The update.... aye... oh my lord. The noise is going to drive me crazy. The sick sound, the whistling. Babies have nothing to do but make faces so guess what they do? Noise all day long. I tried to run to the bell town, to get out of my noisy little village (I threatened them with a knife, but didn't have the heart to kill the kids for being loud, so I left to escape the sounds) I ran to the bell thinking "oh this will be a better place"

But, one of them followed me. Making sound all the way!
She stopped when I asked nicely though, turns out she was my niece and was going to the bell town too! We would find a better place together!

Guess which town was the bell town?? oh my lord of all the places... GUESS. GUESS! It's the one that had the drug epidemic AND a famine! Of course it was noisy as ever there. What was I thinking? I said goodbye to my loud niece and gave her my hat and pants. Then I said goodbye to that noisy world.

After this hell-eve life I was born agin. And it seemed like everyone was being born in the same place. The little proto town was being overrun with babies.

I knew the only way to survive would be to run into the woods and become a trapper.

First it was too many babies, then none at all...  I brought back many rabbits but everyone was sad and wanted to die. An old guy was making a knife so I asked him to stab me. He died of old age just after.

then things got... dark.

Two very strange lives.

I was in that town after the crack epidemic you started. This explains a lot. LOL.

One of us left on a horse.
One of us gave up at 49.
We all made the camp tidy, everything stacked, the nursery ready. But there would be no children in this town.

The chaos and pressure vanished without the kids. I think many kids are newbies. They move things without knowing the trouble they cause, they gobble inefficiently and yet manage to starve. They stand with their big goofy heads in your way. Women who are having one kid after the next are not much better. They scramble frantically, I scramble frantically, trying to get something done without forgetting to feed the child.  If only we old men could have grown a child in the cabbage patch. I think someone suggested that once. A cabbage child spell to let all dude camps with resources save our civilization.

Oh we even had a little iron mine. And each and every tool, but no reason to make more.

The 5 guys in our town could hardly dent all the food we produced. Stews and pies of every flavor, the berry fields were perfectly tended and full.

(curse those who leave a single berry on the domestic bush, one of the first things I do in a town or camp is eat or pick and place in a bowl every bush with just one berry, single berry bushes give a false impression of abundance. the one exception are those gooseberry bushes near sheep pens, and of course wild bushes during the early game)

We even grew potatoes, because we could. Who could stop us? Only the cruel dice of mother nature that dealt our mother and my late sister one boy after the next.

In any case, it was a tidy camp, a near perfect camp, but it had no reason to exist without those agents of chaos, the children.

#1283 Re: Main Forum » I’m going to see how much KILLS I CAN GET! in 3 lifetimes. » 2019-03-15 12:31:00

I'd rather just be murdered now an then than stress over every baby being some kind of chaos agent. I was killed last night because a woman thought I was "greifing" when I removed baskets of pies from the bakery and put them near the berry bushes and other work areas. She seemed to kind of get that maybe I wasn't a greifer after she killed me, but I'd rather not do that to anyone than be suspicious all of the time.

Lineage is one of the really cool parts of the game. Very rare that I think about any game that I play after I play it. Not so with OHOL. I don't understand why it shows me the times I was a high-generation descendent though. That is kind of interesting, but what I really want to know is of my characters which one had the most generations following her.

Perhaps this is just a hard query to run?  but, to me it's always exciting when the family tree keeps going for many generations after I played. I like to try to understand what happened to the town from the last words.

Also, a possible suggestion: what if we could append links to screenshots and very short comments to a family tree that others in the line could see. I could link to the post I made here about the "little bakery" and others might just post a screen shot of something memorable. Make it just a little multi-media.

Maybe use the forum ID system to cut down on the potential for moderation issues.

OK here is a funny photo of an old person showing off how many letters they can use nZIpgtI.jpg

If you are going to do this at least post some screens so we can have the bitter sweet knowledge that you destroyed a town we built.

Also, I think it's not really a challenge if you look for a vulnerable target, you are just trying to make it easy. Take on the first 3 spawns you get whatever they are.

I mean, yeah, but those aren't the only factors. You have to get your kids and family motivated to make food and keep the village organized. If one of them is super productive but wants to make potatoes you can't MAKE that person not plant them. Food isn't all that dire in the game if most players simply produce more food than they eat. That makes room for a few to do things like make paper and cars if you are lucky. It's easy to make enough food to feed a dozen people and if that's your jam, (its mine, I like to feed the masses) then go for it.

It's obvious that berries, mutton pies and later milk are the best mass foods. End of story. But, if someone is bored with those it's better if they make SOMETHING.

I wish there were some stats for our impact when playing as a guy.

