If we had any more than a small impact race restrictions would have been removed by now. I get its jason's baby but when something is bad its bad. The community has been saying this for almost two years to no consideration by jason. Not what i would call influence. Sure the community throws ideas out there jason find intriguing but more often then not hes either thought of the concept before or twists it in his own way it doesn't resemble the original idea much. Mechanically speaking i do think he takes people seriously. If there is a fault in the structure of things or in his script hes much more willing to hear you out. That said our overall voice as a community doesnt make much of a dent, especially when compared to other indie games.
Im all for the exploring the unknown. But almost all map diversity was removed when biome banding was added. It used to be a challenge and a skill to find a good spot to settle. Finding that perfect balance of resources and biome diversity was hard but when you did, it was a unique feeling. Like finding the promised land or the garden of eden. This.. does not exist anymore.
Finding a location is basically fail proof. There is no nuance. Its honestly awful. The map used to feel like this dynamic canvas of different biomes, ever swirling, and there was something unique around ever corner. Especially when biomes were truly random(snow next to jungle etc).
At any rate. The current map is infinite sure. But its basically like eating the same exact meal every day for eternity. Things are too organized and aligned. It feels artificial.
Please consider restricting the map. Despite the total size, banding puts a soft boundary on things. With the shuffle west there becomes a limit to reasonable travel east. So even with the current structure we are all stuck in a slender rectangle always moving west. It creates a sense of monotony. Moving, rebuilding, moving rebuilding. All the while resources from the east are shuffled west. So you see eve towns with lots of advanced tech in the first few generations. There is a loss to the natural tech progression.
Though i dont think the rift was perfect there was a far more dynamic element to progression. Resets were not just a matter of time or distance but by the communities effort to either maintain or destroy the world. The main issue with the rift was its size. It was too small, too easy to map in your head, and too easy to navigate as a whole. The size also greatly limited the lifespan of the rift. I think its possible to have all the elements you're looking for in your world, and more, in a limited map.
Areas would become so barren it would become so dangerous to enter them again, dead zones that would add an interesting dynamic to the map. They would likely house ancient ruins of once powerhouse cities that were lost to overconsumption. People would make hidden outposts and secret gardens. Giant monuments or caches of stolen good. Things we saw often in the rift, even with them only lasting a few days, but hardly anymore.
Size is the question. I think there is a middle ground between limitless and limited that has yet to be explored to its fullest. Good luck with the move. Think about it.
Im a little confused on what your chart means. Are those spawn points or where the homelands end up? If i had to guess it seems more like homelands. Considering that 3k shift happened so dramatically and then plateaus. That just screams community manipulation. Forcefully moving all fams then keeping them in the same location for 3 days. 3 days that happen to be the weekend...
I miss San Cal
Same to you.
Bots would be able to scan the entire render distance surrounding them for tools and resources. With the ability for super complex interactions to basically happen instantly food would never be an issue once a certain threshold was reached. Im not interested in programming an ai, ive got a lot on my plate atm already. That said I am aware of their potential.
You would be surprised forman ![]()
Bots would have the ability to scan the surrounding area for food, calculate the shortest path and the exact amount of time needed to eat to optimize food. A bot would also be able to interact with things on the server as fast as the server could register the actions. Obviously it would take a decent amount of scripting but simply calling them drones would be an understatement. They would be monsters no player could ever compete with. One would be unstoppable, now imagine a village full of them.
To be fair expecting this community to not make demands of jason or complain is basically like expecting jason to take everything we say seriously and have it influence his decisions.
Jasons a big boy and he's made it abundantly clear that we have little to no impact on his overall process or vision.
As much as its a cool idea. It would likely break the game and the use of bots would be promptly banned. As morty suggests its probably a better idea to create a variant of the game with bot support like you suggest. Players could rule an entire town or city and go to war with one another. Two people but hundreds of bots. Though i do see a system like this getting very boring after a while. Also there would likely be a lot of server weight with that many bots running, so you would need to rent a monster of a server. And running it 24/7 wouldnt be cheap.
