-14 15:31:49

Is it just me, or are there commas where there should be decimal points?

Also, what exactly is column L on the second worksheet supposed to be?

Also, just as a thought, maybe do some rounding? I'm assuming those are decimal points, so maybe round the the hundredths place or something? Would make it look a lot cleaner.

This amused me to no end. I'm probably going to start referring to cold iron blooms as "balls of shame". So thank you for that.

As far as the post goes. It depends on whether I'm working or chilling. If I'm working, then I prefer to do so alone or with as few people as possible (if you want to help in the forge, fine; but do not touch the hammer or tongs, you can use the rock). Most people just wind up getting in my way, so if I see someone doing something, I'll do something else.

If I'm slacking off and chilling, then the more people, the better (provided bubble etiquette is followed). Communication is a pain, so I'd rather just work on stuff alone. If you know enough to help, then you know enough when joining in would or wouldn't cause trouble.

Good definition.

I personally feel it's more nuanced than that. Been thinking about making a post about it for a while now, still don't know if I will or not. Maybe if it gets more prevalent.

I was going to suggest this, but I figured I'd wait for the change to settle in. Get people used to not relying on them before you get the ability to remove them. "Boiling frogs" and all that.

People don't change. Once an asshole, always an asshole.

I disagree. I'm not someone who believes redemption is impossible, just unlikely.

I personally am never bothered by griefers much anymore. I would say that I never am, but I had a game last night where I made one of my sheep pens and someone planted carrots in there. Was kind of fuming. Not sure if it was stupidity or griefing, but it sure soured my mood a bit.

*side note* Sheep eating carrot rows is visually horrifying. I forgot how much it makes you feel sick lol. Just their gross head wobbling around, bleh.

#117 Re: Main Forum » How hard would it be to give this game WASD controls as standard? » 2019-05-13 18:19:42

@lychee

Yeah, that makes sense. Big server can host like 600 people but hardly ever has more than a couple hundred, so I figured maybe the system could handle it now that he's done all that optimizing. I was thinking about seeing if he's changed his mind, but I'll probably just leave it how it is.

#118 Re: Main Forum » How hard would it be to give this game WASD controls as standard? » 2019-05-13 01:31:11

@Greep
Nice, thanks for doing the work for me. Shame, it looks like he's going to just keep it as a mod. That's a damn right shame. Oh well.

@wondible
Oh yeah, search works now, huh? I think your link is bad though. I found it here https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=141 (not id=41)

I know literally next to nothing about what's going on under the hood, but would giving everyone WASD controls really put that much strain on the server load? I feel like he's already made a lot of great strides to really optimize it. Maybe the game is at a point where it could handle it?

He did say leaving at as mod "for now". He also said "maybe" when asked on forums. Maybe I submit a new github request and see if he's changed his mind?

#119 Re: Main Forum » How hard would it be to give this game WASD controls as standard? » 2019-05-12 22:22:31

I guess that makes sense. I suppose since not everyone uses hetuw, and not even all of those use WASD, it doesn't cause a problem. But it might if everyone was doing it?

I would hope that Jason could find a compromise and include it in the game. I'll have to look up the github request later.

Nope. It only says "report edit quote". Come to think of it, I think Jason made it impossible to delete posts a long time ago. Oh well, nothing I can do about that.

You would still be able to move with the mouse, maybe you'd even have to still click on things. Or maybe you could also have the ability to "click" with the keyboard. I'm just wondering how much of a challenge it would be for Jason to add this, or if he's said anything about specifically not adding it (like he has with zoom). I know the hetuw mod does something like this, so it's not impossible.

Basically, I've heard over and over about people asking for zoom to be a standard part of the game, but I've never heard anyone say anything about keyboard controls. Am I the only one that would be interested in this? Has anyone asked about this in the past?
