#126 Main Forum » Discouraging Domestic Berries » 2020-01-03 22:31:07

In the last few towns I've played in, in my opinion, there were way too many domesticated berry bushes, 6+ clusters of 9 bushes.  More than what I consider average and still too much.  I personally find it easier to run a bit out to wild bushes and fill bowls (especially if I have a cart and backpack full of carrots at my disposal) I also think it ultimately saves time over the whole compost cycle.

Again, in my opinion, the more domestic bushes = the quicker death of the town due to water shortages.  What can we do to evolve the meta within the greater player base?

Didn't you know that the advanced tech is already there?

You just have to stumble upon the undocumented recipes...
Find the ingredients in hidden biomes designated in colors not displayable by modern graphics cards...
That are locked away by non-playable races... (elves and fairies mostly) who refuse to speak your language...
And once you get everything you need, then you just have to wait multiple lifetimes for the crafting sequence to complete...

We already have a Nosaj.  That's as close to a baby sacrificing altar as we're likely to get.

If you want currency, take a page out of Hitchhikers Guide and use leaves and then burn down the Forrest.

It's preparation alone is insane.
As a prerequisite, you need to have sheep, medipads and knife.
So you have to make a fence post, then sacrifice 8 milkweed for a lasso and a sheepskin for a saddle that will be irremiedably lost. Find and capture a horse, tame it then intentionnaly kill it on a snake, then hit it with a knife and finally a bowl.
If someone gets bitten by a snake, it has to be lucky to be close enough to the city, to find someone that has a knife, that there are medipads and a fire on, and that someone knows what to do. By the time all that happens, the person is dead, not talking about the fact that most of the time you're too far from city.

Since the whole process involves a knife anyway, much easier to go and actually kill all the snakes around the city, at least we can get nice boots out of them, and the other snakes are too far from city to be healed anyway.

I second this.  I don't know if I've ever seen antivenom used in a real life situation.  Maybe once in a "mock" scenario?

Mine would be a monolith with an elder sign inscribed on it.  When touched, everyone in 100 squares would automatically curse the last person I cursed.

#132 Re: Main Forum » Since Jason says that every town should have a griefer I became one » 2019-12-30 17:42:42

There definitely has been an increase in griefer incidents in the last three days.  Hopefully that just means that there has been too much holiday brake and the bored griefer kiddies will be back in school on Thursday.  Jason, please take note and plan for a content update to hit after next Christmas to keep everyone preoccupied till they are safely back in school.

Combat is a hot mess.  To many convoluted systems and edge rules that only benefit the griefer.  Posse mechanics don't help at all.  Biome locks just allows griefers to hide.  The delay in the initial kill only works to their favor.  Don't even know if peace/war helps any, as I never see war used anymore.

When 99% of suggestions for new content are ignored out of hand, people quit posting suggestions.

When 99% of complaints about existing / new systems are dismissed out of hand, people quit trying to point out problems.

What does that leave us?  People bragging about the abuse they heap on their fellow players? People writing fanfic about their latest life? Posts from Jason trumpeting how right he is? Niche stuff for the most part that doesn't engage 99% of the player base.

I just want to see a "Lost and Found" table.  Any clothes lying around on the ground in an "x" radius get teleported to this table.

Well, we got wine which seems to be a big hit with those whom make it.  So I'm expecting beer and microbreweries next.  And maybe some moonshine and a copper still for those rustic Eve players.  Maybe even some vodka with those leftover potatoes.

I've never understood the fascination with running to the bell tower.  A common complaint is that mature cities are boring.  And yet, any city that has a working bell tower has to be rather mature in the grand scheme of things.  In my last life, my mother had been running for two lifetimes to cover the 7K+ distance and I died to wild animal trying to keep up.  So enlighten me all you migrants, why do you run for the tower?

Jason,

Why not start with something less dramatic?  How about: The murder weapon breaks in the hands of the killer.  That would slow down repeat murders, or require somebody to carry multiple knives in a backpack or multiple bows in a horse cart.  Both pretty obvious clues the mad lad is up to no good.

Or...

Jason could add Bear Traps.  Put a trap in front of the den, and at least the first bear woken from hibernation is toast.

#145 Re: Main Forum » New pine meta » 2019-11-27 13:44:34

I have to say the pine update was long overdue and that I'm enjoying it greatly.  I find myself looking around town wondering what to do and then I'm like "Screw it, I'm just gonna make pine panels again."  I then trust others will use them wisely.

I really like how you need rope to make the panels, but that it doesn't exhaust the rope.  I think it really works great for a recipe that needs to be repeated a lot and this mechanic should be used in more constructions going forward.

#146 Re: Main Forum » New pine meta » 2019-11-25 13:20:13

Can pine walls hold shelving?  I was dreaming last night of normally vertical pine walls being purposely oriented east/west with shelves.  Then dreaming that you could place and take items from either side of the wall.  It would make for a nice loom room next to a sheep pen and for a kitchen on the opposite side of the pen.

I'm sure you will all poke holes in my fever dream, but I could hope that it would work.

Matthew 6: 1-4 (New International Version)
Giving to the Needy

1“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

2“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Hi,

I bought the game yesterday and really enjoy the idea and concept of the game. However, it is really hard for new players to settle in.

Don't get me wrong: I have no problems reading a bit in the forum, in the wiki and so on. And I did so before starting the game. But this teaches you just the basics. The problem is: People in the game do nothing to help you. If you ask how you can help, you are just insulted as noob. I know, the game is on steam sales and now many new players rush the game. But while I'm new to this game, I'm not stupid. If somebody just explain me what to do, I can figure out the rest myself. And it often takes only a minute to teach new players. If people tell me: "plant carrots!", then I can open the techtree and figure out how to do that. But even this single sentence is often too much. In fact, people rather spend minutes to blame people for being noob, instead of helping.

Blaming somebody for beeing new is stupid anyways. If it is necessary to watch hours of lets play videos before starting the game, you can say that in a  kind way.

But my understanding of the game, based on its mechanics, is that old people are responsible for teaching the new ones. Thats's the reason for old people to be able to write long chat messages. But nobody seem to take care of new players.

It is also a very stupid strategy to do so: if nobody tells new players what to do, they start doing something therself, like taking some tools, standing in the smith, using a bow to hunt animals and accidentally kill other people. Actually, I guess most "griending" is done by new players who just don't know what to do. So spending a few minutes for new players might be a smart strategy to avoid griending.

The problem is also, that people not only expect from you to understand the rules of the game, but also to know the implicit rules. Things that are not part of the game mechanics, but which evolved over time by the community. These things are not written in tutorials. You might learn them when watching lets play videos on youtube. I never watched lets play videos. I find it stupid to watch hours of videos to be "allowed" to play a game. And I find it sad, because the game could be much more fun for everyone, if we would communicate more.

Kaidu,

I would recommend acting as a prep cook.  In that, don't look for a job that nobody is doing.  But rather, look for somebody already doing a task, and then find a way to aid them.  If they are cooking or smithing, there is always a demand for sticks to be brought and made into kindling.  Or if somebody is prepping pies, you could focus on running bowls of wheat to that part of town, or even going so far as grinding it into dry flour.  Bowls of berries + carrot are needed for so many jobs, your job could just be making as many of them as possible.  Or simply running around town collecting discarded plates and bowls and returning them to needed areas.

If you show that you can be useful, you are more likely to be treated as an apprentice.
