idk if link will work you can just copy paste
so I was in an unnamed village and I was shepherd then all of a sudden I notice all sheep are shorn
so I ask hey who sheared all sheep
one guy said me (I think it was aaban)
I said well why you do that
he spouted off reasons why you should only feed adult sheep and said things like you get twice poop and wool and I was saying but you get no meat and you dont get twice the stuff you should only feed babies and kill all shorn adults but he wouldn't listen
he then started getting really mad and cussing me and my relative (a little girl I couldn't find her on lineage, maybe you can)
then he said fine do it your way and left so we did
I was getting berries and carrot bowls and I see the little girl bloody saying he stabbed me, then died
he could only mean aaban as no one else had knife, he took from sheep pen
so I warn everyone of murderer and make a knife, ready to fight, but I couldn't find him, also horse was missing so I guessed he took it and ran
what really makes me mad here is how he actually thought he was right but he is wrong right? shouldn't you always only feed baby sheep so you get meat? have I been doing it wrong this entire time? I hope he was wrong not me but was he right? besides the murder and horse stealing I mean
Edit: update I just noticed that my son Diva (said david like divad) just got murdered I hope theres not another murderer...

You are generally right. Though it only wastes a bowl of berries and one carrot. Mostly it's just not considerate since anyone who needs wool must feed the sheep multiple times to get it back to normal.

You do not get double poop from adults. You used to get NO poop from adults. It just regrew wool. Now you get wool and poop if you feed adult. If you feed baby you get a new adult sheep - so wool, poop, and meat.
If you have space for more sheep, feeding babies is better. If you have no space and plenty of meat, feeding adults will reduce the shepherd's workload, because he can skip slaughtering step. But feeding adults is NOT superior in terms of raw resource production.

also
make yourself a backpack, or secure one or at least an apron
& grab the knife lying around the sheep pen or the bakery
better you've got it than some bored griefer or roleplayer
they don't really need any actual reason to stab, they just pretend to
i've been to so many towns, where i didn't grab the knife & it always ended in bloodshed
where i had the knife, the murder ratio was at least reduced, often to zero
but do it always first after the backpack, therefore backpacks & rabbits & snares are very important

If you end up with more than one knife melt it down. If you aren't using the knife or old and have no one to give it to? Melt it. As long as the sheep are getting killed the bread sliced etc. there isn't any need to leave it floating about.

I did my first knife dis-assembly today, and quite honeslty the fact that everyone on the forum refers to it as "melting down" the knife made me think it would be quite a bit harder than it actually is.
knife + smithing hammer = blade + short shaft
easy peasy, lemon squeazy, as my kids like to say.
The early gen smith we had was really into replicating tools. We had two axes, two shovels, and two hoes. I started pestering him for shears for the sheep as soon as I was old enough. But did he make shears? NOOOOOO. He made five knives. FIVE!!!
I got three of them in my bag, figured out how to take them apart, and proceeded to make a set of shears and a bow saw. All without any use of the forge whatsoever.
Which is a bonus, I have an odd fire phobia, which apparently extends to smithing involving the firing forge but not to baking. Don't judge.
Let's just call this breaking knives, ok? No melting is needed and the term can confuse the noobs and the crusty oldtimers alike.
P.S. Thanks for giving me a thread to brag about my knife breaking adventures in.

Remember to put the blade in a bowl so it isn't easy to put back together!

You can either arm everybody, od disarm everybody. Your approach, the second one, is decreasing the chance for murders. But if any happens, it will be massive!
Suggestions: more basic tools, hugs, more violence, day/night, life tokens, yum 2.0

sorry but no
only one knife in a settlement is dangerous
everybody with a backpack, who proved themselves useful should have a knife, that's the safest a town can get
if you have in town only one knife this can mean that a griefer gets hands on it & then blood will be spilled
one knife might be viable in a total beginner settlement with little iron, but such a settment is better off without any knife, until backpacks are there & sheep are kept at first only for wool
but if you have already a sheep pen, enough people to run a wheat farm for compost & pies
fair amount of furs for clothes & backpacks, then you will need more than one knife & you should have about three
if the number of people is dwindling in a town, then it's equal anyways if there is only one knife or three
btw i've been to towns flooded with knives, didn't have more bloodshed than anywhere else
not knives alone but people murder & grief

nope again, sorry
there is still bow & arrow
a town is not safer without knives but with responsible ways to deal with them
if you have a knife & are going to die soon, pass it on to someone who's working, farming, baking, cleaning sheep pen, caring corpses away, setting up a hospital, forging, firing pottery, doing useful stuff
those are the most reliable players
if you see a knife lying around & you have a backpack, then take it, keep it safe, use it for good
just destroying knives is not the best option
then again
i think instead to melt two knives you should rather make shears with them

There is no bow & arrow when griefer strikes, as those are the things griefers hide before murders. With knifes in backpack you can still be productive and this is the only way to quick deal with griefers.

the first time i've got murdered was by bow & arrow, i've been murdered with bow & arrow by my own son i've wasted my time with nurturing him,
& all those countless guards with bow & arrow bored guarding & going on a killing spree
killers don't need a knife, just an intention or pretext to kill, bow & arrow is as good to kill as knife is
& i still don't propose killing in revenge or as a measure to "deal with griefers"
i've been also to countless towns where bystanders or some kid eating pies or some elder got "dealt with" just because
"killing a griefer" is probably quite a genius griefer idea to kill without people getting suspicious
cause not everybody is as observant as i am
prevention is the best option,
reduce knives in town if there are actually too many, means more than about 3,
put bow & arrows visible to all middle in town center, prepare hospital
make backpacks, give knives to responsibly working folks, so they learn to hand down their knives to the next generation of responsibly working folks
this makes the town safe, proven again & again
i would prefer more prevention options but well, it is only as Jason gives it

No strange you've keep being killed with bow & arrow, if you keep knive numbers so low

bow and arrow is generally better to kill
especially that you are a healer with the only knife and needle in pack
i learned it if i even want to heal people i hand out a knife for someone else and a hidden pad bowl so we are covered
reverse case i had that cocky "doctor" who just stole my apron and acted all holy, guess who saved him when he got shot?
no one cause he had the only knife and needle
the main thing what griefers don't know: what happened before their birth
so hide the bow yourself and take the arrow
i even go to twins, say hi, and tell them i kill them if they fuck around
taunting them generally brings out their bad self right away and then we are ready for them
