HOW TO: make paths for other families to find your village.

I think one of the easiest ways we can connect right now might be by cut down pine trees. Cut pines are a great path towards civilization, and I can usually follow them well. If we cut west we will give greater chance for future eves and her kids to find us. If we cut east we allow for older settlements to find us.

What you wil need: Two axes. I made both mine.

Step one. Travel south west from your village and cut down 2 or 3 pine trees every time you see them. Cut for about 300 or 400 tiles.

Step two. Go north of your ending point until the home marker needle is facing directly east, and proceed to cut 2 or 3 pine trees at a time until you make it home.

Step three. Cut 2 or 3 trees while you travel northwest for 300 or 400 tiles.

You made need 3 axes, but I did it fairly well with 2.

I confirm!
Cut trees are the easiest to spot human footprint and the easiest to mass-produce.
They have helped me a lot to navigate.

Re: HOW TO: make paths for other families to find your village.

This might be a rather reliable method.

I think the pattern you describe of tree cutting was used by ShyDies back when she did the first nosaj apocalypse to find her way back to nosaj stones (except it wasn't all pines.. it was on a low pop server).  Different purpose, but that suggests more evidence that such can work.

I suspect I've understated things above.

The aesthetic of lumberjacks hacking up trees, because they were almost as bad at finding alien connection as SETI, I can't say I like.  I'd believe that lumberjacks have cut trees for purposes of sight.  But over long distances?  Oh... maybe they have to prevent or mitigate forest fires.

You can also do this to mark the tarry spot as the arctic specialists.

Re: HOW TO: make paths for other families to find your village.

you can technically move items into a line, which won't be transported if it's far from any city, so you got a good chance of leaving up stuff

there are some low tech materials that are hard to move or grief, and look man-made but require no tool slots.

soon we get pine panels and roads, not sure how waystoens will work, but until then:
home marker
adobe half wall (full wall decays)
stone roads
stakes with mallet

all you need is a sharp stone and a bit of time

to make it simple but effective, go north and south and put a signal there reverse side of the spring, since you got 160 from well, you need to go further, at 240 you can put one stake opposite side of it then use mallet to form an arrow

obj_1533.png
this above spring means that town perimeters south

obj_1534.png
arrow north

obj_1532.png
right

obj_1531.png
left

now you do this +- 400 abow and below town then people can find it while going east or west

other would be to put an adobe to signal lets say 400, and 80 for each stone so you could go  from there

obj_1531.png

problem is that you got 8 springs around one town then a space between each straight direction, then 2, 3, 4 etc so you cannot point to town from each

but east-west we got extended by max 3k, the mainline lower than 360 so making 12 springs like this above and below covers quite a lot

Seems good, but wouldn't swapping your North and south make more sense so it's consistent that the side with 3 is always pointing toward town? That's the way you have it for east/west, and tapped out wells do it that way too.

Re: HOW TO: make paths for other families to find your village.

no is same as the springs have stakes on backside pointing reverse to towns, not all of them tho