#1290 Re: Main Forum » An apology and a gloat » 2019-03-15 04:41:15

I'm amazed you haven't killed anyone. Even I had to do the murder once. (carrot seed greifer in a starving eve camp, not sorry)

Having living grad-kids is inversely correlated with killing I think. Could it be that just having more people matters that much? Even greifers have productive kids.

Please don't abuse "math" like this. Just because you put math on something doesn't automatically make it more valid. And I say this as a mathematician.

#1294 Re: Main Forum » Tacos and Burritos » 2019-03-14 22:25:16

How hard would it be to make a server where you can't make a gooseberry in to a seed? Take that away and things get interesting. Wild berries only. Better learn to make burritos.

I look forward to getting born into an Eve camp positioned at the meeting point between a massive swamp and equally enormous badlands for i will know that I have found the promised land.  Hopefully, the camp's small green space will be surrounded by an ample supply of wild pigs.    We will call them "walking tacos" for they are Nasoj's gift to our people.  Food that moves.  Food that fights back.  Food that kills those too weak to understand the joys of taco-making.

There are no gooseberry bushes in Taco Town  because there are no sheep.  Never sheep - they are the anti-pig - Unclean and rejected by our wise traditions.  Our children eat only popcorn, for corn is the one true food, mother of tacos, creator of pigs and geese and cow.  From corn comes life and milk and masa.  Dirt must not be wasted on any inferior crops.  Our fields are rich with corn and the fields of dry corn keep our children safe from the wolves and bears that visit us regularly.

The weak perish in Taco Town.  The strong wear wolf hats and eat a lot of tacos.

Looking forward to seeing you in the promised land.

Problem is, if you have a fire, people with babies will plop them down there. If you are nursing age mother they will just leave them there for you to feed!

I don't think it was the case with your guy, but this could just be having issues with the controls. I once started spazing like that while starving and almost got stabbed because I couldn't respond. My issue is I click on my "open applications" bar and some app starts opening and the game slows to 6 FPS and it's awful. Don't know how to prevent this.

I feel about the same about murder, now and then a little mayhem is fun, but if it just turns in to some kind of strange PVP it's not the game I wanted.

I assume the entry fee for joining Taco Town would be a baby piglet.

For burritos, the bare minimum equipment is one long shaft, a piece of kindling, two flat rocks, a round stone, access to water, a plate and two bowls.   In practice, it works better if you have five flat stones - four to place out dough and one to go on the hot coals.  Extra kindling for when you forget to cook the beans before you put on the hot rock.  As many bowls as you can find - for mass production, both beans and wheat go into bowls (and so does pork/corn masa), so if you want to prep all ingredients to mass-produce a bunch of burrito plates really fast, it requires a ton of bowls.  Five bowls is okay, ten bowls is better, fifteen bowls would be great.   For example, four bowls of cooked beans, six bowls of flour, and at least one extra bowl for water would let you make four plates of burritos quickly.

You really only need one straight shaft, but you might want an extra, in case someone walks off with your stick or lights it on fire.  A few extra plates are also good, but not as vital as extra bowls.

For tacos, the major difference is the slack lime to make the limed corn.   Again you need a lot of bowls, but for tacos, you also need limestone and access to a forge.   I would suggest setting up a pottery kiln in a suitable location.  Ideally not far from clay deposits, water, and if there happens to be badlands closeby, that is a great bonus.  Fire up a bunch of bowls and some plates.  Then make an extra bellows and melt limestone using some of the new bowls.    The village will benefit from the pottery and you will be set to make some fresh tacos.   The taco station can even get set-up close to the pottery kiln so the flat rocks can be re-used later for smithing, if necessary.    Being near a swamp means you will also be close to wild pork.   A corn farm would provide all the corn you nedd for tacos.  Add beans and wheat, if you want to do burritos.

I shall build Taco Town some day. Look for the signs. Not real signs, obviously who has time to make a real sign LOL. Anyway, look for the Taco Outpost it is coming.

but the small bakery you describe might be a good one only if you are working alone, but in OHOL you shouldn't count on that, people want either help or just stand around

I think people "help" because they only know a few of the baking steps. When that happens I say "go get a bucket of water" or "go get flour" if they don't go then I do it. Most of the time you can get a bakery running just by bringing kindling and lighting the fire. I don't know why no one wants to do that (maybe they don't know how?) but I have see so many bakeries where there are just stacks of uncooked pies and people keep making more and more and only bake if you step in.

If there are two baskets of uncooked pies I'll get started lighting the fire unless the town has too much food, then I wait for 4 baskets. At an eve camp I'll start it up at one basket. Uncooked pie are clutter, get them out of the bakery. Get the cooked ones out too.

This plus frag's vaccine idea (I'm thinking a vaccine/cure that would either cure a person or make them immune)  could make for interesting play. Your best smith is now slow and can't work because of the skeeters, time to make a cure so they can get back to work!