Just used it and it worked fine. Maybe try using it within the discord app.
There are a handful of people who have worked on bots and ais for ohol in the past. I would ask around on discord and see if you can link up with them.
If you cant handle varying opinions and points of views you dont belong on these forums.
Jason has also said in the past he wont drop the game because hes still making decent money on it every month. Not because of the active player base. Jason makes money off of new players. Not vets who use mods. New players who grow frustrated and quit relatively quickly. Because the game as it stands, without mods, is awful. Yet we hold up this game and make it work by using mods. Without them we would see legitimate complaints and suggestions about the vanilla client. Jason would be forced to see the statistics and state of the game and attempt to adjust things. Its pretty simple. I understand being defensive over the mods and mod users. But their impact on the vanilla game isnt good or healthy.
Dodge didnt start discussing this specific topic, that was me. So if you want to talk shit bring it here. Dodge among others have just brought their own view point. Some agreeing and some disagreeing. This kind of discourse irons our ideas and discussions. If we didnt disagree or challenge each other we would never grow. If we all agreed or refused to acknowledge points of view different than our own the world would be in a very different place then it is today. Its ok to disagree and its ok to be upset about other peoples point of view. Instead of just getting upset and resorting to petty retorts perhaps try to convince them of your own point of view through thoughtful discussion. That is what these forums are all about arnt they?
That said. Someone whos only posted once. Their post having nothing to do with the game, besides mentioning it really. Attacks a user because they disagree with them. Hardly has the clout to say dodge, out of his thousands of posts, hasnt brought anything to this game or these forums. Its a bit hypocritical considering your position. Maybe dodge is right and its an alt account. Maybe you've brought a lot to the forums over the years and didnt want to stain your account with such a display. Then again maybe not.
*sucks pacifier*
Thanks for your response. Very inspired. As ive said before. Keeping a broken system alive through artificial means only hurts the game as a whole. As it makes the current system seem like it works and is fine as is. But thats not really the point. My main issue is people freaking out over a mod and acting like babies when it need to be fixed. Modders have lives and they arnt making any money, but as soon as something goes wrong with the mod everyone starts screaming like entitled children. The hetuw mod has almost died several times over the years. Mainly due to the toxic atmosphere surrounding this game. You should feel lucky there are people who care about this community to keep going, for free. Show them some respect, treat them like people. You're lucky they're still around.
The issue lies with people making the broken system work. As you say, "We do what we can with what we have because we must. We find a way forward and that way becomes the new meta, whether we like it or not."
There is no must and there is no like it or not. Thats just a lame excuse to hold up a broken system and refusing to take responsibility for your impact on it. Is it fun doing that? Are you forced or addicted in some way to keep doing so? You make it sound like there isnt a choice. There is. I dont see why people would work so hard to keep a broken system alive and thriving. Some might say its to spite jason, but all you're doing is making his broken system seem successful. When ultimately it should have failed years ago. The only reason i see for people torturing themselves by perpetuating this behavior is it gives them some type of gratification, some sense of importance they are missing, or have grown addicted to.
It is your choice, i cant stop you. But i can bring up its real impact on the game. The wagon lost its wheels long ago. I dont see why people feel the need to carry it further. New players figure out what this game is pretty quickly, otherwise we would have better retention rates. But it seems like we have a small population of people who are so invested in this game they've grown blind to what it is and their impact on it. Using artificial methods to make this game work is just as bad as jason using... artificial methods to make this game "work". Its time we reflect on that and figure out if that effort is really worth it.
Seriously who cares about dodges gender?
If we talked more about the game and less about micro analyzing each other we would save each other a lot of reading.
Well said JonySky. Both the quoted section and this most recent post. Couldnt agree more. Its sad to see this game become what it is today.
