I agree with Thaulos, 200 by 200 seems a bit extreme. I feel like it's too easy to get caught in the crossfire.

Also, curse points going down at a rate of one per week seems a bit extreme. If I get born at the same time as one other person and I decide to be a jerk to them, I can curse them twice in one life (since it takes 30 minutes for curse tokens to regenerate). If I cooperate with one other person (or have a second account) we can set their curse score from 0 to 4 in half an hour, basically exiling them to Donkey Town for a week whenever I'm playing.

I've always been a proponent for more strict and more efficient cursing, but this seems a bit too much.

IMO the best solution would be to only look at currently online people when counting someone's curse score.

Thaulos wrote:

Only one would need to be online inside the rift mind you.

I was under the impression that the system would count online people currently playing only. So if there's five people currently playing that have you cursed, your exile radius is 500, even though you might be cursed by 20 people in total from other offline people.

If it doesn't count online people only and counts all people that cursed you, then I don't think it's a good system. And reading Jason's post again, that's clearly how it's described. So no, I don't think that's a good solution.

#179 Re: Main Forum » Why is no one talking about... » 2019-09-25 19:37:18

So that's what those are! I had no idea they were the Arc names, I figured it was some code of error code that was mistakenly showing up.

You can see the name (although I don't think it's clear enough that that's the name) when the Arc age notification pops up in the top left.

I would like to remind everyone on how exploitable that kind of system is. We need a certain amount of minimum curses to avoid griefers being able to band together and send people to donkey town.

@Twisted you specially should be very aware of how this kind of thing can be abused. What if all griefers in discord cursed you during a live stream? You would be pretty much put on donkey town for the rest of the week.

Very good point, didn't think of that. But then again, A) they'd have to be playing at the same time, and B) if they are serial griefers they'd probably be in DT themselves and their curses wouldn't do much. But it is something to keep in mind.

#181 Re: Main Forum » A whoops on the curse radius » 2019-09-25 17:27:55

If you do the max radius experiment people will probably abuse it to finally play outside the rift again.

jasonrohrer wrote:

The diagonal rift radius is 1001.  Let's call it 1000.  So the base radius should be 100, multiplied by your total number of active curses against you.  So if one person has cursed you, you will be born 100+ away from them if they are playing.  If 5 people have cursed you, you will be born 500+ away from them, if any of them are playing.  And if 10 people have cursed you, you will be born in d-town if any of those people are playing.

I actually really like the sound of this. It sounds like a very simple and effective solution, although I might be missing something.

What if you are an Eve and your first kid is a griefer, he/she kills all her siblings before they can grow up and defend themselves and you can only watch.
But i like the idea that Eves cant kill, i think most of the time the Eve should be fine, and griefing Eves are a much bigger problem.

Honestly I think if that happens your town is already dead, even if you manage to stop the griefer kid. You have to invest your resources into crafting a second weapon (assuming the kid uses the first bow and arrow) and you also lose at least two kids minimum (the victim and the griefer). It's hard to come back from that.

I agree with this, honestly it makes so much sense. An Eve should start a new family, she should never have the need to kill anyone.

#186 Re: Main Forum » Reports of the Arc » 2019-09-19 19:47:23

But if you have an Eve window that's not at the beginning of the Arc, then they're not real Eves. They don't spawn in the wilderness and start a civilization from scratch, they will move into an existing city, either a currently existing one or one that died out. That feels very wrong to me - Eves should mean a start of a new civilization.

#187 Re: Main Forum » Reports of the Arc » 2019-09-19 18:48:11

I was playing when the Apocalypse triggered. We had just finished building a diesel engine for our water supply. We had a town with plenty of resources and a lot of food and we were far from struggling. It shouldn't have ended just because there was only one mother in the world - if the arc went on for just a minute or two longer the number of mothers probably would have gone up.

I don't know how often the server checks for TooManyBBs end condition, but maybe it should only trigger the Apocalypse if the condition is triggered X times in a row?

Counting players instead of mothers also makes sense - mothers are not the only ones who take care of kids.

#189 Re: Main Forum » first and last post » 2019-09-17 21:14:57

I don't have any experience with Eves spawning outside the windows and I can't confirm that it's happening, but being cursed during the Eve window means you have perma-Eve mode. If a player has enough curses to skip several mothers, they should not be rewarded with an Eve spawn inside the rift. That means they can roam the map and cause ruckus, and when they are killed they immediately spawn as a fully functioning adult ready to do the same thing all over again.

Since the Eve window is eight hours that's eight hours of troublemaking with no consequences.