The biggest point i think you make is the story elements. Back in the day every life felt different. People interacted a lot and everything just felt more alive. You could walk away from a life that was disturbing where your entire family was slaughtered by another. There was organic strife that felt relatable and real, stuff that has happened time and time again across history. But now everything feels artificial. Leadership, kill mechanics, biome restrictions, etc all feel artificial and break the immersion that really was the only unique thing about this game.
Main thing that made me quit was how cliquey the game became. With the introduction of phex and the various discord groups governing the game behind the curtain all assemblance of anonymity or even in game communication became rare. Everyone just began talking in phex, because there was no character limit and you could communicate to any user using the mod on the server. This removed a lot of the challenges of the game and honestly made things super boring. Its also, my biggest issue, promoted a level of elitism where hetuw users wouldnt even talk to you in game, and not trust you with anything because you were an unknown. You would see fenced vaults all controlled by hetuw users and exclusive to them. It all just became really boring. The game used to be rich with in game banter, planning, discussions, and a sense of anonymity where the person on the other end very well could be someone you had played next to many times before but never knew. There was beauty in that. A beauty that has been lost. With the introduction of that along with all of jasons weird mechanics i was pretty much over it. It felt pointless playing the same life over and over again. Seeing your effort constantly going down the drain or making little to no difference. Everything just started feeling the same and if you were outside the inner circle you were treated like trash. Hetuw users will make the excuse they're making the game better, saving the server, making the game playable for others. This is so false. Jason judges this game by statistics and by spawning in and going "wow this family is rich everything is fine, i dont need to change anything, in fact it seems like oil is too easy to get, i better nerf that". Anyone remember what happened to rabbits because jason saw a town full of backpacks? We need to fail if we want things to get better. Something hetuw users refuse to acknowledge.
Thats probably my main issue with the mods. I do love them and i respect the devs a lot, but we rely on them too much and it serves as a crutch for the vanilla development of this game. We need to fail, there needs to be holes, problems, and deficits. Every time someone artificially backs up the status quo using a mod the fewer reasons jason has to adjust things. Vanilla users are suffering, there is a reason its hell for them. We dont make it easier by bolstering a broken system and making it seem like it works by using artificial means.
Next time i use cheat engine to break a game ill remind everyone they're just stupid and slow because i know how to enable an advantage. Most of you hetuw users couldn't even build an engine in a life time, let alone two engines vanilla. When your mod stops getting updated and you have to actually play the game like most new players we can talk about slow. But likely youll all just whine about how its unplayable because its not easy anymore.
Virus is deserved. Enjoy. Learn to actually play the game without depending on the good will of others. Maybe you'll actually understand what this game actually is. For noobs and "vets".
Honestly i respect that aureolin. But i do challenge you to try to accomplish those elements without it. Even with hetuw with phex disabled or just awbz. Key binding is fair game and zoom is a must tbh. But just cut phex and see what this game truly is without it. If you're brave it you'll work towards what it means to grind the metal of this game. The stuff new players deal with. Except they deal with it without zoom, no coord, internal chat, definite locations, item searches, and just a million things that actually enable you hetuw noobs. I wish they would have dropped you when you all shit on them like the self centered zoomer that you are.
Get your eve family past 10 gens during the rift times and we can talk about what vets need to learn sobako. You dont know what hard is and you clearly dont know what it means to be a vet in this game. Most vets sacrifice their gene score so you can take for granted all the luxuries this game can provide. If you were not an entitled brat speaking down to the generation ahead of you you might understand that.
Honestly phex is the worst thing to ever happen to this game. All it does is promote elitism, bullying, exclusion, and general cheese mechanics. If you want to play this game normally or without that feature you're at a disadvantage. Most phex user wont even talk to you unless you're using phex. Most town vaults are all run by phex users while any vanilla user is kept on the outside. It promotes a disgusting dynamic. I respect the developers who made it but neither have been show the respect they deserve from the community and their creation has been corrupted by it. Anonymity used to be a beautiful feature of this game, and it doesn't exist due to phex/hetuw. ily whatever, ily shadow, i know you put a lot of love and work into this feature, but seriously consider removing it.