#190 Re: Main Forum » So Many Bone Piles » 2019-09-17 20:16:49

The way I understand it, the bones-losing-properties-in-cart bug was unfixable without major changes to the way the tile system works. Currently tiles can only hold enough information to save the data of one dead person, and changing that would be a massive undertaking that would probably take months.

So there's three choices:
A) Drop everything and spend the next few weeks revamping the system just to fix the bug and make dead bones more consistent (everyone would hate spending the next few weeks just on this).
B) Make bone baskets non-containable, making it a bit more awkward to transfer a mass amount of bones but eliminating the bug completely.
C) Leave it as it is, allowing bones to lose their information and be a bit buggy.

Out of these I think only B and C are reasonable, and since OHOL is supposed to place some importance to your family, ancestors and offsprings included, B makes more sense than C.

That's just my understanding of it, I'm not a programmer or a designer so don't quote me on this.

#192 Re: Main Forum » The curse system needs attention ASAP » 2019-09-15 09:32:16

Cursed players spawning as an Eve inside the rift needs to be fixed ASAP.

I also think that the 48 hour area ban for cursed players is way too short. Unless you play the game literally every day cursing kind of feels a bit pointless. It should be at least double that IMO.

I just want to point out, if you see these items and you are yumming you SHOULD definitely eat them. Why? Well, someone is going to eat them sooner or later, and since they're already there it's better if they're used for a yum chain - at least that way they give more value.

#195 Re: Main Forum » The arc ended again. » 2019-09-12 18:12:38

I'm still holding out hope that the whole Arc/Rift concept will be scrapped. We've had a month and a half of fixes and tweaks and despite all that I still think the pre-Arc era was a lot more enjoyable. It's just so samey these days.

I'm always reminded of Jason's GDC talk where he says that creating Unique Situation Generators is the way to go, and I find it a bit sad that the Rift (almost definitely unintentionally) decreased life variety by so much.

#196 Re: Main Forum » Last Arc family population graphs » 2019-09-06 19:38:21

I find it very interesting that this Arc gave us two of the top five longest family lines ever, as well as the longest non-coordinated line in the Nice family, dethroning the Sages from nine months ago.

#197 Main Forum » Hungry Work is one of the best things ever added to the game » 2019-09-04 08:36:46

Twisted
Replies: 25

Hungry work is great. It does a great job of stopping a lone griefer from cutting all the trees on their own, but still makes it possible to easily chop trees if you cooperate and build up your town.

It works great with other game mechanics. Chopping down a tree costs ten pips, and you need to have at least five pips remaining after the chop as a buffer. This puts old people at a disadvantage as their hunger bar is smaller... but that disadvantage is greatly reduced if you have a high gene score! These two mechanics go together really well, but they're just a small part of what makes Hungry Work so great.

The real synergy is with the YUM chain mechanic.

In real life you need a balanced diet to stay healthy and strong, and sometimes you have a craving for a specific food. In OHOL all foods have the same exact function - to fill up your hunger bar. There is no reason to make different foods. You just find the most efficient food that gives you the most pips for the least effort, and you eat that. To combat this problem, we were given the YUM mechanic. But there is still a big problem - you don't need to eat that often. In fact, if you keep a yum chain going from birth to death, you only need to eat ~17 times. This means that each town only makes about 20 of the best food items, and the other ones are mostly ignored. There's no reason to fish or make salsa when there's no time to eat those foods. There are currently 49 food items in the game, and most of them are a waste of time. New foods will inevitably be added, and they will either be a waste or time, or they'll make some of the current meta foods to be a waste of time.

But with Hungry Work, they are not a waste of time. Hungry Work depletes both your food bar and your YUM bar. It makes it so you have to eat more than ~17 times per life. With Hungry Work, food is more valuable than before, and even better, yumming is more valuable than before. If we had more actions that were hungry work, having a variety of foods would become so much better. Not everything has to cost 10 food - smithing an item could cost 1, while slaughtering a sheep could cost 5. Just little things to encourage more food variety. To me, this makes sense - as the village grows, they have more food, and they can do things more easily.

#199 Re: Main Forum » born outside rift in low pop server » 2019-08-29 14:03:17

I could be mistaken but I was under the impression that the rift only appears when there's at least 15 people playing on that server. Since there's no rift there's no families inside the rift, so the message tells yo that there's 0 rift families alive.

#200 Re: Main Forum » Elders? » 2019-08-29 14:00:44

Yes, you do get a new 'paper' that you can place on another fence. It's a bit unintuitive just looking at the recipes, but once you actually do it ingame and see it in action it's fairly simple to do it again. The one thing to keep in mind is that the elder has to be the second person to sign the paper.