So i know this is a little off topic. There are/is a lot of elements/diversity that we have lost since the rift and pre-rift days. Biggest ones that we have lost that i find detrimental to the overall experience are:
The loss of map diversity. This is the biggest loss in my opinion. First with the introduction of lay lines. Sure the pond well system was clunky, but the designated well system was a bit much. Its fine in comparison to what we have now, especially for aspiring eves to find their homeland. The main issue i see with it is now everything is on lay lines. Wells, iron, and oil, its all predictable. Exploring and finding rich areas is a thing of the past because everything is generally in the middle. Not scarce and not rich. Just generally even to reduce user error from inexperienced eves. Finding a golden spot used to be the highlight of an eve run. Finding that beautiful place that could last hundreds of generations. Now that doesnt exist and being an eve is basically just, find an ok spot in your family's band and rush iron. Over and over again. There isnt anything special to it. You wont find el dorado and you wont find some baren wasteland for the generations after you to struggle in. That diversity is lost. Its sad. With banding in conjunction with lay lines the map is just way too predictable so finding unique area doesnt exist. I played back when the map was completely random, impossible to read, you could have snow biomes on top of desert biomes and have sulfur pits and tarry spots tiles away from each other. This dynamic made finding a rich spot so much more interesting, and you could find some seriously amazing places on the map to settle. We have lost this.
Second is probably user dynamics. Or simply natural family dynamics. Before families completely relied on each other it was all for yourself when it came to family. People would steal, kill, war, raid, defend, and become refugees for their family. These are uncomfortable things but they are apart of life and were a rich part of the game experience. Experiences that dont exist anymore. They were not purely malicious, people were not doing them just because, for attention, or notoriety. They were doing it to survive, to come out on top, to overcome the strict and unforgiving environment they were presented with. Just like its easier to raid a dead town for resources and bring back what a generation of people could make in five lifetimes, a family could raid another and essentially do the same thing. This brought a rich dynamic to the game. I get its painful but it was powerful. I remember fleeing with my infant daughter as a family raided our town and killed everyone but the two of us. The feeling of resolve and a hunger for revenge was nothing like ive ever felt. A desire to reclaim my homeland someday and return my family to glory. To take back our legacy. We have lost this.
The total loss of player choice. Say for example you want to cook a rare food, dye clothes, grow roses, make rubber masks, make horse carts, or anything that is biome restricted. You simply cant. I mean eventually you could, if you invested lifetime after lifetime /dying so you could spawn as the correct race and hoard the necessary resources in some juxtaposed place where no one could tamper with it. Typically doing stuff like this takes multiple people or at least 3 generations as a solo player. That's hours of expectations put on our community to accomplish simple things that could easily be done in one lifetime. But i guess we cant have nice things. We have lost this.
I could go on but these are probably my biggest issues with the game currently. All things that existed during the rift. And all things that are vital for the total diversity of experiences in this game. The reason i think the rift should come back is because all of our current limitations and parameters basically serve the same purpose as that dreaded black wall we hated so much. Except that we knew what the black wall was, and there still was beauty inside, despite the adversity. Every arc was different and i remember every one distinctly. Something i havent felt since, even with all the new mechanics that were meant to promote just those elements. There is a golden zone of the rift. Its not 700 sum odd tiles, but its something. I do believe that. There is a golden zone where we have enough space and resources for things to get interesting, and i think the inevitable collapse and death of society is a unique aspect to the game. Is an arc killed by lack of resources, or by the people so fed up with the status quo that they destroy society intentionally. Its serious stuff to think about and stuff society deals with and questions all the time. I remember ending most lives thrown in some existential pondering. Either being inspired or pissed about what happened, then reflecting on is and realizing i was only feeling a fraction of what people have felt for thousands of years due to human nature, greed, self interest, desire, power, ambition, hubris, etc. It was always different. We have lost this.
